We are a bit late at it but after putting it off it’s time to get a whole-house generator and another propane tank. This is starting to become a regular gut twist and unless we win the big lottery and get a roof full of solar cells and one of those Tesla walls-of-batteries it’s generator and ptopane.

This is a pretty good article about Melania’s choice of clothing and the media’s view of it. LOL
“Tapson: Melania Trump’s Crimes of Fashion”
“For most women, fashion is shallow fun and nothing more. But for the media, now that a despised Republican is in the White House, virtually everything the First Lady wears will be an occasion for either a bitchy personal attack or an excuse to pontificate about the evils of the administration. FLOTUS, however, will float above it all in her stilettos, untouched by their pettiness, maintaining a dignified beauty. Because that’s Melania’s style.”

And that awful, truly terrible meme that MO was actually a man and calling her insulting pet names always made me sick. It was her politics and racism that were insulting to our spirits and freedoms. Some on our side got so personal instead of dealing with the real offenses and issues.
As my mother used to say, “Rise above, rise above.” And that’s what Melania does…what both she and the President do.

Sometimes, but a lot of the time she just didn’t know how to dress or what to avoid while picking clothing. I remember once Michelle wore a genuinely pretty black and robin’s egg blue dress, but the skirt was all wrong. She needed a bustle to hold the skirt out and she wasn’t wearing one (admittedly, who does anymore?)so it looked bad.

Had a fun adventure w/ 3 of my 4 kids (my married son hadn’t arrived yet) to cap off our Up North week. I convinced my kids to join me in swimming across the lake (something I’d only done once before marriage & kids). My daughter, Clarissa, had 4 years on her high school swim team so was extremely comfortable doing so, Josiah was always going to be an iffy prospect so he was going to Have to wear a life-jacket, & Brandon (J’s twin) was going to ply the rowboat on the way across as our safety net & maybe C or J would row on the way back so I could attempt a return trip joining Brandon on his swim across on the way back…
Well this spontaneous adventure didn’t exactly develop as hoped & took much longer than anticipated so there was no return swim…However Clarissa & I both swam the roughly one mile crossing unassisted but Josiah had to be coaxed, coached, prodded, & eventually “assisted” (having him hang off the back of the rowboat) to complete the crossing “successfully”.
So these kids & I (again) have joined the ranks of some of our forebears & relations in crossing Otsego Lake in Northern Michigan at it’s widest point. My dad & his sister confirmed following our adventure that they had both previously swum across the lake (they both were blessed to spend the entirety of Every Summer of their childhood at The Cottage, escaping Detroit when out of school). My grandma (dad’s mom) & her sister were also both successful lake crossing swimmers. In fact the last time I saw my Great Aunt Bernice, shortly before her death, she shared with great pride the fact that she had swum across the lake in her youth. She also shared how her family had first come to Gaylord from Detroit in the 1910s, her dad being a railroad engineer for the Michigan Central Railroad & discovering a Northern Michigan gem along one of the railways he traveled. So various members of my family have been associated with Otsego Lake in the summer for like a hundred years…& now the kids & I have added a new story/accomplishment to the many Cottage Tales circulating within our extended clan!

Here is the painting for Tipsy Tuesday:
‘The Feast of the Bean King ” (hahahaha – yup- that’s right!) by Jacob (Jacques) Jordaens (1593 –1678). The oroginal of this painting is 118w x 95h inches. He was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and tapestry designer known for his history paintings, genre scenes and portraits. After Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, he was the leading Flemish Baroque painter of his day. Unlike those contemporaries he never travelled abroad to study Italian painting, and his career is marked by an indifference to their intellectual and courtly aspirations. In fact, except for a few short trips to locations in the Low Countries, he remained in Antwerp his entire life. As well as being a successful painter, he was a prominent designer of tapestries. Like Rubens, Jordaens painted altarpieces, mythological, and allegorical scenes, and after 1640—the year Rubens died—he was the most important painter in Antwerp for large-scale commissions and the status of his patrons increased in general. However, he is best known today for his numerous large genre scenes based on proverbs in the manner of his contemporary Jan Brueghel the Elder, depicting The King Drinks and As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young. Jordaens’ main artistic influences, besides Rubens and the Brueghel family, were northern Italian painters such as Jacopo Bassano, Paolo Veronese, and Caravaggio. He apparently also had a great sense of humor! 😉

I think I love the Dutch masters best of all painters. The details, like the cat on the floor on the right, the dog looking to get a taste of what the girl or midget is drinking, and the man eating a fish. Also the man spitting up in the left corner. The reflection in the mirror is a question tho, because it shows the back of two heads and the face of no one in the picture. Could this be the artist?

The wine curmudgeon has the right idea. I try to get the best wine I can for less than $10. My last case included 6 bottles of an Australian chardonnay and 6 bottles of an Italian Pinot Grigio. Other favorites are Washington State chardonnay and dry Reisling, and Spanish rose. I also like Prosecco and other sparkling wines, such as rose. I’m not much of a red wine drinker. Before you ask, I have nothing against California wines, but they tend to be more expensive.

If it tastes good and ends up settling gently on the innards, less expensive wines are perfectly fine with me. Wine snobbery always makes me laugh. I mean, come on!

Saw some snark over the week-end about how Texas should be glad it didn’t secede because of all the Federal money about to roll in for hurricane relief.
WSJ this morning says the President is asking Congress for about $8 billion for Texas. Yup, that’s a lot of money, but it’s not quite 3% of the $280 billion collected by the IRS from Texans in FY 2015.

Seen on Facebook:
From George Copeland, my friend who lives in Houston:
Jackie sent me home, said I looked spent. Haven’t worked like this since I was in the military.
At lunch I was in line behind a drywall contractor in his fresh new advertising tee. His wife, his two sons, a bunch of other young guys who looked like your average Texas small-town football team, everybody sporting the new look.
He said I looked like a man who’s been working in a flooded house. I told him it was dad’s. He asked me where, and I told him, thought that was the end of that.
He said, “We just got through with one in Rosenberg and we’re on our way to another in Katy. If you can wait on us, we’ll come to your dad’s place this afternoon.”
My first thought was I was looking at a contractor who knew a good neighborhood when he heard it. He seemed to see it in my face.
He said, “Yeah, I’m a contractor, but all this work is volunteer. For our church group.”
The wife, the kids in rubber boots. It made instant sense. I have to tell you: it was a real bright spot in another day of indescribably difficult work.
I told him thanks, but we had it cornered at our place. Maybe he’d be making a more needed contribution for somebody who’s really hurting out there. There’s no end of folks in worse shape.
This is still Texas, after all.
Makes me cry when I read about wonderful people like this.

The major fire in the Columbia Gorge (the Oregon/Washington state line) jumped the river into Washington last night. It’s over 10,000 acres now. Apparently started by teens playing with fireworks. I hope they are never identified publicly. Seriously.
The fire was 5,000 acres yesterday and doubled overnight because of heavy east winds pushing it west. It’s now on the northeast side of Portland Metro area and the residential areas along that exposure are being set for evacuation.
Dozens of small towns along I-84 in the gorge were evacuated yesterday. The towns are almost completely deserted, including the businesses.
Some folks are reporting that when they did find a business open and went in to buy boxes of bottled water to deliver to first responders, the business owners gave to them – no charge.
Hundreds of horse trailers crowding the local highways in the middle of the night as animals are evacuated.
I-84 is closed in both directions from Troutdale to Bonneville Dam area (at last report). Only 2 lane state highways are available for any traffic.
Last report they said that those who are evacuating are being allowed to use I-84 just to get out, which makes sense.
The fire extended through/past the Multnomah Falls area overnight, for any who have been at that beautiful site. The fire fighters were able to save the lodge at the falls. I’m glad for that.
Talked to my son in Oregon City a couple of hours ago, which is about 20 miles from the west end of all of this – he said ash is falling. In the Gorge it looks like snowfall.
As the various public officials were giving updates this hour one sprightly reporter asked, “Isn’t it dangerous for the fire fighters to go right into areas where the fires are literally jumping 1/4 mile at a time – might they be caught in dangerous situations?”
This is just the latest massive fire in Oregon/Washington. Really phenomenal. All started with the Eclipse, it did. It’s the moon’s fault.
Even though it’s been near 100 degrees every day, I haven’t seen the sun since Saturday, I don’t think. Just overcast with heavy smoke. The sun is orange and the moon is invisible.
Many Oregon emergency groups are presently on the ground in Houston (animal rescue for example, in a big way) assisting the Texans.
It’s all good.
Get a load of this from AT this morning:

Forgot a couple of things – last night when I was watching local news/updates, at least two of their reporters/weather guys left their station mid-broadcast because their families had been told to get out. They’re back on this morning, reporting things are well with their families and nicely commending their wives (female wives) for the wisdom and quickness with which they had already done much packing before dad got there.
The east wind has lessened and by tonight there should be a mild west wind into the Gorge which will turn the fire back on itself and help immensely.

Back in the late 70s we had a huge range fire at Camp Williams in Utah. We got detailed to drive dozers and graders to cut fire lanes and at times I can still recall the stench of burning sage brush and scrub oak.
Worst part was that the place was sotted with decades of unexploded munitions and while you’d be plowing along through the smoke, heat and dust something would go ‘BOOM!!!’. On the bright side due to the dry air and heat your pants dried out quickly.

Re the reporterette – just included that to assure that all parties are present and accounted for! (Realize that the configuration could make it look like my whole comment was aimed at setting her up – didn’t intend that at all) They are all way too young to understand what the pertinent questions might be. She can’t help it. She’s doing the best she can.
I’m amazed at the size and speed of the fire and the response, the local complications and the readiness. Local and state groups are responding well it seems.
Keep in mind that most counties in Oregon are red so the people manage themselves and their circumstances pretty well.

Hope this wild fire does not impact any of your family and friends in the area.

“Behind everything, escalating the stakes, is the willful ignorance of climate change that many local and national political leaders still cling to.”
Yeah, right. Ray Nagins epic mishandling of Katrina was because he was willfully ignorant of climate change?
Yet despite “willful igorance of climate change”, the response to Harvey from Federal, State, and volunteers has been phenomenal.

Very smoky in Seattle. Ash falling like snow in Bellevue (Largish city on East side of Lake Washington). I smells of burnt wood.

I went out in the garage to get something a couple hours ago and was shocked to realize, as I opened the door from the house into the garage, that I could literally see smoke – as though the house was on fire.
I’ve had a nasty headache for two days with some nausea and I’m concluding that I’m breathing in far more ash and whatnot than I was aware of.
I’m about 35 miles from the Gorge.

Prayers for the people and the animals in danger’s path of these wildfires. I’d much rather think it was a couple kids with fireworks than hear they’re caused by “suspected arson” when we think back to that being one of the means of “jihad” that was discussed.
Sure does seem like the crises are hitting at one time. I’m sure there’s a message in there somewhere about getting our collective acts together.
Thanks a lot for the info, Sharon. I guess it’s that time of year to get out my wildfires links. I never made it down to southern Washington much but lived in Anacortes for ten years; spent lots of weekends driving the fire roads in the Cascades. Beautiful place – it was a balm to my soul.
Stay safe up there.

lilbirdee12’s prayer:
Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.
We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
And, Lord, we pray for help for the people of Texas and Louisiana who are caught in the flooding.
In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
