Stella's Place 
I went out to watch this about every night for a week year before last. It took hardcore determination, but I finally saw some. I parked in a church lot about a mile away.

I waited outside my house long enough to see one shooting star each of the peak nights…but it took like 15 minutes each time, between the Detroit light pollution & general haze in the sky. God’s made the heavenlies glorious!!!

When I was about 16, our church youth group went camping particularly to watch the meteor shower. At night we would lie on our backs in the grass to watch. You have to be in a really dark place to see well.
This past weekend was the best viewing time, but we are still in the meteor shower field for another 10 days or so. Viewing time is after midnight in the northeastern sky.

We slept out on a beach on Lake Superior when I was about 14, I remember the amazing stars and seeing a few shooting stars. A very good memory.

My brother discovered a “Dark Park” near Mackinac City & apparently the night sky is even more amazing than our typical Northern MI views at the Gaylord Cottage.
Sleeping Under the Stars ranks among my favorite memories!

Some of my very favorite memories are being at our cottage as a child and watching the night sky, we could always find the big and little dipper.
Once I was in high school and would bring friends up from Chicago they couldn’t believe the amount of stars in the sky. Happy happy memories.

Maybe that’s why lefties get so skewed in the big cities where they’ve been herded for generations–the man-made light pollution obscures so much of God’s glorious night sky & their souls miss out on the nightly gift of perspective & refreshment those of us receive who turn our eyes & hearts heavenward!

I am always amazed by how many people never leave the city in which they are born. Until I was an adult I ignorantly didn’t know such people existed. I can’t imagine.

My dad had a much older cousin who he thought had never been outside of his rural Michigan county in his lifetime (which extended into the mid 1900s)–he was of good farming stock & may have been among the relations that left full gas cans in the ditch by a particular mile marker allowing my grandpa to head Up North to hunt during WWII…

I don’t find that so surprising because it was a different time, people were more likely to stay local, now people can travel from city to city or state to state with ease if they desire to do so.
I think it is very sad for people in the inner city who never get out of it to experience any other reality.
I think I have told this story here before, I was meeting a woman to bring her something, (I think a gift card for a grocery store and some groceries) she was couch surfing so essentially homeless and didn’t have a home to meet me in. She said that she had lived in Waukesha her entire life and was in her 30’s. I told her we could meet at the public library, it has a huge foyer with tables and chairs.
She said that would be great. Then she told me that she didn’t know where the library was located. I should know by now not to be surprised by things but once again I was surprised.

Yes it’s amazing how different our lives can be. I remember encountering a man in Tulsa when I worked in the hospital who was illiterate…it was the first time I ever knew that about an adult & it floored me.
A few years back my husband invited a dear friend of his (who happened to be black) Up North for a weekend at my parents’ Cottage. His friend went along & had a wonderful time but said “black people don’t go Up North” (I believe he’d grown up in Detroit).
Josiah has had a number of different Respite Care Workers over the years & several have been black & often were from (or spent significant time in) Detroit. Several of them have made statements like “black people don’t swim” or “blacks don’t shop in black stores because they know they’ll get better service in” white run businesses. Some of these concepts/perspectives blow my mind!
One RCW & I had an extremely frank discussion on racial issues (she was black & had lived in Detroit previously). She shared at great length the inherent prejudice within blacks (in Detroit) based on the darkness of their skin tone, with lighter skinned people usually having higher perceived status. Or black businesses Expecting other blacks to patronize them just because they were black owned/run. These conversations were pretty eye-opening to me!

Yes, as with many things, hymns learned in childhood are seldom forgotten.
It surprises me sometimes how much of the words come quickly to me when singing in a church service, so much so that I don’t need to consult the hymnal even though I haven’t sung a particular song for maybe 50 years.
The importance of those days of learning and reciting cannot be measured. Connected to that are memories of family and friends which pop up to bring happiness, sorrow, satisfaction or regret. Our God-given minds are such wonderful blessings.
May today only your beautiful memories remain.

Just an observation, but it seems that some people always find the negative about a story, even one meant to be helpful or informative, like the one here about the eclipse.
Reminds me of a story about my daughter. When she was quite small, she was riding in the car with her grandparents, and was angry about something. Her grandmother tried to distract her by saying, “Look at the beautiful trees!” My daughter responded, “I’m looking at the stumps.”
And so are some folks. Always looking at the stumps.

I was too and I have worked hard to try to change my attitude, and I continue to work at it every day. My parents bitched and moaned about everything every day. I barely remember them having any happy days.

My mother was so negative. But, my father was very positive. She came from a family that was just that way. Nice people, but they tended to bitch a lot about everything and everybody. They would do anything to help you, but they would tell you a hundred times what you did wrong to make you need help.

Singing praises to God. Loudly. If they can do it, so can I, and so must I.
We must praise God. No matter what happens. No matter what Leftists do to us. And they always will do this to us, when they get the chance, and the power. A leopard can’t change it’s spots. A Godless Prog will always tend toward making mass graves happen.
Those of us who survive their inevitable pogroms will praise God, loudly.

I don’t know what happened on the eclipse thread, but I do know that is has been rare in the past that I have been able to do a post, even a religious or holiday post, and not get negative political commentary. I quit writing for some time because of it.

There was a lovely person at CTH whose name I can’t remember, who posted often on the daily thread about her faith and got such lousy feedback from some. I don’t think she posts there anymore. Sad.
The helpful thing to keep at the forefront of our minds is that this enmity against us is part and parcel of Jesus’s suffering for us…in this world you will have tribulation, but don’t be afraid…I have overcome the world. He says He will never leave us or forsake us. We occasionally “leave” Him, but He woos us back and accepts our confessions and repentances with the love and grace that is His character. THANK YOU, LORD!

Number 101 in the hymnal. It was my favorite when I was growing up. I asked Reverend Rose to put it on the list so often he finally just included it every 4 Sundays at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Miami.

As we know, calls to heads of U.S. states, protectorates, and other nations are not, as a general rule, made public. This one was. Now a wise person would realize there was a meaning in that by the President. Yes, chess! Yes, messaging! Yes, the art of the deal! Yes, remaining vigilant! Yes, PRESIDENT DONALD JOHN TRUMP!

Yes. There were certainly other phone calls prior to this less formal one. Those were not posted, likely at the President’s command. It’s also certain that the governor received permission to post this call when he was told by General Kelly (?) the President would be calling, thus the photographer at the ready. Subject matter would have been intimated beforehand, of course, so that no classified material would be recorded. Part. of. a. plan.

at age 19, I had an internship in Lenzburg Switzerland at HeRo Conserven AG which among a ton of other food products, made sausages and other pork products in part of their huge operation.
so one day I was sent to the slaughter operation and the continuous processing of the pork from live pig, killed and hung on hooks, moved through butchery and separated into many product trails, and much left over went into sausage pot which went into stuffing sausages into the intestine casing for the product….and there was an over riding pungent not pleasant odor, which was totally unnoticed by anyone else there….and a group of dignitaries were brought into the center floor, where a buffet table was set up with sausages, cheese, apple cider and whatever, and spicy mustard for samples….and they all chowed down while I toyed with the concept of finding a hiding place to puke.

In 7th grade, my class toured the John Morrell meat packing plant in Ottumwa, Iowa. It started with the hogs coming out of the polisher whole, and went from there.
There was a strong raw meat scent that was not quite objectionable, and when the tour completed, we were each given a plain, cold, raw frankfurter. No bun, no mustard, just the meat.

I was in a little shop with all kinds of natural things, it was neat in that it had lots of cool stuff like fossils, shark teeth, “tornado in a bottle,” and so on, my girls were little, we were home schooling and it had a lot of great stuff for hands on education. The girls were looking at something when suddenly I heard McDonald’s music, I asked the sales clerk if they sold it and he said “Yeah, sure”.
This is the song I heard in the store and I have been hooked ever since.

Oh, dear.
When I read that, an immediate memory brings up a busy street in Washington, DC, almost exactly this time in August, about thirty years ago.
Our younger son had just graduated from high school and we had driven cross country from Palmdale, CA to pick up our older son, a Marine stationed at Camp LeJeune. We were making the rounds of the historical sites in DC and Pennsylvania, etc.
On that particular day, as the four of us were walking the DC streets and taking in the history, etc. we crossed a busy bridge, making use of the sidewalks, when we saw a sign firmly affixed mid-crossing: “NO STANDING HERE”.
Well, you know the rest.
Younger son looked me and said, “Mom?”
And I said, “Of course.”
So he stood there and I took a photo to memorialize the moment.
Imagine the man hours invested and reimbursed to provide us with that.

North Korea Backs Off Threat to Hit Guam
Hours after China took steps to support U.N. sanctions, North Korean state media says Kim Jong Un decided not to fire on Guam
North Korea pulled back its threat to attack a U.S. territory, after days of trading increasingly bellicose rhetoric with U.S. President Donald Trump, and hours after China took its toughest steps against Pyongyang to support U.N. sanctions.
North Korean state media said Tuesday that Kim Jong Un had made his decision not to fire on Guam after visiting a military command post and examining a military plan presented to him by his senior officers. But it warned that he could change his mind “if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions.”
The turnabout came as the U.S. and China were engaged in a delicate contest on two fronts, with each trying to push the other to handle the North Korea situation in the way it preferred, even while both sparred over trade issues that they insisted were unrelated.
Beijing said it would ban imports of North Korean coal, iron and seafood, starting Tuesday, measures that hew to sanctions passed by the U.N. Security Council this month targeting Pyongyang’s nuclear-arms program. The timing of the announcement was a response to Mr. Trump’s plans to kick off a probe into China’s alleged theft of U.S. intellectual property, according to people with knowledge of the Chinese leadership’s thinking. That probe was officially announced later on Monday.
“This action on North Korea should help ease the renewed trade tensions,” a government adviser involved in making policy said. China had been expected to disclose such steps and said in an official statement that its move was made to enforce the latest U.N. sanctions.
Beijing’s move on North Korean imports followed a weekend phone call between Mr. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on how to deal with North Korea’s advances in developing nuclear weapons and missiles.
Mr. Trump on Friday warned that U.S. military resources were in place, “locked and loaded,” should North Korea “act unwisely.”
North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile program has advanced rapidly, and a missile test in late July put the continental U.S. firmly in range of a strike. Pyongyang this month threatened to lob missiles toward the Pacific island of Guam.
The advances have prompted questions about whether Mr. Kim’s regime obtained Soviet-designed rocket engines. The liquid-propellant rocket engines North Korea has been using in recent tests were probably acquired through illicit channels originating in Ukraine or Russia, a report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies said Monday.
Stephen Noerper, a professor of political science at Columbia University and senior director at the Korea Society, warned tensions on the Korean peninsula were liable to quickly ramp up again, given upcoming joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea slated to begin next week in South Korea.
“I don’t think we should overassume,” he said. “The escalatory nature of things on the peninsula are that you can go from zero to 10 very quickly…This could get very hot again.”

Earlier on Monday in Seoul, before news of Mr. Kim’s decision, Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the U.S. must take threats from North Korea seriously, despite fresh skepticism from South Korea that Pyongyang has the ability to reliably deliver an intercontinental ballistic missile to the U.S.
“I honestly think it’s an academic issue whether it can happen today or happen tomorrow,” Gen. Dunford told reporters after wrapping up meetings with South Korea’s president and other defense officials.
Gen. Dunford noted that North Korea had conducted missile and nuclear tests “at a historic rate”—at least 15 tests in the past year.
But uncertainty remains about the North’s ability to endanger the American homeland or even Guam.
Those doubts were underscored Sunday by a senior South Korean defense official, who said that both Seoul and Washington had concluded Pyongyang lacks the missile re-entry technology to successfully launch an intercontinental ballistic missile at the continental U.S.
John Delury, a China historian and North Korea expert at Yonsei University in Seoul, said Mr. Kim’s decision was likely a response to more tempered language from the Trump administration over the weekend, including from Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo, national security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster and Secretaries of State and Defense Rex Tillerson and Jim Mattis.
“The signaling from the Trump administration dialed it down a notch—we have to give them credit,” Mr. Delury said. Referring to an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Mr. Delury added, “When’s the last time the secretary of state and the secretary of defense wrote an op-ed together?”
Mr. Trump’s move on Monday was part of an effort to juggle Washington’s competing policy goals with China, balancing the desire for more cooperation in controlling North Korea against a desire to curb the $347 billion bilateral trade deficit.
Mr. Trump made no mention of China’s import ban while at the White House signing ceremony on Monday in which he directed aides to explore the prospect of sanctioning Beijing for the “unfair” acquisition of American technology. He also offered no indication that tensions with China had eased: He said as he signed the directive that “this is just the beginning.”
The directive was the first formal China trade action taken by a president who has long blasted the country for improperly aggressive commercial practices.
“We will stand up to any country that unlawfully forces American companies to transfer their valuable technology as a condition of market access,” Mr. Trump said, echoing a complaint made frequently by U.S. firms seeking entry to the world’s second largest economy. “The theft of intellectual property by foreign countries costs our nation millions of jobs and billions and billions of dollars each and every year,” he added.
While Mr. Trump’s tone was tough, the process he launched was measured.
He specifically ordered his trade representative to begin a study into whether to launch a formal investigation about complaints that Beijing forces multinationals to license valuable technology to Chinese companies as the price of entry into China’s markets. Aides said if the investigation does proceed, it could take a year before any decisions are made on imposing trade sanctions.
Mr. Trump has said he would cut Beijing slack over trade disputes if he felt the Chinese were being helpful in reining in Pyongyang. But there is a difference of opinion within the administration on whether to keep economic and security issues on separate tracks, said a person who was briefed on the process of formulating Monday’s China order.
The White House had originally planned to unveil the China probe in early August, but put the announcement off until after China voted on Aug. 5 in support of the Security Council resolution on North Korea, according to people familiar with the deliberations.
Asked whether the White House was linking its handling of China trade pressure with the North Korea issue, a senior administration official said “these are totally unrelated events.”
China, too, separated the issues. “The North Korean nuclear issue and the China-U.S. trade issue are totally different and it is not appropriate to use one as a tool to keep pressure on the other issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday before the move to curb North Korean imports.
She said China has been improving its regulations on intellectual property rights, while boosting social awareness of the issue.
North Korean state media didn’t immediately comment on China’s announcement.
China is by far North Korea’s biggest trading partner, accounting for more than 80% of North Korea’s external trade for the past five years.
China has long shied away from severe punitive steps, such as cutting off fuel and food supplies, that could trigger the collapse of the North Korean regime.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly questioned China’s willingness to ratchet up pressure on North Korea.
In recent months, his administration moved toward unilaterally tightening sanctions, targeting Chinese companies and banks the U.S. says are funneling cash into Pyongyang’s weapons program.
Beijing has resisted Washington’s suggestions that it isn’t doing enough to pressure Pyongyang, saying the U.S. must directly engage North Korea to curb its nuclear ambitions.

This is what I was blessed to be able to watch, two Saturdays ago, live.
A 22 year old kid on stand-up bass, 10 guitar players in four generations, a banjo, and a fiddle. All in the dark in a campground. That’s what it’s all about.
I knew a couple of the kids when they were like four or so.
Now they’re in the band. That’s real Bluegrass. They all have a deer or two under their belt, with their guns. NPR would hate them for that.
Popular Bluegrass is Popular because they’re “made”. Because they’re Established Libs. They say the right things.
Real Bluegrass is out in the yard with friends.

Just watched some of it.
Oddly, Trump repeatedly stated he wanted the facts before making a statement.
Trump seriously needs to view the long recording of events. He needs to see
the illegal attendees (no permits) terrorize drivers attempting to leave the area
and the resulting obvious display of panic by the drivers. Two pedestrians were
injured. This happened before the fatal accident. The illegal crowd there did the
same thing, regarding terrorizing the driver. The video clearly shows someone
running in front the vehicle and almost being struck by the left front corner of
the vehicle. Had the driver not applied the brakes (brake light was on in the
picture); the person would have been struck. This is just seconds before the fatal
accident. If the driver’s intent were to kill, why use the brakes? Then his vehicle
was attacked. A water bottle made impact (the sound is obvious in the recording)
and undoubtedly caused the driver’s mind to panic and go into survival mode. The
driver is 20 years old and in fear of his life. A few seconds later, a fatal accident
and more panic. Cannot go forward, in the middle of an illegal, unruly crowd and
LEA is nowhere in sight. Only exit was reverse, in panic mode, without any logic;
except to stay alive and not be killed by an angry, illegal, unruly mob. Trump did
not have all the facts before he spoke about the incident. My opinion, with facts,
backed by the various videos of the Va situation and terrorizing of the drivers.
Yes, Trump received my vote and will, again. Is Trump perfect? No. Never met a
perfect person. However, Trump needs to view the available video to gather more
facts of the unruly, illegal mob terrorizing drivers by attacking their vehicles. Who
removed LEA and allowed the unruly, illegal mob to terrorize the drivers? Why
were they not arrested for not having a permit? Had they been, a person would
still be alive and several would not need to have their wounds attended. The
person who terrorized the driver by throwing the bottle that impacted the vehicle
should be held accountable for the pedestrian’s death; as well as, the many
people injured before, during, and after the fatal accident. Again, just my opinion.

I just watched a show on A&E, Leah remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. I just had it on and got interested in what she was saying. It was riviting. I think it is a series.
My first husband had a really nice friend who was very shy. He started going to the Scientology Church back in the early 70’s and it seemed to help him overcome his shyness. He invited us to go with him one night. I became VERY uncomfortable and almost had an argument with one of the scientologists who was supposed to be counseling us. I started shaking and by the time we got to our car I was crying hysterically and shaking like a leaf. I felt that place was totally evil. Luckily, I convinced my husband before we got home.

Scientology is a religion made up by L. Ron Hubbard pretty much on a bet with a fellow writer that he could invent a religion and people would flock to it. The writer, Harlan Ellison, later wrote about his conversation with Hubbard, and a friend of Harlan’s also related the story to me. Scientologists know all about Ellison and would love to see him dead.
BTW, one of Harlan’s science fiction stories was made into this strange film starring Don Johnson looking younger than the 26 he was at the time….

At one time I had every single episode on VHS tapes. So many of the stories were excellent. And the music by major stars of the day…wow! With that great Miami backdrop, and the beautiful cars, it couldn’t miss.

I read a lot of Sci-Fi/Fantasy as a kid. When I was 12 I read Hubbard’s Mission Earth decology. Sick, twisted stuff. Pulp fiction, and insanity, in ten novels.
The whole SF/F community, besides Lewis and Tolkein, is beset with sickness, evil, and depravity.
Castalia House exists for this reason. Tor and Baen are about to be destroyed, by the weight of their own corruption.
Say what you will about Vox Day, but his publishing company is going to dominate SF/F.
Who was the chick in SF/F who was molesting her daughter with the help of her SF-author husband, and is still celebrated by that crowd today? Gah, can’t remember.
Oh, I remember. Marion Zimmer Bradley. Celebrated even now. The dude was Walter Breen.

BTW, Johnson was really handsome in person; probably still is. He has the loveliest color of smooth skin. My employer and he were long time friends. Luckily I got invited to parties where the young newcomers were in attendance. Crazy days!

If you would like to pray that Tom Cruise leave the billion dollar scam it would be great. the more prayers the better. It is such nonsense and evil. If you are within the orb of rightness of Scientology, nothing bad is supposed to happen to you, Tom Cruise just hurt himself during a stunt so he will have to atone (funny you can atone with $$$$$).
It was believed by many that John Travolta’s son was taken off his anti seizure medicine to prove that the Scientology was working and he was now a pure Scientologist. I don’t know if John took his son off of his meds or not but it would be in keeping with Scientology doctrine.

If Cruise left he could bring the whole system down.

Lincoln Memorial Vandalized With Red Spray Paint

Someone has vandalized the Lincoln Memorial, the National Park Service says.
The words “F— law” were found written in red spray paint early Tuesday on a pillar at the monument that overlooks the Capitol building and National Mall, NPS said Tuesday afternoon. The graffiti was found about 4:30 a.m.
“It’s frustrating, not only for the Park Service but certainly for the visitors that come here, that anyone would vandalize any of our iconic memorials. Especially the Lincoln Memorial. Especially with everything that’s going on now — the calls for unity and people to come together,” NPS spokesman Mike Litterst said.
“To go to the site of the memorial to Abraham Lincoln and do that, that’s disappointing,” he continued.
Someone also scratched the stone.

This NPR affiliate is trying its best to get Hoffman to say otherwise, and the story is written to still hope for maximum damage. I’m surprised they went with the story. Only imbecilic lefties still believe anything about Trump/Russia/Putin collusion, anyway. But it’s nice to get something in print even if the left will ignore it.

Sorry I haven’t updated in awhile, but been doing a lot of running and life has a way of keeping on going. He really hasn’t changed, not any worse and not any better. Still on a lot of machines and still being kept sedated.
