I have a thought about Otto Wambier. Could it be that he tried to commit suicide? Watching the tape of him at his sentencing, I get the feeling he was not someone who could deal with what had just happened to him. I am not trying to blame the victim, but the doctors in Ohio could find no signs of abuse. The doctor said that lose of oxygen to his brain was the only thing they could find. I hate that this young man died, but why was he there in the first place? North Korea is not on my vacation destination list. I don’t think any American should be allowed to travel to North Korea! The North Koreans are all to happy to have hostages as bargaining chips.

We aren’t allowed to travel to Cuba (or weren’t for years), yet people did it all the time by going there from another country. Perhaps that is what he did.

My understanding is there is an area along Chinese border where security is a bit loose and people cross at will for work or whatever.

Otto’s father said that there is a travel agency in China that advertises that it is safe to travel to NK. He was very clear that this was the only reason they allowed Otto to go. And, I believe it was from either China or somewhere else. It was a group tour. That made it sound safe. Also, yesterday a doctor on FOX said Otto had been given sodium pentothal repeatedly and that can destroy brain tissue. Also, they did speak of physical abuse. I don’t know why the doctors didn’t say anything in the beginning. I think we will find out more in the coming days and weeks. Also, I am not clear on whether Otto took or even touched the poster. Someone said the claim was made up.

Yeah, right, reminds me of the people who get stomped trying to pet the bison in Yellowstone and blame the park as they thought the big wooly cows were tame since it was a National Park.
Lemme see…considering the NKs murderous actions over just the last ten years the folks thought that what, the entire leadership had started taking Valium the week before?

The objective reason that Otto was in NK?
His father answered that question. Start at 11:45
And again at 15:15 “Young Pioneer Tours.”
Otto went with a Chinese tour group that advertised “No Americans ever get detained from our tours.”
The subjective reason is he was a young naive young man who believed it would be an adventure and he would be safe.
My first thought when I heard that Otto was in a coma and had been since April of 2016 was some type of violence from NK thugs, but then the doctors said that no broken bones, trachea damage or other evidence of violence against him could be seen on any test.
I’m not sure what tests would reveal as to treatment that took place over a year ago. Was food withheld from Otto? Was he drugged? Did he try to commit suicide? How would you tell without a physical marker after over a year? Mr. Warmbier seems to have accepted that we will never know what really happened to Otto and he has all the information and gets results from the doctors.
From the small video glimpses we have seen into Otto’s life he seems to have been a very gentle soul.
I don’t know if the Warmer family will have an autopsy done or if they think Otto’s body has suffered enough abuse, if an autopsy is done I don’t know what drugs would leave deposits in the brain or other organs that can be detected or what can be determined from their detection.
NK brutalized a young American, they labeled him a war criminal as a means of propaganda, how they specifically killed Otto may never be known to his family or the public.
A very heartbreaking story.
Should he have gone to NK? Absolutely not.
That said I have 3 people I love going to Paris and London for two weeks this summer I wish they weren’t I’ve expressed my feeling about the danger of Islam there. They are over 18 and the world is an adventure. So I will hope and pray.

I feel bad that this happened and heaven knows that I am angry that NK did this. I hope I get to see that Communist get what’s coming to him for all the lives that he and his family have ruined, both his and his own people’s.
But I don’t know what else to say. I don’t have any desire to visit China, so I don’t know why he went there. I certainly don’t know why he believed a Chinese tour company that told him that walking into a lion’s den was a safe thing to do.
There’s a lot here in this story that I don’t understand. However, since Obama is not president, I feel better knowing that if Donald Trump draws a red line for North Korea, it will be done in permanent marker, not erasable ink.

I agree Rhea, I would never choose to go to China, let alone NK, nor Paris or London, or “No Go Zones, for that matter.
From the dad’s interviews I suspect the family is generally gifted in the IQ department and I suspect before this they were liberals and they are still trying to adjust their world view to the reality of the world. Otto’s dad said if they knew it was unsafe they would not have allowed Otto to go. Otto was 22 when this happened I don’t know any 22 year olds who need or would ask their parents for permission to do anything.
They seem to be a very gentle close family.

I have a son who was in his twenties when he chose to spend two months in Guatemala and Costa Rica. This was maybe fifteen years ago I’m guessing. His only contact with us or anyone was when he could get to an internet cafe and send an email.
I thought it dangerous and irresponsible but I didn’t try to talk him out of it. His mind was made up, and he was an adult. What I did try very hard to talk him out of was going to Cuba. Thank God he chose not to do that.
So, I guess my point here is that I think even making the decision to go into North Korea with a group was blindingly stupid, even using a tour group. But I highly respect my son, he usually has a very good head on his shoulders, he’s always been responsible and hard working, and he has been taught to think through his actions and live with the consequences of them. I don’t exactly know what motivates young people to make some dumb decisions that really seem like no brainers to me.
In hindsight, my son’s trip was a good thing for him, he learned a lot, and I am glad he had that adventure. But I sure am glad he backed out of going to Cuba. That would just have been stupid. I wouldn’t go now, I sure wouldn’t have ventured in during Catro’s heyday. Apparently, young men especially, have an adventure gene I lack.

Mine are going to Paris and London all prayers are appreciated 🙏🏼. One daughter has been all over the place and the other a few places. Every time I send them off with a wing and a prayer. Their experiences have always been positive.

Now that I think about it, mine went to Dubai, Somalia, etc. Not my choice for travel. Knowing he was in that area and chasing down pirates gave this mother some jangled nerves. 🙄

Even a superficial look at Young Pioneer Tours, the people who brought American college student Otto Warmbier to North Korea, raises serious questions about the practices of the company that advertises “budget travel to destinations your mother would rather you stayed away from.”
Warmbier was detained while trying to leave North Korea at the end of his trip with Young Pioneer Tours and imprisoned last year. The regime returned Warmbier to his parents last week with severe brain damage.
On the Young Pioneer Tours website, only a few of the many seemingly innocuous activities that the United States Department of State warns could send tourists to prison in North Korea are explicitly described as illegal. Young Pioneer Tours urges customers not to engage in a political debate with their North Korean tour guides, for example, because “their beliefs are important to them.” It also warns that customers should not take photographs of locals without permission because it may be considered discourteous. But the risk of prison time or hard labor goes unmentioned.
“Despite what you may hear, North Korea is probably one of the safest places on earth to visit,” the website says. “We have never felt suspicious or threatened at any time.”

Too bad it would be so difficult to sue the pants off of this place.
In January 2016, after the press learned that Warmbier had been arrested, but before he had been formally charged with a crime, Young Pioneer Tours leader Charlotte Guttridge gave an interview that appeared to incriminate the American college student.
“What happened, happened at the hotel and my belief is that Otto kept it to himself out of hope it might go unnoticed,” Guttridge told Reuters.
Amazing and disgusting organization.

I read an article once written by a friend of JFK Junior and his recklessness. He was born a man without challenges, a political spot was his for the taking, wealth was bestowed on him, women flocked to him, his mom and other family members were devoted to him, he was charming good looking, ect.
Anyhow his friend said that when a man has nothing to conquer takes reckless chances to prove to himself that he is not just a pampered fluke of the universe. Apparently both John and his dad did many foolish things like taking a small boat out into the open ocean and so on.
Any new pilot knew that to take up a small plane on the day JFK Jr. took it up was close to a suicide wish.
That is my long way of saying I agree. We all need to be challenged by something.

I thought about that but I suspect there is an immortality clause in there somewhere in their thinking. His grandfather got away with all kinds of things as did the other males in his family, uncle Ted killed a woman, rape accusations often swirl around the Kennedy clan, his father was a notorious womanizer but everything was always was cleaned up and went away.
I think the worst JFK Jr. thought would happen is that he would have a great tale of adventure and heroism to tell to his admirers. I’m not sure “others” ever really figure into this type of thinking.
I don’t know just an interesting concept to bang about.

It’s Hollywood, for crap’s sake, it’s news if the coroner doesn’t find drugs. I’ve heard local LEA doing security for movie shoots in NOLA saying they are to ignore the carry-in drugs that accompany actors on and off the set. I’ve been at security parties on security details where I had to walk away because we’d been told to tutu a blind eye … almost got fired from one detail as the drug use became too blatant that I’d threatened to bust some users. They live by different rules.

The story, as reported by Reuters, is astonishing:
Previously unreported court documents reviewed by Reuters from an ongoing U.S. legal case against Monsanto show that Blair knew the unpublished research found no evidence of a link between glyphosate and cancer. In a sworn deposition given in March this year in connection with the case, Blair also said the data would have altered IARC’s analysis.
But the data were not considered by IARC because including them would have made the report too long. Or something. You can read the Reuters story, or even this surprisingly sane Mother Jones article, for the details.

*A footnote: roughly half of all of the substances on Earth are carcinogenic. The proportion is the same in natural and man-made substances. The overwhelming majority of carcinogens that humans ingest come from beer, wine, mushrooms and peanuts. This is not because of additives, etc., but rather because those foods are inherently carcinogenic. Any carcinogens that we ingest via additives, preservatives, etc., are at most a footnote. Does that mean that I have stopped drinking beer and wine? Um….no. But I take it easy on the mushrooms.

Despite the fact that we now have the truth, It’s going to take years if not decades to dispell this idiot myth. Once the genie is out of the bottle it’s hard to put it back in.

It’s WordPress that is the problem. I find that if I refresh or reload the page, then access notifications, it works.

I have to go into wordpress/notifications/subscriptions and uncheck the box that says block emails. I don’t know if that gets checked when they do an update or what. It used to happen pretty frequently, but hasn’t happened in a long time.

His administration just released an executive order that will make it difficult for Bush to shield his White House records–and those of former Vice President Dick Cheney–from public scrutiny by invoking the doctrine of executive privilege. Shortly after taking office, Bush handed down his own executive order, amending the Presidential Records Act to give current and past presidents, along with their heirs, veto power over the release of presidential records, which are considered the property of the American people.
“[Obama]’s putting former presidents on notice that if you want to continue a claim of executive privilege that [Obama] doesn’t think is well-placed, you’re going to have to go to court,” says Anne Weismann, the chief counsel for Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW).

The Fourteenth Amendment, adopted in 1868, holds that no state shall “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
The question of whether “life” includes unborn life has been the crux of the pro-life debate carried out in the courtrooms for years.
Harvard Law student Joshua Craddock challenged the premises of both the pro-abortion and pro-life sides of the debate in the article.

I like the statement…but do not remember when and how the definition of “person” got clarified and agreed upon…thought that a fetus was not considered a “Person” until actual birth and stand along independent personhood….I would love the above to be TRUE…but I did not know that underlying argument got satisfied for all parties.

The original answer is correct if it is one board being divided. The person grading would be correct if short sections were being cut from a long board.

How so?
a) Take a 3′ board. 10 minutes to make one cut of a foot. You have two pieces. Make another 10 minute cut. You have 3 pieces total in 20 minutes. It still take 10 minutes to cut through the board.
b) Take a 12′ board. 5 minutes to cut through it because it’s softer wood or a better saw. If you cut three (x3), one foot sections of the board it will take 15 minutes. You will make 3 cuts.

I don’t understand what you are saying. It seems to me the board length is irrelevant if Marie is making cross cuts. One cut on the first board yielded two pieces and took ten minutes. Therefor tow cuts on the second board would yield three pieces and take twenty minutes. What am I missing?

Correct.
The student’s answer is correct. If Marie works at the same speed, 10 minutes to saw a board into two pieces, and she gets another board identical to the first board (to change the board would make the question impossible to answer) then the only variable is another identical cut to the first which would double the cut time.
A student can’t presuppose how wide or long the board is because that variable isn’t given.
A math problem can’t throw an unknown variable into the equation.
So therefore the teacher incorrectly corrected a student’s answer teaching the student to parrot rather than to think if they want to get an answer correct. Of course I am not sure how you would parrot the teachers “math”.
