Probably inconsequential in the overall, but the hunt clubs have so screwed the feral pig population by bringing in Russian boars that the Russian boar genes are becoming dominant even two or theee generations removed. More and more of the regular pigs are showing those nasty Russian traits…they’ve hacked our pigs too.
Now, coming home last week, I see two big black tailed deer dies just standing in the road right by our gate…not unusual to you west of La/Ms but thrybain’t homies here. State Wildlife said they’ll check but they might be exotics like Sitka or Sika deer that have escaped/been released by exotic breeders. They’ll also look at who has licenced exotic deer in the area but to me I’m betting one of the huge hunt clubs in the area stocked them. One more illegal immigrant group to worry about.

One, they’re staying on the farms on the north side of the road where there’s less pressure, if any. I still see sounders out feeding on pastures but the cattle owners would rather put up with hogs than allow them to be shot…too afraid cows will get spooked or hit.

Today a friend emailed me historic photos from America’s Great Depression. The first one is of New York’s Central Park with a caption that indicated it was taken in the 1930s. Thinking that the caption had to be wrong, I checked it out online. And, yes, sure enough it depicts a “Hooverville” encampment in a totally run-down area of the over-all dilapidated park…
This one from 1938 depicts a man carrying all his possessions in a bag. He probably stayed in a “hobo camp” while looking for employment wherever he could find it just so he could eat…
Good reminders of what many Americans went through…no home, no food, but more than willing to work.

Got a foashback to Resurrection City in DC. I was barely back from VN and we got a vhance to go to DC and see the Poor People’s March residue. The ‘marchers’ set up a makeshift shanty town on the Mall and when they were done expressing their outrage they left a huge mess that took bulldozers and loaders days to clean up. Other edge of the sword.

In 1937 my mother and father lived in the countryside of Ventura County, CA. My dear father was lucky to have a job which paid him $15 a week–enough to pay their rent, buy gas, etc. for their ancient car, food for the table, and purchase items for their first child, my brother. There were no locks on the house front/back wood doors, just the hook/eye on the screen doors, and no locks on the windows. Home alone with a newborn baby, still it didn’t occur to my mother to be scared of the transients coming through looking for work.
As a sign of respect, the men would always come to the back door of my parents’ small house, never the front, making sure they created enough noise as they approached the screen door so as to not startle my mother who usually spent the daytime in her kitchen. They would politely ask if she had any work they could do. More often than not the answer would be “no.” But she always had a pot on the stove and would offer the men bowls of soup and glasses of water. One thin young man she remembered didn’t even wait for the very hot soup to cool down at all before drinking it down, he was that hungry.
This is the kindness and giving nature many Americans showed during the Depression. You shared what little you had and were happy to do it, and hired the down and out to do odd jobs when you could. That was how Mom and Dad and their families lived their lives and voluntarily performed their Christian service.

My mother told me that one of my uncles, his wife and their children lived in a tent for a while (in the city!) He was rather the ne’er do well in the family. My mother was a widow with two children. They lived with my grandmother in the country in a tiny house that the family built for them in the orchard of the family farm. My mom walked to work (wherever that was, depending on the time) in one of the nearby towns, at least five miles in one direction. If she was lucky, someone would give her a ride. I know that she worked at one time in the school cafeteria as a cook.

Lucille…I remember what momma called “hobos” who came through generally from riding trains…and they were just as you described…humble, and in need…she always fed them on our front porch and gave them water too….they were careful not to frighten anyone, and went away without “casing the neighborhood” like we think about now.

My father left the family farm at 16 during the depression. It colored his whole life. He set out into a very harsh world, and quickly worked and horse traded his way into the early beginnings of his business.
He was not a good man for most of my life, but he was a man who built what during my childhood was a pretty large and thriving wholesale produce business with trucks running all over the country. He was a very good businessman, and a very hard worker.
If his moral compass had functioned and he hadn’t destroyed his own life, along with too many others as well, there is no telling what he could have accomplished, and it all started with a young man facing hunger during the depression who horse traded his way into a load of half rotten watermelons.
I was raised with the idea that the next Great Depression was barelling at me, and only the prepared would live.

My best friend was a social worker. She would never give those begging any money. She said here in FL there were services they could get and most of them knew it. But, there were also rules they had to go by and most just didn’t want to follow them.

my favorite personal experience was some 20 years ago in Albuquerque passed a young man with a German Shepherd dog on his leash…hippie dude…had a cardboard sigh….”Please Help. Will Work for Dog Food”….and lots of folks stopped and gave because of the dog.

Josh, you’re right about panhandlers with dogs. They were hard to turn down. Some of my friends carried dog biscuits in their purses for just such occasions.
Having lived in southern California most of my life (moved out of state after retirement), I was used to seeing “homeless” people. Certain sections of downtown L.A. were full of cardboard boxes where great throngs of drug addicts, alcoholics and mentally ill lived. Some of the people were aggressive and insulting, but most merely watched the passersby without saying anything.
When you were called to jury duty or had other business in the government buildings, you occasionally had to wade through these men and women standing or sitting around. Why security personnel allowed this is beyond me. Coming out of court in the evenings after dark could be harrowing.
A goodly percent of these indigent persons had long since lost any desire to work, and without skills–work and social–would not have been hired even if they still wanted it. Sometimes I would see social workers, either government or private religious, moving among the men speaking with them, handing out information as to where they could seek counseling. Humongous amounts of money is spent in trying to solve the problems of these lost people. The rarity is when all their ministrations actually work.

I was working in social work in the 80’s in Oklahoma in the era where it was the rage to close all the various institutions. It seems that the pendulum swung too far in that direction, and even now that there remain some people who would be better served in the depressing institutional system rather than fending for themselves on the streets. The mentally ill, severely disabled, & chemically dependent people that run the streets now in at least some cases could be better cared for in some of those institutions.
I suppose such outreach/ministry is truly the business of “the church” & back in the days where common decency prevailed & there wasn’t the pervasive nanny state to do what would previously have been seen as the church’s duty many of these troubled & needy people would have been cared for on an individual basis.
In the early 90’s while working in social work I ran into an elderly “homeless” man who basically lived in a hobo camp on the outskirts of the city. He had lost one hand to skin cancer & appeared to have a silver-dollar sized possibly cancerous growth on the back of his remaining hand. I mentioned some resources I knew of, like free medical care, but he wasn’t interested. He was incredibly sweet in our interactions & seemed to “choose” his particular lifestyle to some extent.
I’ve seen articles online about the “homeless” panhandlers hanging around various high-traffic intersections in some metro areas. Some of them allegedly pulled in more money “begging” than my husband’s annual salary. It seems that the “teach a man to fish” philosophy would be in order, but perhaps some don’t actually Want to work but would rather live off the system &/or the generosity of kindhearted people.
Jesus was wise & prescient in including “the poor you will have with you always” in The Book!

I remember a guy in Scotland who played a keyboard on the High Street every weekend for money. He looked blind and had strange eyes, but could play really well. One day, the old fart nearly ran me over in the grocery store parking lot driving a new car!. After that, I always chuckled when I saw him looking so down and out on the sidewalk. I’d give a wink on my way by!

His music was very entertaining, I must say. I also liked a couple of bagpipe players, and The Salvation Army Brass Band. Nothing like Christmas carols and ankle deep snow shopping during the holidays. The town centre was pedestrianized so no auto traffic, Just an ancient town with a few real reindeer, and old gas-lights. Between the shops there were cozy pubs with a coal fire to warm your tootsies!

During the depression, which coincided with 5-6 years of no crops at all in eastern Montana because of dry conditions, my dad left the farm (leaving Mom with five young children there) and went to North Dakota to work in the coal mines to get cash for the things they couldn’t produce on the farm. They would have still had milk, butter, cream, eggs – but no flour, fruit, potatoes, carrots, onions. Still things that had to be purchased during the dry years.

Maybe I’m the only that doesn’t find that kind of thing funny. Never did, but even less now. There’s nothing funny about flagrant, public, unlimited, institutionalized, human porn.
“The culture” does, at some point, include individuals. We make up the culture. So don’t use this kind of language and visuals and then complain about the culture or the snowflakes.

What you said is actually a bit of disconnected nonsense which equates “having our own opinions” with imposing filthy language and visuals on others in a supposedly polite conversation setting. Nevertheless, I definitely see what you intend.
Like I have said at other times, it’s a timesaver to accept what people reveal about themselves.
If exposure to filthy talk and visuals is a requirement for conversation I don’t mind limiting conversation. It is that important to me.

Here is a podcast excerpt from Bishop Barron’s upcoming David the King series. This is some of the best OT commentary I’ve read or heard. Centered on the books of Sameuel, he tells Hannah’s story and the anointing of David. From Adam through Christ, he ties together some really good threads, and brings life to characters often eclipsed by David.
It’s rare for me to listen to something like this unless I’m in the car. It’s about 25 minutes, and worth it. I recommend it with your morning coffee.

The other day there were posts here re the falling away of the once-faithful and churches being nearly empty throughout the world. This type of message from Bishop Robert Barron is exactly what would once again put Christians on fire about our faith, about our Lord, about His written word telling us of the great people of faith down through the ages, and help us to courageously speak out about the Gospel…the Good News From God.

Watering down and modernizing the faith was supped to bring in the “hip” crowd. Ha! That is a huge reason churches are empty.
People go for the real thing or not at all. There is always a good time to be had down the street somewhere. We are to be nourished by churches.
Man young families are thronging to parishes where there is traditional, reverent Liturgy. Fortunately for us, most of the young priests have been raised on such respect and reverence, faith and beliefs. I think we are beginning to tread water again. We may even thrive again, who knows?

I heard on the radio yesterday that someone wrote a take-down of Google’s crazy hiring policies and said among other things that women were not really cut out to be engineers. Cue …women who work for Google taking sick days in response.

I hate that he was fired, but I would like to know the back story, not just what the feminist media tells us. Something tells me there is a lot more to it.

historic cookbooks always start out like
go pick a mess of greens in the woods….wash them thoroughly in the running water of the streem, shake excess water off and put them on a stool next to the water pump handle….get out an iron skillet and put in on the wood stove with medium temperature, and put three lumps of hog fat in the skillet until it is rendered, then put the greens in the hot grease and allow them to get limp and somewhat brown, drain fat into the fat saving bucket and add chopped onions from the root cellar along with a pinch of white sugar and a switchet of ground up black pepper, then peel 14 white Irish potatoes and slice thinly with a very sharp blade, and soak the slices for a half a day in cool water in the shade…pour off water and wash the potato slices and then combine them with the contents of the skillet and slowly add enough clean water to cover, bring to a rolling boil and then move to the other side of the iron stove and allow them to simmer for enough time to go sit on the front porch with a scarf filled with chunks of ice from the icebox so you can cool off before taking the food off of the fire, being careful at that time to use a cloth pad to not burn your hand, and transfer the skillet to the metal zinc and washboard surface to dish the food into a common serving bowl for dinner.
enjoy with the family after blessing the food and thanking the spirits for not rotting the potatos.

Ronny seemed to have a small calibre hole in his head when the body was removed from the airplane crash..kinda like Vince Foster who committed suicide in his car with two shots to the back of his head for two different pistols, neither of which was found in the car.

Met the SF guy who para sailed into the crash site before anybody was there. Gave first aid to the AF stewardess, yes she had survived the crash, Brown had two holes in the back of his head, naked, wearing only a tie, remnants of a shirt, no shoes, only socks. Everybody else was clothed, though clothing was ripped away on some.
That’s all he said, though he had more to say, he said; I’ve said enough…….And that’s all I’m going to say also……

Yup, might find himself on one of those Latin American missions gone awry and compromised.
I remember the frantic search for anything on the plane the .45 hole could be blamed on. Something else down the rabbit hole.

Wasn’t that the crash site that was caused by changing the beacons so that the plane flew into a mountain thinking it was heading toward the runway…& the maintenance worker willing to give info “killed himself” conveniently with a rifle shot to his own chest.

I showed a pared down text file of many of the Clinton associated deaths to one of my son’s during the 2016 election cycle & he was pissed that someone as corrupt as Hillary was a “legitimate” candidate for any political party.
