  3. Hi, I’m pretty new around here but I wanted to share a “good report” about my son. Some of you have visited his new blog, JosiahsFreakShow.wordpress.com at the urging of Menagerie at the Conservative Tree House.

We’ve had a busy couple of days (following an extended 4th of July stay in Northern Michigan) seeing a surgical pre-op clinic Monday & “today” (actually Tuesday, but it never “feels” like it’s a new day until I actually/eventually sleep!) at the Liver Transplant Clinic AND the Brain Tumor Clinic. That’s a lot to process, even for us.

Anyway, the upshot is that there is no apparent (re)growth of his Brain Tumor since it’s removal back in 2010…and for the first time he will be allowed to go for FOUR Years before another Brain MRI & return to the Pituitary Clinic!

He is also almost exactly 4 years post-Liver Transplant now & looks like he may be able to begin the weaning off of anti-rejection meds following a (relatively minor, though 18th overall) surgery planned for later this month! This is almost a year sooner than they’d previously stated protocols would allow such attempted medication weaning–perhaps a sign of how well he’d doing…

These are all huge praise reports from our standpoint…& my son is quite relieved since he had been “gearing up with the Lord” to prepare for the possibility of more “bad news” & medical challenges, especially in the Neurosurgery arena. We are so thankful for good reports.

I wrote up many details about these visits, & previously about many medical & special education challenges for/about Josiah, at this blog, if anyone is interested in that type of material…

    http://www.carepages.com/carepages/JournalingForTheJazzman

There are also details about our ongoing & historical journey, especially as relates to managing Josiah’s needs, at my wordpress blog here

    SpecialConnections.wordpress.com

Some people have been blessed and encouraged by our experiences & faith-affirming approaches to the complex & difficult medical & advocacy battles we’ve faced…so all those links are by way of an FYI, if they might be beneficial, inspiring, or encouraging to others.

God Bless You ALL…& God Bless America (& restore Her to founding principles & values!)

(I wanted to post a photo of Josiah here, but don’t know how to do that…so here is a link to the photo I’d wanted to share, fyi)

    • PS I really only began the wordpress blog as a form of an outlet to cope with the massive abuse/betrayal of the special education system (not that I in any way believe in the Nanny State)…in attempting to assert, protect, and redress issues related to my special needs son’s “rights” “guaranteed & protected” in Special Education law! I was/am an isolated parent dealing with extremely complex issues over many years who took advocacy “training” from WrightsLaw.com to heart & attempted to put it into practice in defense of my son…anyway some perspective on that whole debacle can be gained at this early blog posting…& the inspirational article cited is also well worth the read for anyone who struggles in these arenas…

Happy to have you here Valerie! Yes, Menagerie shared your son’s blog with us here and he sounds like a wonderful young man. My friend adopted a little girl she has been diagnosed with fatal alcohol syndrome and autism. The very early years were extremely rough and getting her in the right programs and then finding a teacher who saw her as a person is a constant battle. They have been blessed with some very very good souls who are helping her to become a lovely young girl. She struggles everyday but at least for now part of the struggle isn’t the people who are in her daily life who are part of the system.

The system itself is still a mess as I’m sure you know far better than me the system is set up to fail our children and reward the people at the top regardless of than incompetence and lack of compassion.

      • Thanks for welcoming me. My son is an incredibly fascinating, complex, & unique person that one of my other kids once described as “the heart of our home”. Unlike your friend, we became an autism family by blood…& had we had the choice at the beginning we, in our human weakness, would likely have screamed “Pass!” I have tremendous admiration for & am extremely humbled by those who Choose to step up to the plate for a game where the rules, players, & tools are in constant flux! When we look back on the tortuous journey thus far & contemplate “what ifs” basically no one in our immediate family wishes that we didn’t have Josiah or that we hadn’t stumbled & crawled along those treacherous rocky pathways–they brought us all to the place where we are now!

I just recently met a woman with a biological son with autism and an adopted child, age 2, who was born drug addicted to a drug addicted mother. She and her husband have also fostered and even adopted other kids…& she’s more than a decade younger than me. We had wanted to adopt but felt so overwhelmed with our special needs (behavioral & medical) & financial inadequacies we never did do so (at least yet)…for years I used to wander Michigan’s adoption website looking for sibling groups that might be compatible with our kids….but not yet. My mom was adopted though, & we’ve been touched historically, though more obliquely, by adoption there & on my husband’s side.

I think one of the biggest factors in Josiah’s growth & (relative) maturity as a person is his deeply genuine & abiding personal relationship with our Lord. How many 21 year olds do any of us know who regularly spend hours worshiping the Lord??? His relationship with the Lord & our parental reliance upon & reinforcement of it have been keys to his ability to overcome many challenges. For instance when he’s been extremely out of control (emotionally, behaviorally, vocally) we would send him off to a “time out” to reduce sensory input (& give the rest of us reprieve) & when he was calmer we’d insist that he spend time with the Lord & get to the place where he was ready to forgive &/or apologize &/or explain, etc. In addition to techniques & medications I/we would remind him that Self Control was a Fruit of the Spirit & that the Lord would help him manage that area in his life, even if he might always have challenges there due to autism, etc. His relationship with Christ has probably been the greatest contributor to healing & growth in those very challenging autism domains…& it’s still not a picnic, but much better now that he is a young man & better able to verbalize than when he was younger & “acting out”…

I absolutely agree with your last paragraph. We were blessed during Josiah’s High School Years to have some Para-Professional staffing involved with him at school. Some of these people came to genuinely love him & were almost parental-style friends & supports to him. A former staff person, who no longer works in the education system, keeps in occasional touch electronically with him & she is such a blessing still! Thankfully we and your friends have experienced some helpful & supportive people periodically–How I wish they outnumbered the other sort who seem to predominate!

        • Whoops…I meant to append regarding Autism…It does get better…eventually…or maybe we just learn how better to cope &/or drop our expectations (even below zero) so we can endure!

I’ve mentioned elsewhere that our family, & Josiah especially, use Movie Quoting as a shorthand form of communication. One of our latest favorites comes from the TV show Malcolm in the Middle, & it’s our new best descriptor of life within our family…

“I expect nothing and still I’m disappointed” & we always crack up at the truth of that!

          Good morning!

Sorry I should have been more clear, my friend adopted an infant girl, we didn’t know anything of her problems at the time. But even through tremendous challenges she has become the heart of the family as has Josiah. There were truly many heartbreaking and scary moments but through God and loving human persistence (among the tears and trials) things are more peaceful and on a hopeful path.

They are a Christ centered family also which is their saving grace.

They also had to fight to get her the proper help before the diagnosis’ and after and we know that their getting phenomenal help is by far the exception and the result of her mothers dogged pursuit of holding everyones feet to the fire. Unfortunately most of these children get shuttled around in the school system even with parents that are fully engaged in trying to get the best for their children. The system is big, scary and powerful and often makes parents feel if they push for something better that their child will be the one to suffer the consequences. Sickening.

That said there are many dedicated individuals in the system.Thank God for them!

I have 3 girls all grown (well one is 18) and she is off to college this year. So I will be an empty nester other than my dogs 😊.

          • Your friend still stepped up to the plate with adoption, taking on another’s potential genetic challenges vs ones that might seem more familiar to your own, because your bio kid carries your own DNA–they just “happened” to get the Autism Bonus.

I still have A Lot of baggage because of the school system abuses, since 2001…& am sort of working through it…

Josiah was found to be PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified AKA “Atypical Autism”) while a pre-schooler. However, because he also had so many medically based needs & extreme ADHD (school personnel were “illegally” pressuring us to medicate him, etc) autism wasn’t ever part of his special ed labeling (a major source of tension). However, for our family the Autism diagnosis was a huge relief, as in “ah ha” that “explains” a lot of things…

He’s obviously embraced autism as an identifier, given his blog’s subheading “Autistic & Passionate Christian”. I’m not a big fan of “labels” per se, but sometimes a term can be a shorthand way to encompass a buttload of issues…

As far as the system goes, I’m still fairly furious about what was done to us & what is continuing to be done to others. At some point I hope that God can find a way to use us & our voices to effect some positive change in that arena (though it’s likely just yet another scenario of beating my own head against a brick wall…& eventually the skull will crack & what “brains” are left will spill out)…

Josiah’s main doctor said that she believes that it’s the High Functioning Autistic Kids who are really not getting their needs met by the school system. It’s actually infuriating since this population is seemingly growing, its needs & issues are myriad, just caring for such kids can stretch families to the limit, the Higher Functioning end of the Spectrum likely represents those that have a greater chance of more overtly “contributing to society”, these kids have huge amounts of untapped & unusual skill sets–they can be offering society key strengths surpassing many of us seemingly “regular” people.

OK, tripping down off my soapbox now.

Good luck & blessings on the college front. Our youngest is 19 & just completed her Freshman year. However our situation means our kids are commuting to school…so no empty nest, just extra, wonderful, chaos!

It is a crime that many of them would like it if children, little human beings, were all medicated into quiet submission.

but sometimes a term can be a shorthand way to encompass a buttload of issues…

Agreed. My friends daughter has many issues, many of them fall under the umbrella of autism.

I applaud your fight for Josiah and other children, I know it is not an easy path and I know from my friend how frustrating it can be. Another friend has a daughter who has two autistic sons, the challenge proved too much for her and her husband and they ended up divorced (there is of course more to the story than two autistic children) .Now the daughter is left alone (father decided the whole family thing was too much trouble) to battle the bureaucracy and the demand for medicate, medicate, medicate.

Blessings and thank you. Can you post a link to Josiah’s blog? I know Menagerie posted it but I don’t know on which thread.

              Thanks!

              • Thanks for the kudos. It’s a very strange place to arrive at & a convoluted reluctant path for some (like me) to have to massively advocate for your child. Not a chosen path here but ultimately a necessity since so often the “experts” don’t really know what they’re talking about when they prognosticate on these complex kids…truly only God knows…

So sorry about your friend’s daughter’s divorce & abandonment of the family by the husband/father. Years back, like 2 decades ago, when the system provided “counseling” to help us/me cope with the overwhelming stress of the special needs situation we were in (& I honestly had no real frame of reference to know whether I had “legit” issues or was just whining about the hand we’d been dealt)…anyway this counselor in my home basically minimized my concerns/issues saying I didn’t know how good I had it since “most” dads of special needs kids bailed on their family, what an indictment of a whole subset of men.

My husband has gone through his own personal crucible battling many things within himself & our family life as he surrenders to the Lord and daily lays down his life for all of us in Christ-like/centered fashion, and much/most of that crucible was related to the special needs issues & fallout. He had a great model of sacrificial love in his step-father giving mightily to his mother during her last illness, a lingering cancer ridden demise…

I truly believe so many, perhaps most, of the major ills of society would be diminished/removed if men collectively lived as God desires (sex only within marriage, Christ-like laying down of his life for his wife/family, loving his wife as he loves himself, being a loving surrendered to God leader in his family, etc)…& of course the counterpoint to that would be women living in a biblicaly-based manner too.

Josiah has 2 blogs, his more recent one that Menagerie had posted before is
                JosiahsFreakShow.wordpress.com

He also has been writing for a while at
                JosiahTheOvercomer.carepages.com

I’ve been writing mostly about his needs at JournalingForTheJazzman.carepages.com since roughly when we got the near simultaneous diagnoses of Brain Tumor & Liver Masses/Tumors, Thanksgiving 2009. That Jazzman blog also got some “historical emails” posted that chronicle aspects of special education battles & other prayer requests going back to underpin various components of what was happening in addition to dealing with Brain Tumor & eventual Liver Transplant.

His Carepages blog contains a lot of his praises to the Lord, some patriotic declarations, and more recently his own version of Psalms, The Book of Josiah!

                  Absolutely love it!

I will keep all of you in my prayers.

I think it is hard for parents to accept that their children’s lives are out of their hands. We want to control and fix and when your child has special needs you learn much sooner that bubble wrapping them is impossible.

I think it is harder for fathers as it is their role to protect. I am complimenting your husband not making excuses for the weak self interested men who do abandon their families. And leaving families isn’t exclusive to men but that doesn’t fit the politically correct narrative does it. SMH at the world.

                  • SMH? I’m still woefully out of touch…

God may have mercied my husband & our family in a strange way for the first nearly 3 months of Josiah’s life we spent apart. The boys & I were downstate, living with my parents &/or in the hospital, while my husband was working in Gaylord & commuting to Dearborn on weekends to be with his family.

We also did that for random weeks at a time where we’d go to my parents home on a weekend & the boys & I would stay there during the week while I took Josiah to various specialist appointments…then we’d all return Up North to our then home at the end of the following weekend.

Before the twins were a year old my husband ended up working/looking for work while staying with my parents downstate commuting to be with us on weekends, while the boys & I stayed at our Gaylord home as we needed to sell it For Sale By Owner to get as much funding as possible to facilitate our complete move downstate. It took us about a year to complete that sale & we had to move in 2 parts because the home we bought wasn’t available when promised…& I was pregnant with our daughter then–sigh.

Those periods of separation kept some of the major upheaval & chaos of the infancy/toddler years less in my husband’s face than had we been consistently living in the same place. Those were very difficult & overwhelming days & I’ve actually (kind of) blocked out a lot of the details & most of the emotions (one of my major coping strategies) of those times.

We were written up in the Gaylord paper in that time frame here, and some of what is said there seems near prophetic given where Josiah is now! We had been told he’d never walk or talk and that he’d never read nor write…so his blogs, his existence, & his major overcoming of obstacles are major triumphs!

                    To God Be The Glory!!!

That Newspaper article from back when Michael & I and the Boys lived in Gaylord is here, on pages 1, 4, & 5:

You and your husband both always put God and family first and you made the sacrifices necessary to not inly survive but to become an exceptional testament to God’s enduring love!

Thank God for your family who helped you to make what could have been unbearable possible.

And yes I do think we block out certain memories or color them in on order to survive, it is never good or positive to dwell in the recesses of life.

Thank you for sharing the beauty and success of your life and Josiah’s triumphs.

I just finished reading the newspaper article with tears in my eyes! What a testament you are to God’s enduring love the the capacity of the human soul to abandon itself in God. I am so happy that Josiah has survived and that he has a beautiful life.

“We can’t handle tomorrow’s problems, or even this afternoon’s. We can only handle right now.”

Amen. One moment at a time. The now is temporary and can be survived.

Your story brought to mind Gary Allan’s song “Life Ain’t Always Beautiful” I choose that song as a guide to life. His wife died by suicide, they had 6 children, 3 were biologically hers, 3 were biologically his, after his wife Angela’s death the grandparents of Angela’s children took them from Gary even though he loved them as his own.

In spite of every trial thrown at us there is deep abiding beauty in life. In every atom, in the sunlight on our face, in the bluest of skies and the heaviest of rain, is the thundering and the whispering of Love.

I believe that old hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul”, was penned by a man who watched most/all of his family drown following a shipwreck at sea. It is only by God’s amazing grace that someone can create such soul stirring beauty out of those Sea Billow Sorrows!

Thank you for sharing that video, I didn’t know that song…very moving & true!

Just rode down to the pier. Raincoat on this time. One vehicle in the parking lot, parked, with it’s headlights on. Terrible. I rode over to them to ask if they could please stop that.

It happened to be two people in a SUV from some TV station in Kalamazoo called Channel 3 or something. I showed the guy in back, sitting inside the tailgate, with a presumably multi-thousand dollar camera, taking probably 120-frames-per-second 4K video, aiming at the lighthouses.

I showed him my Lightning Camera app, and a few shots, and he was astounded. I told him, as I am wont to do, that I don’t watch TV, ever — no offense — I watch lightning. I don’t know if these two are TV personalities or whatever, and I don’t care. They’re people taking pics of lightning at 4 AM, and that’s cool. Having their headlights on, facing East, is just bad form, though. Stop it!

Well, well, well. It wasn’t true that somebody else paid. NY did pay for his trip under false pretenses IMO.

‘SF Transit: Releasing Robbery Surveillance Videos Would Be ‘Racially Insensitive’
“It would create a racial bias in the riders against minorities on the trains.”’

Red State’s Kira Davis, whom you may remember from her video for TruthRevolt here, reports that the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) authorities are withholding surveillance videos of the following violent robberies committed over the last three months:
    April 22: Forty to sixty kids boarded a train at the Coliseum stop and robbed seven passengers, beating up two;
June 28: A group of four kids assaulted a passenger and made off with a cell phone at Dublin; and
June 30: A woman on a train with about a dozen teenagers had her phone snatched by one them before the group got off at the Coliseum stop. Thankfully, a good Samaritan was on hand to retrieve the phone.

      “kids”, “teenagers”, “youths”.

The MSM doesn’t realize that most Americans have cracked their code.

Most of these are none of the above words, usually, but young adults instead. It’s astounding how unbelievably Soviet Union our press has become.

All cowardice, all the time, afraid of their own Party. Always walking on eggshells.

I had a good appointment with my onc yesterday, ending with great hugs goodby – found out that her reason for retiring is #1 grand baby on the way and she needs to free up time to spoil and hover and enjoy. Great reason. She said she will keep her license/etc active so she can re-up at any time later if she wants. I’m guessing she’s in her early 50’s. Even though the minor edema I have in ankles and upper feet because of heart issue aggravates me toward evening, she checked it closely and said it is really minuscule, so that’s good news although I will continue to be aggravated perhaps! Maybe I will try pressure stockings, at least part time, and see if that feels better.

I am officially kicked loose: my next oncologist appointment is in January! Works for me. One new prescription (a preventive type estrogen thing) since, besides the Triple Negative thing, there was one slightly-positive-to-estrogen test result. Mammograms every six months for awhile.

My new oncologist is a late 30s-something who got all of his oncology certifications/internships/etc. here, but was born in Budapest. I could have gotten an older person but, as she pointed out, then I would likely be dealing with another change in a couple of years.

It does feel very good not to be looking at calendar full of appointments as far as the eye can see. Oh, yes, it does. I did a violent pruning of my huge hydrangea this morning in celebration of the moment!

This was/is a major corner-turning. Never bothered to anticipate or think about it – just keep doing what one has to do on a given day. But the corner-turnings do sometimes come and they are ever such a nice moment.

For the time being, my primary wants to keep seeing me every 3 months just to see how things are going. I appreciate that. He’s the one I can keep talking with about symptoms/side effects, etc. and get his good counsel. He’s a good guy.

Never been a big fan of the band Chicago, but that song is a masterpiece. I think you probably have to BE a Chicagoan to get into them. It’s like Billy Joel for me. I’m not a New Yorker, and he evokes New York in everything he does. Evocative of a city.

Yet somehow I can get into and understand Delta Blues. Dang.

    lilbirdee12’s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen

I just took two videos of drones. Three drones, probably quadrotors, all lit up, and two very large, airplane-sized drones flying in circles over my parking lot. I have video. Neatest thing I’ve seen in a while, and I’m glad I had my phone.

Dystopia is fun! Now I have to find a way to upload the video to imgur.
