Apparently Galileo was also an accomplished painter. After looking in vain for examples of his art, I settled on a general overview of his genius…
Galileo’s Revolutionary Vision Helped Usher In Modern Astronomy
The Italian scientist turned his telescope toward the stars and changed our view of the universe
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/Galileos-Revolutionary-Vision-Helped-Usher-In-Modern-Astronomy-34545274/
Galileo makes me think of the following…
“Are the stars out tonight?
I don’t care if it’s cloudy or bright,
’cause I only have eyes for you.
I don’t care if I’m in a garden
or on a crowed avenue.
You are here, so am I,
maybe millions of people pass by
but they all slip away from view
’cause I only have eyes for you.”
– (Hopefully the lyrics are correct since I wrote this from memory. LOL!)

One of the disadvantages of living rural is starting to raise its ugly head: reliance on satellite-based communications. Even though the hurricane is way southwest of us it’s throwing out small bubbles of thunderstorms thst go far enough in the atmosphere to kill the hi-def TV but are not close enough or strong enough to kill the regular definition…not yet.
We gave up on satellite internet, expensive with crappy reception anytime a storm came around, and went to wi-fi when it became available. Still expensive but at least it was there when you needed it. Now we’re looking at the potential of some heavy storms, nowhere near as bad as Texas is expecting, but it brings to mind all of our positions out here were a big storm to hit. We’d have phone and limited internet but no ‘cable’ TV.
You’d think that after the Feds spending two BILLION dollars in the last almost ten years to get reliable hi-speed internet to rural areas we’d have something but…oh what am I saying, it’s the government.

There was a discussion of communications after Katrina, and how there were no local “regular” tv stations left to send local info out. Of course nothing was ever done about it as we went merrily towards all communications being at the whim of some gov’t official’s fingers on a computer keyboard. Next up is radio being moved to computers instead of over the airways, or even worse on that alexa spy device which is constantly advertised as a way to listen to radio.
What’s funny is Mother Angelica, a nun born in the 1920’s, advocated getting your ham radio license. She also started a radio and TV station which is now the largest Catholic station in the world, broadcasting all over the world. All from a little nun with no communications experience. I think it’s such a hoot that she wanted it so much, and she actually did it!

Local TV stations were all flooded, stations out of town did pick up some local news folks and had them doing broadcasts but major problem was that there was zero electricity. The main power yards were all flooded, lines were down and the backup power plant in NOLA East was flooded badly.
We were untouched by flooding on the Westbank of the river but it was still 23 October before we got power back. We were lucky as we had one road in and a few wildcat truckers brought gas in but we paid for it and it was a choice to use it fir generators or your vehicle.
Took a while to get police radios back up, flooding and towers down, but cell companies brought in those emergency cell stations and set them up on high/dry spits until we could get the regular cell towers fixed and their generators refueled. We did have some CB and GMRS and there were hams but power was always an issue, you don’t realize how dependent you are on power until you are totally without it for nearly two months.
Lesson learned, we have more rechargable batteries and solar panels now and will get a propane generator to power the house. We have a propane range and outlets built into the walls outside so we can cook and store food. We’ll be able to charge our cells so even in the midst of a major weather disaster we’ll be able to field calls from Indian pharmaceutical salespersons.

“even in the midst of a major weather disaster we’ll be able to field calls from Indian pharmaceutical salespersons.” hahaha! Glad you were not flooded, and have a generator now. Yes power is an also issue up north during blizzards. A few hours without heat when it’s 10 degrees out, and you’ll notice it. Most people where I live have generators. I’m hoping the gov’t does not continue on the path set by last admin on wood burning stoves. People burn wood up here for heat. It’s only the poor who will be hurt by this. How does it go? 3 minutes without air, 3 hours outside without heat at freezing, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food?

I remember winters in Utah when the power went out…sitting in the living room with snowsuits on. There’s something wherever you are. August here without power for the A/C…90 degrees and 80% or better humidity, give that two hours sans power.

Category 3:
Winds ranging from 111 to 130 mph cause significant damage to property, humans, and animals. Mobile and poorly constructed frame homes are often destroyed, and even well-built frame homes commonly sustain major damage. Significant damage to apartments and shopping centers (even those made of wood or steel) can be expected. Category 3 storms can also cause extensive inland flooding. Electricity and water are commonly unavailable for several days to several weeks after the storm, therefore it’s important for residents to have their own stores of canned food and water.

Harvey easily has the capacity to surpass Katrina in physical and fiscal damage…expect NOLA to go into full ‘you still ain’t done givin’ me all my entitlements’ mode.
I’ve been digging around on the NOAA site and Harvey seems to be a twin of Katrina regarding developnent. There’s a hot water current, the Gulf Loop Current, that enters the Gulf from the Caribbean between Cuba and Yucatan, it can go east through the Florida Straits and/or up the Florida west coast. It circulates thru the Gulf but bubbles can break off, bubbles of hot water just cruising around in tne Gulf.
In ’05 Katrina was a lower level storm until it ran into one of these loose bubbles, fed off of it and blew up to a cat 5. It went off the bubble and into cooler coastal waters just a bit before it hit land so its strength dropped though the surge it kicked up continued thru its own momentum. Looking at the Gulf water temp charts we’re seeing another of these disconnected bubbles, it’s months old and not as hot as the one Katrina hit but still hot enough to feed and quickly ramp-up Harvey. It may not go as high as fast as the doomsday weatherguessers were predicting but then they don’t have an accurate tool to factor in the extra heat. Makes great dramatic theater though.

Problem is that the catagory isn’t all that accurate. Katrina was a cat 3 when it came ashore but its surge was a cat 5 on the Mississippi coast. They need a seperate scale for the surge as it has too many variables.

Strengthening Harvey to bring
life-threatening conditions to Texas
8/25/2017 5:30:51 AM
Hurricane Harvey continues to grow stronger in the Gulf of Mexico. Harvey is a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph sustained winds. Harvey is located about 180 miles southeast of Corpus Christi tracking to the northwest at under 10 mph. Harvey remains in an environment of low vertical wind shear, very high sea-surface temperatures and deep, moist, unstable air. Given these favorable conditions, Harvey should reach Category 3 hurricane strength later this morning.
Harvey will make landfall as a Category 3 or perhaps even a Category 4 major hurricane along the lower coast of Texas early tomorrow morning. A hurricane of Category 3 strength or greater is a major hurricane. This could make Harvey the first major land falling hurricane in the U.S. since 2005.
Harvey will generally move to the northwest over the next 24-48 hours and reach the Texas coast early Saturday morning. At the time of landfall, damaging winds of over 100 mph will lead to extensive property damage, power outages, and life-threatening conditions. Some power outages may last a week or more. Just to the northeast of Harvey’s landfall, a storm surge inundation of 6-12 feet will lead to significant coastal and bay flooding. Further strengthening will lead to higher storm surge inundation. Due to the slow movement of the storm, areas along the coast near where the system makes landfall will experience a prolonged period of hurricane-force winds, further adding to the damage.

” This apartment is full of good intentions that will never reach anything near a realized potential ” How true for me too – I’m at the “get rid of clutter and downsize stuff” stage. Hobbies etc. now have a limited space allowance. I am now forced to prioritize, which will in the end allow more time and space for what is important enough to be left after “the purge”. The less clutter, the more calm. That’s my motto.

“The less clutter the more calm.” I need to do that on a canvas… see how that works… add another project, lol!!!
I love the motto! I’ll keep that in mind while I do my purge, for sure.
Told my younger brother today I didn’t want to leave a mess for family members to have to clean out when I pass. Surprisingly, he gave me a bit of a leeway thought – he said after everyone takes what they want, they call an auctioneer n tells em to put everything in their next auction, and closed with “See how easy that is???” We’ll see what he thinks when I keep more than I otherwise would have, lol!!
Glad to know I’m not alone in this purge stage – “keep/pitch/donate has to be one of the greatest quandries in life for people like us!!

I really like this one. There is something about pictures like this that compels you. What happened here, what people worked here, what if we had a picture with all the people who worked here bustling in and out among the trailers and old buildings. Warehouses?
It kind of reminds me of the old farmer’s market where my dad’s business was. Buildings and trailers, but not that dense. And lots of roofed concrete stalls for the farmers to set out their boxes and baskets.
Also, I used to sell lumber and millwork, very high end windows and doors. I’ve always had a love of old houses, and that really intensified it. I love old brick houses. If you were really lucky, you would occasionally come across one that had the original glass in the windows, wavy, maybe a bubble or two in it. And original wood floors, usually very narrow oak or maple, hard as a rock, and high ceilings with stately trim.
Rare to find an untouched old beauty like that, but, oh, how wonderful when you did. In my mind I always saw children racing up and down the stairs, mom and dad in their chairs by the fire, and a cook in the kitchen, the whole house smelling of fresh bread and fragrant tea.

That old glass is a fluid, like taffy. A very slow fluid. It’s neat to find windows with millimeter open gaps at the top, because they’ve sagged over the years. Women know what I mean. Our newer glass doesn’t do that. At least not in less than a million years.

The building you’re looking at was Hale’s Department Store. The guy still owns, Monopoly™-style that whole section of the block, corner to corner. He lives in Cali, I guess.
The building is abandoned above the first floor. I think it should be torn down. The first floor is florists and clothes stores and handbag stores and jewelry stores and barber shops.
I kindly kick kids off the rooftops every now and then, by telling them it’s private property. They’re just looking for cool places to explore, I know, and to smoke funny things. We did it too. Been illicitly on many rooftops myself, in my early years. For the same reasons.
Tripod lives in a hole in the reddest wall in the right-middle of the last pic, when the weather is inclement. I’ve illicitly shoveled a path through three-foot-deep snow to that hole in the past, which pics I believe I posted to CTH a few years ago.

Clouds make better sunsets, with more color, but people do too.
Every one of these pics is a pic of a person, or four, taking pictures of the sunset.
I’m on my belly, using a conduit (which is steel and encases the electrical wires to the lighthouse itself) as a stabilizer for the phone. And as a cool shot which nobody thought of. There are many big puddles on the pier, so I lay on my belly where the puddles aren’t, and us them for their reflectivity. Because, why not?
I need a better camera.

I don’t mean to be flip by saying that, either.
Everyone who would go to the end of a long pier for sunset is friendly.
In my experience. Never met a mean person there, and then. Just cool folks.

Yes, I need a better camera too. I broke mine when I fell and broke my arm in 3 places. Now I just have a drugstore vivitar, but it can’t take pictures with any definition close-up, far away, or in the dark. Beach camera is where I bought my last one. They were helpful. I can’t stand cameras without an eyepiece. That’s a big thing I want. Any camera suggestions under maybe $400. anyone?

An eyepiece? I prefer a big huge screen, myself.
I’m waiting until tax returns. And I’m going to get one with IP access, so I can upload with it, and not have to remove a memory card, put it in my PC, and then upload.
I’m sure they exist. We’ll see.

The thing I like about my phone is that I can immediately upload the photos to Imgur, even out on the pier. When I get home, I can immediately log in to Imgur and edit and show you the photos. No cables.
That’s why I’m searching for a camera-camera (not a phone) that has Android and WiFi. And better optics than mine.

Sure;
Pentax Optio VS20 16MP Digital Camera with 20X Optical Zoom and 3-Inch LCD Screen (Black)
You have to get SD cards that match the top of the line specifications in 2007-8 or you may end up without pictures or video. I think the 64GB cards I put in hold over 10K pictures and hours of video. The OEM batteries are difficult to source but there are lots of 3rd party makers. Pentax was bought by Richo shortly after and they released a new camera a year or two later using Optio design features.

Yes. Canons have long history of being good cameras. I thought my broken one was Canon, but I just went to check and it was Olympus. It was down to 2 when purchasing, so then the other was a Canon. I think it was more expensive so that’s why I purchased the Olympus.

I have an Olympus auto film camera that I loved (the Super Zoom). It has a really good lens for a fairly inexpensive camera. I am no expert, and I don’t have the patience or expertise to use a really good SLR (and don’t really want to learn either.) My daughter has a digital Nikon SLR that she loves, but ends up using her camera phone half of the time at least.

Thanks. It does not look like it has an eyepiece though. I don’t understand how you can take outside pictures on an even somewhat sunny day. All I can see in my camera screen is a reflection of myself. I really don’t even know what I’m photographing.
Have you heard if the newer cameras are any good since purchase by Richo?
Has anyone bought a refurbished, used camera from a reputable camera store?
Thanks to all. A camera is a big investment. I may have to take my broken camera to be fixed, but there is nowhere around me. So far I have refused to go all the way into Boston to get it fixed.

Nikon D3300, Do not let them up sell you to a package deal, 98% of people don’t use the second lens and the bag is too big and a bother to carry unless you plan on switching lenses often.
It has an eye viewer I prefer it to the screen, not even sure if you can view through the screen for photography as I’ve never checked. You can view your pictures on the screens after you take them. It can be set up to transfer photos (with cable) and automatically delete them from your camera after the transfer.
The lens has a variety of settings, auto, manual, macro, portrait, low light, scenic, and some others.
Automatic built in flash if you want to use it. Flash extension is available if you want to do serious photography.
One other tip don’t buy the $20.00 lens protecter that people use even while taking photos you’re putting a cheap piece of glass over a $200.00 lens and it dose make a difference.
It’s a hobby of mine 🙂 .
It’s a very versatile, easy to use camera.

Or are they two blocks away with an incredible zoom lens?
I still think this is Newtown, CT 2.0.
Only with people who love mosh pits and checks from Soros’ orgs.
I could almost believe mosh pits were two decades of training for these ops. You don’t go into a mosh pit without realizing that you’re going to be injured and that you’re going to injure others, all just for fun. Now it’s for fun and profit. Pick a side. Dress up like your caricature the side you picked. Jump into the mosh pit. It’s just a violent game. They’re all actors, playing their parts. It’s been proven, fer cryin’ out loud. Even the killer driver was a Hillary supporter, let alone the organizer of the Unite the Right group being both a OWS and BLM riot coordinator. They are all playing. Both sides.

Good Morning to Stella, and all the other Stellarites 🙂 Thanks for the pic of the telescope. Wasn’t it made beautifully?
This choice of painting was inspired by Lucille’s post yesterday about Down’s syndrome children, how most are aborted in this country (100% in Iceland, & they’re proud of that), how they give us joy, and are a blessing. In my church growing up there was a couple with a down’s syndrome son who lived to be in his 40’s which was unusual back then. His parents were older, and despite planning, and working for his future, were worried about who would take care of him if they died first. The priest made sure everyone knew, without coming right out and saying it, that we all were to help if that should happen. I remember when you saw a down’s syndrome person you would make the sign of the cross because they possessed an innocence that made them closer to God. Now they are aborted. I fear with scientists now editing human genes we will actually devolve, losing our humanity. I have had medical problems my entire life. Once when I was just fed up with being sick and in pain, my friend said to me maybe my illness is a test by God of those around me. It has been said many times, in many ways we are judged by how we treat the least of us. These people who would kill off all down’s syndrome babies are not perfect either. They forget that once one group is deemed OK to kill it expands, eventually to them, probably when old. This takes away our normal human love, and therefore our humanity, and there is just too much of that visible in today’s “culture”

The study from digital risk management company Digital Shadows finds the courses, available to Russian speakers only, last for six weeks and comprise 20 lectures with five expert instructors. The course includes webinars, detailed notes and course material at a cost of RUB 45,000 ($745), plus $200 for course fees.

Sadly I agree she has dementia. My mom developed dementia after a head injury from a freak car accident. I notice a lot of the same signs: the way her eyes flutter, hesitation in speech, confusing words, people, and memories etc. Her darting, fluttering eyes were worse about 18 months ago, then they must have adjusted her meds. Now she is just deteriorating, and I don’t think it can be fixed by adjusting meds. I wonder how long they’ll prop her up, and what excuses they’ll give when she can no longer speak rationally at all. It’s so sad she feels the need to hold onto power so much she would spend her remaining time doing this.

My dad always said when someone he thought was awful died : “May (insert name here) go to their just reward”, or “(name) has gone to their just reward”. Trump Likely to End DACA Immigrant Program
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-likely-end-daca-immigrant-program-n796091
President Donald Trump appears likely to pull the plug on DACA, the Obama-era program allowing young people who came to the U.S. illegally as children to remain here, several government officials said Friday.
Administration officials said Friday that the Homeland Security secretary, Elaine Duke, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions discussed the program with senior officials Thursday during a meeting at the White House. Sessions has been a consistent opponent of the program.
As many as 1 million immigrants could be affected.
Trump is said to be weighing whether to let DACA gradually expire or end it immediately, but the officials said it is not yet clear which option Trump may choose.
The program “continues to be under review,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, told reporters Friday.

Great article Col. and spot on in my opinion.
They know what awaits them in the future.
They need to bring about 1984 soon or lose power forevermore.
Or worse. They fear the awakening populace.
It is coup time or noose time; they are attempting to rile up the useful idiots of both ideological extremes with paranoia and disinformation in one massive play of identity politics to help undermine the duly-elected leader of the United States – the man who kept them from a total victory.
And that leader has all the dirt on them now.
The core of the truth that we are watching unfold is right in those words. We are seeing a battle that President Trump has been preparing for, for decades and all his opponents have been caught off guard. I mean President Elect Trump had Mitt Romney groveling at his feet after candidate Trump said “If I told Mitt to get on his knees he would have gotten on his knees.
And that leader has all the dirt on them now I have been saying this ever since candidate Trump revealed Lindsey Grahm’s cell phone number. Trump always, always has motivation behind his words and actions and often he has a specific target in mind and the target hears it loud and clear. We hear the general statement and it makes us smile, the target hears the specific threat and it makes them shudder.
We are witnessing a time in history when the elites are waking up with more fear than that movie producer in The Godfather did who woke up with a severed horse head in his bed.
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!__Hillary Clinton
Funny I picture Hillary wild eyed, typing that line over and over again like Jack in The Shinning. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!
“If that f – – – ing bastard wins, we all hang from nooses!
Bingo.

Yup.
And if black America wakes up to what Democrats, the MSM, and even RINOs did to them these last 60 years, on purpose, there will be hell to pay for all of them. There will be a shortage of available lamp-posts and rope.
I pray for that awakening.
