Posted this next door a few years ago but thought I’d share again.
Many years ago we attended a cooking class that Paul Prudhomme taught. He showed us a simple but effective desssert: you slice an ice cold watermelon, you sprinkle your favorite rum all over one side and dust it with powdered sugar…then enjoy.
I do it quickly so as to prevent the melon from getting too warm. Amount of rum and sugar are to your taste…you can’t really overdo the rum though you can the sugar. I’d suggest getting a melon to practice heavily on before you go serving to the deserving..
You may need to practice a lot…

I’ve been thinkin’ that good fruit liquors would work too though I’d think twice about sugar. That rum just works sooooooo well though.

That’s enticing. I’ll have to see how small a bottle I can get at hyvee (they have a biggest liquor store in these parts) and try that. Just got the watermelon last night so I’m right on track. I may entice a couple of my neighbors to join me. I think they both would enjoy this too.

I really really miss Prudhomme, he was a real Cajun chef with a Creole bent. We now have neo-chefs, many from out of town, whose style leans to exotic ingredients served on a small dish with froo-froo dressings. Prudhomme’ food was what working people ate, solid, simple and tasty enough to make you cry. He did go into areas outside of the Cajun-Creole norm but you can still see his feet firmly planted in where he came from.
I have all of his cookbooks, some autographed. When my father died in Florida Prudhomme was putting on a demonstration at a local mall and I. Took my Mom, two hours after the funeral, to the event to get her mind off the day – it worked. He was that kind of a guy.
Bring your friends over, turn ‘me loose with the rum and sugar, make a party out of it. IMHO dark rum works better than light and if they don’t have a spiced rum plain works jes fine too.

You just gotta find a regular dealer that you know done do good. I just bought a pack of Bradford watermelon seeds, touted to be the best non-hybrid melon so we’ve got the rum, got the powdered sugar, now we just gotta git sum patience.

My dog finds them slightly annoying. However now, the icemaker, that is a different story. She was sound asleep today and just about jumped out of her skin and started barking when the ice dumped into the bucket. LOL

I’ve been gone all day but yesterday some of the neighbors were lighting off boomers the poor dog was shaking and trying to dig her way out of the house. Hopefully it was quite today. I have a valium for her on the fourth.
The other dog doesn’t react at all to them.

There is a natural treat you can give that calms them down some. I, and three others have used it with great success. It is called Quiet Moments by Naturvet. It comes as a treat or as a spray to put on their bedding. My friend used another brand and it didn’t work as well. All it does is calm them down.

My friend has a puggle who is very hyper. Happy, but hyper. And, she is terrified of storms. She tried Calms, but they didn’t help. I told her about Quiet Moments and she said it worked really well. The only problem is you have to give it maybe an hour before it all starts. And, she used the spray the other day and her doggie slept through a terrible T-storm. LOL

My Iggy has a thunder coat just for when she gets neurotic which really helps. I’ve tried a spray but they both hated it. My other dog is afraid of thunder storms and rain 😕.

I sprayed the bedding and then when she was getting riled up I sprayed the air per instructions and she tried to bite the bottle because she didn’t like the noise it made 🙄.

Seems to be a nationwide police practice to take credit for a suspect turning himself in. Watching national news where the police are saying they ‘found’ the Pennsylvania road rage shooter who shot the young woman. Yeah, just like the NOPD chief who said they caught the first guy who was involved in that Quarter beating assault, they found them at their front desks where they turned themselves in accompanied by lawyers.
Looks like a pattern, police stumped by high profile crimes, try to take credit for solving them when the perp actually just turns himself in.

NBC news boo-Hoo-hooping about Trump’s budget cuts, meaning the BLM msy have to do away with some wild horses that are over-grazing western lands. As they said, the BLM land can reasonably support 24,000 horses but have three times thst amount now. BLM also has thousands in huge corrals they just feed and try to adopt out.
The wild horse problem out west was a big issue 50 years ago when I lived out west and the BLM’s oversight has done nothing but make it worse, now they want more. News ended the piece by saying the horses have to be saved as one of the last symbols of the free and wild American west. Oh yeah, how about the western farmers and ranchers, BLM gives wild horses better treatment than they do productive range users.

Certain trepidation accompanied reading today’s General Discussion after reading the beginning of the comments. Salt on watermelons, guys, salt, and lots of it. Everything else is just noise.
Anyway, thankfully things picked up. Tucker is a gem, Stella, you/he are so blessed, and he is gorgeous (to match his owner no doubt).
Has anyone noticed that Stella’s followers, only recently at 124, have increased to 256? The Tucker Effect, no doubt.

Remember, those such as I had no idea anything about DJT, having never followed this type stuff. Yet even I could recognize the operation within a very short time, which only reinforces the truth that we are surrounded by willfully blind ppl.

I shudder to bring this up in a thread that began with watermen posts but the Essence Festival is in NOLA and we’ve had a particularly violent few days. I may be the only one who’s noticed but the local news has been broadcasting the car jacking some, murders, shootings, etc, without pictures of any perps or suspects, they’ve also not broadcast the police descriptions of the perps. From the areas of the city most have occurred in the presumption is…well…ummm…the perps are probably Usual Suspects. Locals get the idea and while it helps feed the denial of the cultural ostriches one wonders if there may be some other reason we’re not getting the police data.

The perps are the Usual Local Suspects, no doubt in anyone’s mind. Looks like the local MSM don’t wanna embarrass the visitors by reminding them there’s a ways to go yet.
