Loads of fun and so much nostalgia. A French artist made it, imagining what Win93 would have looked like had it been released in 1993 instead of 1995.

A stupid, great waste of time to explore. Treat it like you would Win95 because everything on it works — well, at least as well as everything “worked” back in the 90s. A work of genius.

If I can interpret what I’ve seen over the years (tough call being a white, conservative, rural-dwelling male) the globalist elites have been trying to ‘stabilize’ the Third World for decades through cultural osmosis, resettling thousands of people from the North African belt into Europe.
Theory was that by exposing these uneducated, unmotivated and potentially dangerous males into civilized countries they’d somehow absorb the work ethic and civilized ways of the host culture. The fear that hundreds of thousands of unemployed feral males could spark regional violence and destabilize large parts of the 3rd World gave them the brilliant idea that spreading them to the fertile European, and now US, fields would somehow improve the economies and create a stable environment. Geez, maybe importing cutworms and aphids to my garden will improve yields?!
The UN was pushing the Open Borders concept decades ago, workers and their families should be allowed to move wherever they wanted, whenever they wanted without those pesky national immigration policies getting in the way. Of course the mass movement of large groups of people internationally would mean the need for a transnational entity like…oh, let’s say….the UN to start taking over international governance to ensure the process went smoothly and without parochial biases, but that would be worked out later, nothing tonsee here, just move along.
To me the reason the 1st World is the 1st World is because of its cultural ethics, had the 3rd World the means to be 1st, or even 2nd World, it would have done so. The BS excuses that the evil West has stolen their whatever, leaving them destitute and impoverished, actively oppressed them, refuses to help develop them are more in the line of excuses. To paraphrase Calvera in The Magnificent Seven, ‘if they didn’t want to be sheep they wouldn’t remain sheep’. Why not just come to Europe and the US where guilt-dotted progs will take care of them. Oh yeah, and why not bite that hand that feeds them too? If you want to come here apply, and have the education, speak the language and have a job lined up.

Amazing news…there is such a thing as a Pickle-tini. Sadly, I think I’m all in on that one! (Perhaps because it looks like an Lburg lemonade.)

I am living with my 88 year old mother, assisting her as she gets through some health crises. She lives on the water and the house has a porch out front where I drink coffee in the morning. This morning, for the second time in a week, I saw mother and baby dolphins. It’s surprising how big the mamas are. At the same time I saw hummingbirds on the feeders and a great blue heron on the yard.

I shake my head with wonder and gratitude every day.

    • And if you are ever in Mackinac City, at “the Tip of the Mitt” ,you can eat at a local pizzeria, called Mamma’s (I think–it’s on that main tourist strip perpendicular to the Lake Huron views). They have a free Museum on the second floor that chronicles much of the history of the building of the Big Mac Bridge.

My mom remembers Summers at her parents’ UP (Upper Peninsula) Cottage where they had to take the ferry across the Straits of Mackinac, before the bridge was built. In the Museum they feature a huge photo from like the 1920s showing the line of Model T looking cars stretching back for 5 miles waiting for the ferry to cross into the UP for Deer Hunting Season. Gotta Hunt!

Navigating the swamp….Oct 2016 I find that I’m eligible for a VA disability rating based on combat service. The disability is boilerplate, the rule says that if you were in Vietnam, even for one day and are diagnosed with Type II diabetes you are AUTOMATICALLY entitled to the disability and an added disability rating for any secondary conditions which are listed in the ruling. Sounds clear, eh?
So I go to my two specialists and have them fill out the ‘fill n the blanks’ forms specifically for these two conditions, fill out the convoluted VA Form and…oops, there’s a grammatical question in the form…it calls for copies of ALL of my DD 214s, not just the one specific to my condition so I contact the VA help’ line – 3 agents and 4 different answers. All they agree on is that it has to be a certified copy. Not having a certified copy of a document dating back to early 1969 I ask if they can just go to the VA’s medical section that has all of my 241s and even pay records for some periods I didn’t receive a 214. Nope, they don’t talk to the medical section. How about talking to NPRC and get them to send a copy electronically, that would be official. Nope, they don’t talk to NPRC. Follows a 5 week delay while I file forms and get official copies from NPRC.
NPRC issued o-fishul 214 arrives, I file paperwork. About a month after I file I call the VA and see if they have an expected date for my disability determination…should be easy as it’s guaranteed by regulation, all IO have to do is ask and show I was in Vietnam, they have it all. Nope, I’m told, it goes into the ‘as it comes in; hopper where it’s farmed out…estimated determination date is sometime in December of 2017. I’m right on there with more exotic and action-heavy cases, no triage, no nothing.
Off to the Senator’s office who makes a WTFO inquiry. On 10 July the notification that my disability has been approved arrives on his desk but my copy with all of the information I need, allegedly generated on the same day the Senator’s notification was, still isn’t here but the VA will not generate a new copy until 10 working days has gone by from their first generation’
Now, as I’m retired from the military the amount of my disability award will be deducted, dollar for dollar, from my military pay. As the disability is combat related I will get it back….after I file more forms. needs yet another form, this one accompanied
Enter the second agency, the USAF office that certifies my disability is combat related. They have their own form and it has to be accompanied by a copy of the same 214 that the VA has, doesn’t have to be certified, a copy of my Army retirement orders and copies of all the VA paperwork approving my disability. This office also doesn’t talk with anyone in the DoD who has the paperwork they need so luckily I had a spare 214 and went online to my Army personnel files that, 10 years after I retired, are still on line and show me as eligible for combat zone deployment. You might have made the connection, if your eyes stopped rolling, that the VA paperwork they asked for ALREADY certifies my being in Vietnam which in turn automatically makes it combat related. Agency number two just recertifies what the VA already certified.
Enter agency number three…DFAS, the agency that pays the military retired and active. The VA notifies them that I’ve received a disability and DFAS will deduct that dollar-for-dollar amount from my retirement pay for a net gain of zero. The disability is combat related according to the VA but DFAS won’t accept that judgement, only the notification from AF agency number two will suffice. Once agency two rubber stamps the VA’s determination DFAS will give me the amount they’ve deducted back.
Now, get this. Each month I will get three checks from DFAS: check number one will be my regular military retirement pay MINUS the disability amount. Check number two will be the disability amount and check number three will be the amount of the disability they are still deducting from my retirement pay but also returning to me.
How the **** are you gonna drain a swamp like this?

Thing is that I have the wherewithal to navigate this mess. I have the time, am not desperate for the money and know the system. Imagine some young vet who loses a limb in a combat zone, gets that medical retirement and has to live off of what he gets in retirement before he gets his complete entitlement. If he has a family the problems are multiplied.
Three agencies, all dealing with the same issues, duplicating tasks and throwing roadblocks into the paths of vets they are hired to support.
These agencies are created not to support vets, they’re self-licking ice cream cones designed to spread the jobs as thinly as possible and create bureaucratic domains for Federal employees to exploit for their own benefits. Turn them all over to a competent businessman to run like a business instead of a bureaucratic honeypot and see how they hum. Feds took the Federal TSP retirement program away from the Fed overlords and gave it to a private company and almost overnight it moved from the 18th to the 21st century.

    • Like our prior battles with Special Education (in no way equivalent to the magnitude of the abuses you’ve endured) it would appear that part of the inefficiency of the bureaucracy exists to frustrate one to the place of giving up…or alternatively piss one off to the degree that they either stroke out of have a heart attack & thereby eliminate the “problem” for the government.

What they Don’t exist for is to help you, to competently do their job, or to even remotely adhere to the law. I used to quote chapter & verse of the law to education overlords & they’d basically shrug & “say” “Make us” (comply)…etc.

True dat, they may start out with good intentions but in short order bureaucratic creep sets in. It becomes a battle for fiscal and influential resources, self-promotion and pure power.
For many years Louisiana had a state run system for mentally developmentally disabled children and adults and Czarina was in charge of quality assurance for the one that housed the most mentally disabled. She and the staff dragged it back fromk being under Federal control and kept it Fed-free for many years, passing every governmental and NGO inspection thrown at it. State of Louisiana rewarded their efforts by selling off its entire DD system to largely politically-connected contractors who make a tidy profit off of the client’s Social Security and the supplemental funds the state chips in. State has a smaller pool of dedicated to care (same pay, less work), covilian contractors get a nice profit and who knows what goes on under the political table. Only ones steamrollered are the clients.

        • Sounds like the same tune different band.

My special needs son recently “graduated” from High School but still can’t do 3rd grade math. Michigan provides special education supports through age 26…but since he has a diploma he apparently can’t access these programs & services.

So last month we were finally going to bite the bullet & visit the disabled adult employment training center…had the date set & everything. Son’s DD case manager calls to say the law has changed & those facilities only take age 26+ now–my son is 21.

Looks like the system decided to squeeze out the “higher functioning” disabled…as in capable of getting a “diploma” but still needing significant supports, etc. Once again the high functioning autistic get left behind…

I wrote in detail about our battles with Special Education at both blogs I write & especially at this particular posting where I lay out much of the abuses we encountered when attempting to use Due Process as a last resort to address our son’s needs.

Commenting on “Only the Rich will Have Rights” Article

I’m still trying to regroup from that whole ordeal & come to grips with what “our” attorney told us “there’s nothing you can do for your son…but I’d really love to see you advocate” on other kids’ behalf. Sigh…

I can imagine, I’ve posted about the Wagnerian saga I went thru getting my ADHD grandson the services he was entitled to in school. They refused the evaluation provided by an ADHD specialist at a major hospital as the law allows them to use their own inhouse ‘expert’ to determine if a student has ADHD…the name of a lawyer and a POC at the Federal education bureaucracy ensured a ‘fair’ evaluation.
If you ain’t pushy and persistent you get ground into the dust while the school bureaucrats redistribute the funds given to them for special ed.

If we’d have had money we would have paid for services & “sued” for reimbursement…but that was not our lot.

I’ll find you the sites I used, posts were largely ‘me against them’ rants like my VA ones, venting the karma that’s come back to sit on this retired bureaucrat.
Thing is you have to be assertive without being confrontational. As you probably have seen bureaucrats in the school system who do not want to deal with you will try to,push you to the point where you overreact, allowing them to change the narrative from your trying to get thecservices you’re entitled to to your being an irrational and possibly physical threat to the staff. That allows them to shade the process sgainst you.
I had solutions they wouldn’t like in hand. I found a sympathetic ear at the regionalUS DoE who, especially after a conversation about the Mississippi school system. She gave me her desk phone number and said call if they gave me the runaround.
I also haunted the ADHD sites online. They have condensed the laws and regs into useable form and offernlots of advise and tips. You can grow old hunting up the info you can find on these sites in a far more digestible form.
My ace was and still is Czarina. She’d been out of the DD advocacy business for ten years when this popped up but the pure basics are the same. She also has a professional attitude probably developed by being a wrangler in the Colosseum in a previous life. If you can find someone like this, and advocacy groups in your area should have one, take this person to any you/school meetings.
Always take notes, record ( secretly if the need be) as you CANNOT rely on the school to provide an adaquate (OK, honest) record of the meeting. You need an accurate record to refute what may be a self serving version they do for themselves.
This is probably all too familiar to you already, it’s the same process you crash into for and spec ed services in a system that wants to use the limited spec ed money for other things, basic difference is the regulatory cites. The schools really don’t want to divert scarce resources from mainline to mainstreamed students and you have to fight them tooth and nail.
