            I have a friend who is Mexican. He learned English, and is quite verbose, and quite intelligent. He likes to mess with Americans (he is one, and knows it) by saying things like that.

            “Elvis? Who is that? Did he have any hits?”

            “The Beatles? I LOVE 90’s music!”

            This guy learned English listening to American (Texas) radio and watching American TV in the 80s.

            He says stuff like that just for the crazy looks he gets.

            He doesn’t look, at all, latino. He looks like a Jew. His dad worked just across the border, and he grew up a Mexican. I remember one day, his first week working with us, him picking up a piece of our fine bacon, eating half, quite theatrically, and saying “mmm! that’s good!”.

            Dude loves to make people laugh, and can emulate a Country star or a Soccer announcer with aplomb.

      The other day I heard someone telling another person they were a pescatarian(not sure if that’s how you spell it or not?) and the person was like me and didn’t know what the heck that was. They explained to them they were a vegetarian with the exception of they eat fish and seafood. Who comes up with these names and ways?
      What was really funny is the person thought they said Presbyterian and asked them when Presbyterians quit eating meat. lol

        My grandson is a vegetarian (has been for years), and admitted yesterday that he is eating fish while in Japan. I imagine it’s hard to avoid, and he’s staying with a family that eats fish.

          I wonder who comes up with these terms? I’ve heard vegetarian for years and remember when I first heard the term vegan and then learned what it was. I wonder if there are people who only eat beef, pork or poultry and if they have a name as well?

              I thought that just meant meat and plants, so technically fish and veggies would qualify? I honestly did know a man once who only ate beef and bread, just every great once in awhile he would eat potatoes or corn.
              I was told tonight there are a group of people who call themselves turketarians, with poultry being the only meat they eat. I thought it was a joke made up by that commercial.

                  Yep, that is my son. If you have something he has never tried before and ask him if he likes it, he will taste it and then tell you if he likes it. I take credit for him being willing to try anything. My rule was that he had to taste everything on his plate, even if he didn’t like it. It didn’t matter how small the taste was. When he was 6, he told me that his taster must be changing because some things he didn’t used to like he now liked. I, on the other hand, am as picky an eater as you will find anywhere. 😦

                    My mother made me eat everything she put on my plate. When I was five I refused to eat green beans for supper. She gave them to me cold for breakfast. I still gag on green beans unless they are cooked in mushroom soup with those crisp onion rings, etc.

                    Yes. The one bite, no matter how small, was just to give him another chance to like it. I knew his tastes would change. And, he knew he didn’t have to eat anymore if he didn’t want to.

                    His dad hated sweet potatoes and told him that they were terrible, so he would never try them. I never cooked them, so it wasn’t much of an issue. But, I knew he loved pumpkin pie. When he was 15, my mother came in with a baked sweet potato with butter on it and just put it in front of him. He made a face at me that she couldn’t see, but he tried it just to be polite. Annnnnnnd, of course, he loved it. LOL I knew he would.

        Some in Tennessee too. I once passed a buggy on the side of a highway. I am utterly fascinated with their way of life. And especially admiring of them after that school shooting several years ago.

        Never have I had such a fine example of a community living it’s faith. Not just a person, or a family, but a community. For me, that example was huge.

        And how about when you think of how we should be called to live our faith out in adversity? What they taught me in that few weeks of news trumped YEARS of reading, attending church, praying even. They catapulted me forward in faith, charity, and my understanding of leather meets the pavement life.

        WOW I love this guy’s style. What a calm, reasoned interviewer. Perfect questions. Stone-faced yet affable. How does he refrain from laughing?

        These people he’s interviewing are Bill Whittle’s opposite. They are absolutely, completely incapable of expressing a complex thought in a manner that can be understood by a normal, patient, listening person.

        They just can’t! They don’t know the words! They don’t know sentence structure! They have been deprived of these arcane arts. They only know the words (“#patriarchy wooo! I said it! I got one in on the bingo card!”) they are told to say.

        It is absolutely astounding how both stupid and ignorant these people are.

        And they even admit it!! Several times in the video! That’s the scary part!! “I’ve been screaming for three hours; I can’t think right now.”

        I don’t think you need a qualifier on when you can and cannot think, lady.

        Never heard of this guy. Awesome.

      I think the Federalist has some good points, particularly about pressuring countries who claim to be our allies into refusing to let N. Korean slave laborers into other countries.

      But with that said, I will admit that I am very torn on the Warmbier story. Did he deserve to die? No. But how sheltered do you have to be to think that going to North Korea is a good idea regardless of the line of BS the tour company is reciting?

      I don’t know what to say about it. I’m not trying to be judgemental – Lord knows I’ve made some stupid mistakes in my time – but Warmbier’s mistake became a tragedy that was 100% preventable.

        His parents say they gave him permission. So, my own take is that they were the sheltered ones. I think for so long we have felt safe here in the U.S. Also, we felt safe about going overseas because our government was behind us. Not so for Otto. Obama was in charge and couldn’t care less. No political value that he could see at the time. I agree, though, that I would NEVER have considered stepping foot in NK and think anybody who has is nuts.

        My DD wanted to do a semester in Africa and become a doctor without borders… I adamantly refused and she’s ever so grateful she didn’t do it now. I think young people feel invincible and don’t or can’t see the potential problems. I do think his parents should have insisted he not go. Very sad situation.

          See, don’t get this permission deal. I guess they were footing the bill. In that case, I would have absolutely cut his funds off. Otherwise, in my world, not a one of my three sons would have asked for, nor paid a bit of attention to my “permission” when they were in their twenties. They were all independent by then.

            Took me a little bit longer, and still working on it.

            They send me a check on my birthday and at Christmas.

            They also know that their 46 year old kid isn’t stupid enough to spend it on a trip to an insane Prison Country. Or a trip to Chicago’s vibrant South Side, for that matter.

              Everybody gets a trophy so nobody’s feelings get hurt (means they don’t learn to strive to be best and don’t learn to handle losing)

              Given tylenol at the first sign of fever or pain (don’t learn to handle a little pain)

              Stopped from throwing a tantrum by being given what they are crying for (cookies for tantrums means they expect to get whatever they want, and now)

              Not expected to do chores or get a job (they don’t learn how to handle a job or what is expected of them)

              Being taught liberal values in school (don’t have a clue about the real world)

        He’s a lot like the protestors upthread. He was probably a really nice, upbeat guy. That’s what his friends say, anyway, to the media. He was naive, borne of ignorance. North Korea is not a place anyone with a brain and knowledge wants to go.

        I more sad that North Korea still exists and hasn’t been liberated, and all it’s leaders hanged from lamp-posts and meat-hooks like Mussolini, to the cheers — actual cheers, not pretend ones like they’ve been forced to do for decades — of millions.

    A few years ago I painted a dark, dank, 5-foot tall, spider-infested basement for bossman’s dad, the Patriarch of the business, and a real estate guy. Took me two days, because the first day had me so shaky I had to leave. Lack of alcohol and spiders jumping at me tend to do that. Painted it twice, made it look nice.

    He gave me $200. I even said, after considering the hours involved, “Really?” He said “Yup.”

    The next day, after I had given most of that to my landlord, he came to me and said “I accidentally paid you $100 too much. I’m going to need $100 of that back.” He was dead serious. I told him, honestly, “Well, you’d better go talk to my landlord about that.” And I thought to myself, “You’re a businessman. You don’t do that. Ever.” And that was when I lost all respect for these folks I worked for, for 9 years. Slave wages and Indian Giving. Wonderful Catholics. They either don’t get much out of the Church, or their diocese doesn’t offer them much to absorb. One or the other. Perhaps a combination of both. “I’m going to need $100 of that back.” Man, oh man.

      I’m glad you are no longer working for them. Some people are the religion of their family but it means nothing more to them morally than being a “Chevy” family or an “Izod” family. It is simply a label that they are accustomed to. I don’t know about your former boss man but his actions are not those of a practicing Catholic.

      That said the only way I moved on with my life was to not revisit the actions of people who were a negative energy drain in my life. If the thoughts came up I would pray for them, depending on my mood I prayed for a blessing or a holy curse to come to them. Soon enough it wasn’t worth the energy of revisiting their horrible behavior.

        My back yard is the parking lot for two of their flagship restaurants, of four.

        I see all of them, every day. The bosses, the patriarch, the employees, the bussers, the servers, the managers, the line cooks, and several people I call, respectfully, Chef.

        I know every car in the lot, and thus who is working where. Maybe familiarity does breed contempt. This fall will be 10 years. It’s time to go.

        All the employees of my former gig, I have great respect for. They are quite a team of flawed, yet hard-working, thinking people. And we talk every day, since it’s my back yard, about sales, about profits and losses, about business. Professionals, all of them, or about to be, because they are young and working with professionals.

        It’s the bosses that I had to leave. And they know what they lost. They have three people doing my job, now. Ten, even, when you count the maintenance and fixing and painting things, like all four restaurants. Walls, trim, windows, doors. Got it. And my brushes are clean when I’m done. Floor tile grouting with epoxy that thickens like Bondo™? Got it. You can add a quarter-cup of water when it starts to thicken.

        Then I go replace all the parts in a Men’s Room toilet. Easy. Dust all the ceiling fans and clean all the windows with home-made window cleaner and a squeegee-rag setup.

        TEN DOLLARS AN HOUR. Same as a 17-year old line cook that wouldn’t even put it in his head to clean a floor drain that looks like it needs cleaning.

        This is why I am leaving. Familiarity breeds contempt. Former boss said, more than once, and it’s true, that I could win a competition on a reality show for Dish. Yes, bossman, because I actually give a crap about your business.

        Those words of praise don’t fill my wallet. Neither did the $25 Meijer gift card for my 9th Christmas Bonus. Got me some cat food and treats, you fool. On call for 9 years, keys to all the joints, living next to the main joint, never said no.

        And yet it was College. It was trade school. Still is, for a few months more.

        How many people do you all call “Chef” as an honorific? A title?

        About four or five, for me.

          Someone pays you for your time not your soul, your old boss wanted both and you were wise to get away from him.

          I worked for some people who I had no respect for and finally left. They were soul suckers, horrible people hiding behind the mask of charity when they were their own biggest beneficiaries, I learned very quickly about what demons some so called “good people” could be. I don’t think about them, but I am not surrounded by them, I hope that you can move on to a healthier environment, until then I will continue to pray for you. It is their loss, you are the winner, you have your dignity, you had your dignity when they give you a $25.00 gift card after 9 years if under paying and over working you. Toxic people will be toxic it is what they know.

          Now you have your dignity on another level. You gave, you worked, you gave him the opportunity to do the right thing and he chose to debase himself and dishonor his own being by being a rapacious modern day Scrooge.

          Now it is between your old boss and Bob Marley’s world.

          And you Wooly take the next best step in your life knowing you left nothing on the table, you gave your all, you were a lesson that someone chose not to learn. Imagine how blind he must be.

        You are more generous than I, lovely. I used to pray that karma would bring them what they needed for growth… a place that was satisfying to me. Not giving the energy vampires sustenance was a difficult place for me to get to. That’s as close as I could get.

        You have my admiration for standing solidly in your adherence to Catholicism. I have never gotten away from my Catholic roots. These are confusing times for the congregations, I’m sure.

          Thanks Puzzler but in the long run I am the beneficiary of my own “letting go” I think when you have to let go of things from your childhood in order to understand the world it is a real eye opener and a path that the soul must stay on in order to function in the world.

          I don’t know how solidly I stand to what you might call adherence of Catholicism. I have some real arguments with priests, “upstanding” parishioners and some of the trappings but not with Dogma.

          As for prayers. I had a lesson early in life, my friend was praying that her husbands ex-wife break her leg.(Long story). Anyhow the ex did break her leg. She fell down the basement stairs of her rental home. She sued the owner of the home, won her suit and had enough money to put a huge downpayment on her own home if not buy it outright.

          Pope Francis is a dangerous man. A Shepard leading his sheep to slaughter. Too much of the Church (and I believe this goes for all denominations) revolves around money rather than God and that includes the Church’s interest in helpingrefugees. I would bet my dog that the people running the refugee programs rake in more money for themselves than is spent settling 20 refugee families a year. And I would bet not a single family is settled anywhere near where those being paid to settle the refugees live.

          I apologized to the lady, his best asset right now, because I actually don’t, and she was offended, and she’s my friend. I want his business to rock. He just lost three people today, and I hope my hope didn’t cause that.

          There is Karma, though. It’s Biblical. It’s cyclical. What goes around, comes around.

    Stella, your pictures are making me hungry. I’m in the middle of my summer love affair with fruits and vegetables. Usually I eat a lot healthier.

    On the 4th I plan to once again demonstrate that a true Southern cook can massacre healthy foods. We are going to have our second annual non traditional meal of pinto beans with ham hocks, fried okra, squash, corn, mashed taters, sliced maters, corn bread, and chow chow or squash relish.

    BTW, I made that corn salad recipe I posted on your recipe post. I added onion as you suggested, and I found the dressing needed to be cut down by about a third. Also, I used frozen shoe peg corn instead of canned. It has become one of my all time favorite summer recipes. I flat out love it.

            I think I used bread and butter cubes. I also used red and yellow peppers because I like them better than the green pepper it called for. Of course you can tweak it to suit you, but the biggest thing I noticed was the the content of sour cream and mayo to make the dressing was way too much. I wound up cooking more corn to add to make it work.

              I usually use red pepper instead of green too. I use the sweet pickles, although I have used bread and butter. I think the sweets are more firm and less liquidy.

                We have pimento bushes this year and I’ve been using them in whatever I can…just made hummus with them added in. I’ve also been making a salad out of the ginger-flavored kimchee, really ripe tomatoes and fresh, peeled cucumbers. I eat it while You Know Who sits across the room.

I can check to see who is trying to sign on to my account and there was a long list between 11:00 and 12:00 this morning. The IP addresses were Java 173.168.243.2 and REST Broadband 10.74.119.218. Does this mean that they were actually trying to hack into my account? Those are not my IP adds.

    Hahaa! I just got a lib troll to back down on Facebook. He posted a pic of President Trump with his head blowing up, lots of blood. I suggested that it was worse than what the assassin posted on his FB, and wondered aloud what the SS would think of it. He deleted the post, then blocked me. Since I didn’t post UNDER his comments, and it was under someone else’s post, all of mine still show.

    NOPD’s patting themselves on the back for arresting one of the four thugs who beat two tourists so badly they were put in the hospital, one in critical condition. It appears that the thug turned himself in but any arrest of any evildoer by NOPD is a good start.
    After the story hit the news the NOPD chief visited the injured tourists in the hospital…heaven knows how badly you have to be injured to get a visit if you’re a local. I can imagine the conversation…”Well we’re sorry about the incident, dear tourists, but outside of that how was your visit?”. Hey Rep Richmond, in 2016 NOLA had 175 murders and over 500 shootings, why don’t you and mayor Mitch get together and work out an explaination of how that’s 1st world behavior.
