I have encountered several recommendations for hurricane relief organizations. For what it’s worth, here they are.

According to a recent article in the Daily Caller, Christians are providing as much (or more) relief to hurricane victims than FEMA. What a testament and opportunity to glorify God!
As you pray and decide where to give to touch lives affected by these disasters, we’d like to pass on information we know about organizations doing the most with your donor dollars. The following organizations have been vetted and can be recommended by our team:
Samaritan’s Purse
From the Caribbean to Texas and Florida, Samaritan’s Purse has been one of the first on the ground to minister to those in need. Founded by Billy Graham, their mission is to meet the needs of those who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease or famine — and to do so in the name of Jesus.
Convoy of Hope
Inspired by the people who helped them after their father was killed by a drunk driver, the Donaldson family founded Convoy of Hope with the mission to bring faith-based, international, humanitarian relief to those who are impoverished, hungry and hurting.
Finally, with supplies and contractors headed to help disaster victims, some of the organizations helping our veterans, service members, and their families are seeing increased cost as they strive to serve those who served us. Operation Homefront and Fisher House are both reputable organizations whose programs depend on building and material costs and who will be seeing increased need in the months ahead. Please consider them as you make donations, as well.
All of the organizations listed above have been given a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator. We highly recommend using their tool before giving to any 501(c)(3) organization, as (much like us!) they sift through millions of financial records to evaluate charities and equip people to be better stewards.

Do your homework about potential recipients for your donations. Charity Navigator is a good place to start. I do not personally recommend any national organizations other than Samaritan’s Purse and Salvation Army. Many worthy local organizations exist, I know, and if you can donate to one of these, I am sure your money will be used well.
Stella's Place 
Red Cross can bite me and I’m leery of the ASPCA and The Humane Society, as well. Texas is presently investigating the Red Cross for fraud, and I’ve heard some real horror stories about the other two, too. I’m like Stella – sticking to Samaritan’s Purse, Salvation Army and local churches/charities with specific missions (and who welcome volunteers…..UNLIKE Red Cross and the other two.)

Did you SEE what Red Cross was handing out as a meal in H?? Two nuggets of some sort and English peas??? To Texans??? Whereas a church nearby was handing out full, hot meals – and RC won’t let anyone give food within their prevue. Arrrghhh!!! I mustn’t get started…..

Were you the one who shared a post on Facebook about the Red Cross throwing away thousands of dollars of new blankets, pet food and pet crates? They said they could get new ones in Florida. Disgusting.

Smart woman to stay away from those three. We had a local company that was taking food, blankets, water, toiletries, etc., they had two huge trailers full and red cross wouldn’t take them in Texas. Two days it took them to find a Church that would hand them out to people in need. Everyone they called would not take them. They were actually told by Red Cross that they just needed to send money and people needed to quit bringing trailer loads of supplies without permission.
I’ve heard similar stories from local shelters who got pet food, crates, old blankets, etc. for the animals donated about the ASPCA and The Humane Society, it seems like Red Cross they want money donations instead of things that can be used. Didn’t surprise me at all, but I will be nice and not say what I really think about all three of them.

They gave out cards with their contact information on them
