Good morning all! I’m mixing Doggie day with my weekly bacon recipe, and then adding in the ice cream request! Here is a dog ice cream recipe to make, then of course cook, crumble, and add bacon. Your dog will love you forever 😉
Now for the people bacon ice cream recipe: Go buy your favorite ice cream, soften, add cooked bacon. (What? You expected 2 recipes in one post?)

Contains no milk, cream, eggs or sugar, so what makes it ice cream??? Good for lactose & egg intolerant people. Not that it doesn’t sound good, as I like a mashed banana & p’nut butter sammich. Of course We have a dog who ate a whole wooden broom, & one who regularly eats pens.
I could definitely put bacon in my butter pecan ice cream!

I’ve made banana frozen dessert (not ice cream!) and it is good. I am also lactose intolerant, so I eat Lactaid ice cream which is made from dairy! All of these people who recommend that I eat almond ice cream or coconut ice cream – some of them are good, but they are not the same!

Heading to Houston: North Chicago animal warden on rescue mission to save pets lost in Harvey
Dana Deutsch is heading to her native Houston Thursday morning for a long weekend, but it’s going to be a bittersweet and hectic homecoming.
Deutsch, North Chicago’s animal warden for the past five years, is going to the Texas city with the volunteer group “Operation Bring Animals Home” to help rescue stray and lost dogs and cats caught up in the flooding and chaos wrought by Hurricane Harvey.
“I spent five months on the ground at (Hurricane) Katrina. Disaster response is my passion,” she said.
Animals are her passion too, and she risked life and limb in New Orleans bringing terrified animals out from underneath collapsed homes and flooded areas during Katrina in 2005.
She said that often the animals, especially dogs, are vicious at first because they have been on their own in a disaster for days, but she believes they sense when she is trying to help them and calm down, usually giving kisses rather than baring fangs in the end.
Katrina was madness; Houston might be worse.
“This is way worse,” Deutsch said of what she believes lies ahead for her and other pet rescue volunteers. She added that “Houston is so spread out,” and the flooding is so intense that there is nowhere for the animals to go.
Harvey made landfall Aug. 25, 2017, near Corpus Christi, Texas, as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing 130 mph sustained winds and driving rains and left devastating floods in its wake.
During Katrina, the group she was working with was able to set up a temporary headquarters in a grocery store parking lot with tents and other amenities to serve as a control post for rescue efforts. Finding high-and-dry available space may be harder in Houston than it was in Katrina, she said.
Operation Bring Animals Home is a Wisconsin-based group founded by Karyn Buege, Deutsch said. The group has secured a boat for its efforts, which is being driven to Texas, while Deutsch and other volunteers will be leaving at 5:30 a.m. Thursday to fly to Houston.
One of the main goals will be not only to locate and rescue lost and abandoned animals, but to work with nationwide organizations to establish long-term shelters for the rescued animals, since existing facilities are already overcrowded.
Deutsch only has four days to work with before returning to Lake County, and she knows the trip will be exhausting and emotional for her, but she said she feels called to respond.
“This is home. I have friends and family there. It’s emotional,” said Deutsch, who was a firefighter in Houston before moving to Illinois.
North Chicago Police Chief Richard Wilson said his department is solidly behind Deutsch’s mission.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea that we can send someone there to help,” Wilson said. “It’s great of her to volunteer to go down and help out in another part of the country.”
Deutsch knows what will be waiting: Frightened, traumatized animals that may be dangerous, as well as ones that can’t be saved, come hand-in-hand with the successful rescue, happy-ending stories.
But Katrina prepared her for that, and now she is ready to hit the ground running in her hometown.
“I lived there 35 years,” she said. “This is something I have to do.”
