Genetic engineering concerns me.
We can “play god” all we want, but no matter what we do in the physical realm, we cannot assign/guarantee the presence of a soul. Is a soul present JUST BECAUSE a human being is physically present? If we fiddle around with the building blocks (as in genetic engineering) does the soul stay the same, or does it change?
If we manufacture a baby entirely [e.g., cloning] does a soul just appear, like part of the package deal?
We were made “in the image of God”, but can WE make OTHERS in the image of God?

It’s the issue of the soul that concerns me, not the physical side. Different issue altogether, IMO.

I avoided that topic as the issue of who or what gets a soul is so far out of my ken as to be some kind of math. It brings up questions such as do children conceived in vitro have souls and if not why not? If we somehow manage to create parthenogenesis in humans will the offspring gave souls? And then we get into souls in animals, especially the great apes who share about 98.8% of our DNA?
Only the soul’s issuing authority can answer that, in the meantime I’m just trying to dust off mine.

You list many of the same questions that I have, czar. But I am unable to avoid thinking about them–I don’t want to avoid thinking about them. Theology is my avocation (possibly more than that). These issues are of the utmost importance, and there is value to thinking and discussing them. They are not “above our pay grade” [h/t some witless fool–not you, of course].

I had a friend when I was a teenager, a little frail old man who became my companion through happenstance, he was 88 and we would go to the mall and walk and sit and watch people. He had seen combat, he was a tough old egg but also sweet and would never hurt a flea. He loved to buy Maurice Cookies and give them to people.
But…
just to make me laugh hew would sometimes times say to me as a large muscular man walked by (I was all of 104 pounds and 5′ 4″) “I never liked him, let’s go kick his ass.” it made me laugh every time, your comment reminded me of those days.

I used to work with this older guy, straight up farm guy who just had a lot of sense. He was the warehouse manager, and occasionally he’s pass through the office and listen to some of the guys talking trash. His saying was “Let’s you and them fight.” 😀

I’m standing very firmly in the Catholic teaching corner on this one. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Otherwise, it’s exactly like czar said, you have to question everything.

I believe we were meant to question, meant to evolve spiritually and physically or else we’d have been made as angels. The teaching is that they were created as complete beings, there was no physical, spiritual or other evolution for them…though there was that whole rebellion thing.
I have no problem fitting evolution in with Genesis, none at all. Adam and Eve left the garden without having partaken of the fruit so they didn’t get God’s knowledge meaning they were and their descendants would remain questioning and curious.

Going back to bruised knuckle days in Catholic school…exactly when did Gid give Adam his soul? Genesis talks about God breathing the breath of life into Adam and his becoming a living soul…but not getting one. We go over to Genesis 7:15 and we have a pair of all cretures which had the breath of life (note animals and not plants which were thought not to breathe) in them.
Now there were no fewer than 22 different translations/interpretations of that verse when I looked it up, some quite different from each other. Which one am I supposed to accept without question? Am I to suppose that in all of the translations from Ancient Aramaic or Hebrew or Greek that none of the translators made a mistake, either intentional or not? More bruised knuckles.

First, throw out all the versions that have a ™ or a ©. Those versions have been changed enough to warrant trademarks and copyrights. I could publish my own version of Rowling’s Harry Potter books, too, and get a copyright… if I changed the text enough to make it unique.

Then there were the redefinitions by activist popes (hello Borgias) and there’s always the King James revision. Go further back and the people who translated the manuscripts from their ancient languages made some subjective, or accidental, changes too, e.g. the Sixth Commandment.
Back to that ‘ask questions’ thing.

We’re still using His building blocks, just assembling them in a different factory setting. One day we may be able to assemble DNA from base chemicals and get it to work but…see golem.

I don’t believe that God gave us permission to totally disassemble and reassemble His “building blocks”. As a poor/limited example, would any classical painting still be the work of the original artist if we ground it up, reconstituted the paint, and remade it following a guideline? Would it still have the same value?
The brains He gave us need to be used to determine just how far we may go in the dissassembly/reassembly endeavor, and finding the point beyond which we MAY NOT go.

Hate to sound like a lawyer but He didn’t say we couldn’t either. To me it comes back to that area I’d rather not visit of ‘divine mystery’ and ‘leap of faith’, but we got that ‘free will’. We have the ability to go as far as we can and accept the consequences…you pays your nickel and you takes your chances.
We may be able to come close but the made can’t exceed the maker. We have the free will and ability to destroy ourselves, something we do in a small way many days. Issues of divine omniscience aside I believe we were given the ability act god-like and bear the consequences. We were not created perfect, we were knowingly created flawed and I’m sure He had His reasons.

i.e., “everything which is not forbidden is allowed” ? Although a cornerstone of English law, I am uncomfortable with a wholesale application of that viewpoint to God’s law.
Creation itself is the first and primary of God’s actions in time. Creation, especially of life, is part of who God IS. Nothing and no one else in space or time has ever created life. No life was created apart from God. Just because His word does not say otherwise–specifically–can we step into that primary identity and be co-participants in creation/re-creation? That would make us equal to God. And THAT comes quite close to something that IS in God’s law: “I am the LORD your God…You shall have no other gods before me.” No other gods–which includes ourselves.

Nulla poena sine lege…ain’t seeing it as a sin anywhere and I’m sure that if God gets upset at scientists trying to replicate his ceation of humanity He’s more than capable of letting us know. So far science has been having a good, and in many cases productive, time tinkering with DNA and so far no Mosaic retributions. We can’t be sure He didn’t want us to discover how His universe and everything in it operates and is constructed, might just be a test. Can we work out His secrets and still retain our humanity?

Regarding my post above, Carly Simon, I’m convinced, is genetically engineered. She has at least twice as many teeth as the average human. I don’t know how else it’s possible. I think she shares DNA with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. When we were smoking ganja in our early 20s, Carly Simon’ing was a slang term for how incredibly high we were, and the size of our smile. Seriously, she has too many teeth. At some point, you have enough teeth.

I’m offa breakfast, onta supper. Paul Prudhomme’s meatloaf tonite, onlybthing that could make it better is if it weren’t raining and I could grill it. Great recipe, been using it for many years, it’s my go-to.
For those who don’t like the hot, just omit the hot. I also don’t use the condensed milk sometimes, tonite I’m subbing a mix of real buttermilk and sour cream. Also using red peppers out of the garden instead of green bell.

Some pretty depressing posts in the comment section of Truth in Government. Actually, there are very few comment sections worth reading anymore if you don’t want to work overtime on keeping your spirits up, including CTH, because of unhelpful negativity. Negativity against the opposition=fine, OK by me, love to do it myself; negativity against the President and his decisions and/or cabinet choices=not so much.

Unfortunately I have stopped reading most of the comment section except the ones here. Most have turned into nothing but gossip columns and false articles. I am getting a lot more done around the house though. I was glued to my computer for two years watching Mr. Trump become President Trump. I knew he would win the minute he came down the elevator and I did not want to miss history being made. Now, I just catch the main stories and leave the rest up to our President and God.

Reminds me of another almost forgotten post-Katrina story.
As the residents were trickling back in the FEMA folks were heaving money at contractors to put those blue tarps on roofs. Some contractors were reportedly receiving some $60 per man hour to get them up, paying workers $30 or more an hour.
There were tons of ‘Mexicans’ in town, they had camps set up over by City Park and at dead malls in the East. They were working some 12 to 16 hours a day and raking in the cash…actually just about anyone who wanted a job could get one as there was more work than workers. Even the first fast food shops to open on the untouched Westbank were paying workers $10 to $15 an hour plus sign on bonuses paid over six or more months (many reneged on them).
Early on comes a well known black rabble rouser with a bus full of what was portrayed as native NOLA black workers looking for work but denied work as the contractors were hiring ‘out of towners’. Oh well, native New Orleanians denied work as evil contractors were hiring illegal Spanish soeakers!? Time for an inquisitive local station to investigate….oops.
Seems that about one of the bus’s riders was a local and when the riders saw that the work consisted of spending some twelve hours a day on a roof swinging a hammer in the searing, blazing sun and being on production….wellllllll let’s say that if a majority of the riders had taken the jobs another report would have been forthcoming. The town was largely rebuilt by Latinos busting their butts cleaning and securing the mess. That’s lost to the rehistorying process too.

It’s pretty obvious that these men and women of no principles cast their vote in defiance of President Trump and the American people. Each one would have been perfectly happy to have Hillary as president and bask in her glory.
The brain deterioration of John McCain is evidenced in the manner he cast his vote. He seemed to pause in order to get more attention, almost spat out the “NO” in the way a defiant four-year-old would do, and then walked away with a “so there!” attitude. We are seeing the true McCain, the one he showed in private or without cameras being present but now because of his increasing mental incapacitation cannot control. Sad for us all.
We knew President Trump’s tenure would have ugly opposition, but did any of us really think it would be this bad or sustained or encouraged and the disloyalty to conservative principles/President Trump’s agenda so severe?

I hear he said something to Politico correspondents just before his vote, like “watch the show”, and afterwards said, “Let’s see Donald make America great again now!”, which was reported by staffers.

I could have sworn he spoke the word “no” but the article indicates he “gestured his hand downward to vote ‘no’.” only. There again…a defiant, childish gesture. Frankly, there is a minority of adults in the entire Senate…majority are spoiled brats deeply in need of a spanking.

Good Morning Stellarites, I just wanted to let you all know that I’ve posted a couple of updates on my son Josiah’s post-surgery status over on the CTH prayer request page 9 (I tried to post the link here but it wouldn’t let me, perhaps because I thought I was posting on today’s forum when I was actually on Thursday’s)…
Overall Josiah is doing pretty well but still faces a number of challenges. Dealing with a catheter at home as an adult is a pretty steep learning curve for all of us. Last time he came home with a catheter he was still wearing diapers so it wasn’t Too different from regular days; obviously that’s not at all the way it is now…
Anyway we have appreciated your prayers & encouragement as we’ve been walking this most recent path of medical upheaval. Thank you for remembering Josiah & I to the Lord as our situation comes to mind. May the Lord Bless You ALL & encourage you in your journeys too. I hope to catch up on what’s happening in these general discussion forums after getting some more rest…for I do love coming alongside for the ride here. Thank you all. I’m sure God helped somehow. The night went smoothly, but not with the inner turmoil. And it’s still residual. I hope I wake up happier than I am now, to go do brunch at 0730.

F.E.A.R. = Future Events Appearing Real
we cannot know what is going to happen in the future. we are in charge of our selves in the present. when we anticipate bad behavior on others in the future…we set ourselves up for a resentment, and we become defensive and potentially cause things to happen to ourselves that otherwise would not occur possibly.
Our task is to stay Centered on Our Reality, and not drift into future projections, even when we have past history that we use to forecast future events…they are not Real, but exist in our mind.
As such, we allow the person we resent to own our minds, spirit, and behavior…they have no idea about our pain, as they are not part of it. The only relief is to choose for ourselves what we wish to believe and seek the positive in everyone until we reach that point in time where our Fear will either be proven right, or we will discover we wasted our precious life moments thinking in the Virtual Future of our HEAD.

I did ask him that, as I sat on a bucket outside, smoking a cigarette before work. That and “Are you going to be Jeckyll or Hyde tonight?”
I stuck it out and didn’t leave, but it was a difficult night for me, emotionally.
He didn’t say anything, just walked back inside. He didn’t say much to me tonight other than that which was business-related. I hope what I asked him hit him like a fist to the gut.
