Trump Orders Government to Stop Work on Y2K Bug, 17 Years Later
by Justin Sink
H/T from our friend Tex.
https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-06-15/trump-orders-government-to-stop-work-on-y2k-bug-17-years-later
Seventeen years after the Year 2000 bug came and went, the federal government will finally stop preparing for it.
The Trump administration announced Thursday that it would eliminate dozens of paperwork requirements for federal agencies, including an obscure rule that requires them to continue providing updates on their preparedness for a bug that afflicted some computers at the turn of the century. As another example, the Pentagon will be freed from a requirement that it file a report every time a small business vendor is paid, a task that consumed some 1,200 man-hours every year.

I’d posted on the disaster that WAS Y2K in our huge USDA facility. We had over a hundred shake-and-bake programmers (built in house) but none that could do COBOL. We also had outdated IT systems (as on the one thst cost us a multi-billion dollar program) sooooooo, we used tax bucks to bring in real programmers who were there months before Y2K and stayed months after January 2000, and worked 24/7/365 during their stay. We also had a huge generator and portable fuel tank brought in just in case the power went out….never did and to this day I wonder where the hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel brought in to fuel them went.

That’s how the Feds bumble along. As I said before, my agency was responsible for correctly determining how much I needed to,pay in order to buy back the years I was out of civil service and in the military. I’d been told the amount I’d had to,paybwas ‘X’ amount even after I’d used the formula to pre-figure how much I owed and found it to be much higher. The woman in charge of the figurin’ told me I done fon’t know what I was doin’, she wuz the x-pert and that’s what I owed.
Long story short, the Fedruh trained x-pert wuz wrong, my figures were correct and my agency had to cough up $25,000 to make up the difference between what I wuz told to pay and what I should have paid. The Fedruh trained x-pert who screwed it, and others, up received a promotion to another slot she was untrained to be in, over people who’d been working the job for years. It’s how the gumming done woik…or not.

this is disgusting….in the late 1990s, the so called Millenial Bug or the Y2K bug was touted as the disaster loaded to kill us all and destroy our life….unless everyone bought new computers and installed new major software systems….if added 500 billion dollars to Clinton’s economy in the push to “fix” old software, and foster major profits for consultants and programmers….and programmers were so scarce that their compensation went from about 35 thousand annual salary to six figures if you could spell Cobol or Fortran…..so then the deal was to import Indians under Bombay contractors who paid their local goat eater programmer trainees with limited English language skills about a thousand per month to live 6 to a room under US contracts, and charged 10 thousand each per month to the company despirate to prove to their customers that their systems were tested and corrected and would not crash.
Huge hoax…venture capitalists and software and hardware firms got rich…the govt still did not replace outdated and terrible coded software…just patched junk and paid billions to do it.

I’ve always thought that it WASN’T a hoax, and if they hadn’t fixed the 6-digit date bug in these compys, then all that catastrophe they warned us about would actually have occurred. When I say “they”, I mean many thousands of programmers and nascent IT folks who actually did mobilize and fix it in the few years before Y2K, because it was absolutely necessary.
It was only called a hoax after nothing happened. Nothing happened because they fixed it. They fixed it because it was necessary. Sure, it was hyped. But thousands of intelligent people actually fixed it. So nothing happened. Then, MPAI-people all said, “See! It was a scam!”
And please correct me if I’m wrong.
I took LSD on New Years Eve, Y2K. Last time I ever did. I knew the world wasn’t going to end, with planes falling out of the sky and everyone’s bank accounts and credit lines and insurance policies erased (because all the compys think it’s 1900 now). I knew this because they fixed it on time, because — and only because — of the hype.
(There is also a competing conspiracy that the bug was introduced in the 70s for the express purpose of giving the programmers’ mafia job security because they knew they would have to fix it in 30 years. Kinda like Unions making a highway out of substandard materials so that they can keep going back and replacing it. Or like “planned obsolescence” in the Union auto parts industry. I disagree. The six-digit date field was only six digits when introduced because of memory restrictions. We had a few K of RAM back then, not gigabytes. 6 characters was 6 bytes. Every character mattered back then. I think it was the last time the West took action to stop an imminent threat.)

I was CEO of a critical hospital propriety software IT company at the time. The fear had every IT ignorant Board Member of Every hospital and clinic in the nation convinced that all systems would shut down and all patients would die immediately if they did not buy all new servers with new operating systems and all new application software systems and get them in place to run parallel prior to cut over, and to demonstrate how they operatied when the millineum rolled over at midnight…and all Corporations had to sign guarantees and accept corporate and personal liability if that were not the case. The hardware companies made out like bandits….Hewlett Packard was not successful due to Carly….it was the Federal Terror Press Releases that got everyone to buy stuff they did not need, and to hire every programmer over the age of 11 years old…..my company’s stuff was NEVER at risk as were many older IBM and Mainframe systems at the time…..but the Govt systems were disasters anyway….but after everyone spent all their projected IT budgets for the next 10 years in getting ready for this non event….the IT industry went into doldrums trying to sell anything to already financially exhausted corporations with no budget money left…..and, of course….no NEW tech could get built or sold because this stuff had to last 5 to 10 years without replacement.
Many systems went like the ACA web site rollout…the NEW software crapped out and they had to limp along with the old stuff for months.
The massive TSA airport security deal going on now, 16 years after the Twin Towers destruction…..and nothing provable to show for the billions being spent every month seems like the same ilk…fear used to promote massive spending.

Question for you all. A liberal friend of mine suggested that since I am job hunting I should scrub my Facebook page of all political posts. I question his motives for saying this for two reasons. First, my page is set to private. Second, I do think he would be happy if I never posted about politics again. (We have argued about politics before. Last time we did it was because he was claiming that Trump had dementia, and he said it on my page, so since he made the allegation I demanded that he prove it and then when he couldn’t, stop trying to change the subject because that claim was outrageous and if it was going to be made then I expected some proof.)
Like I said, I question his motives. Any thoughts on the matter?

I understand you are trying to help but please give me some credit. I do not post private information on FB. I went through a whole relationship and there might be two pictures on FB to show for it. We broke up and some people found out months after the fact because there are no sad posts about the breakup on FB. I am not the kind of person who has to post what they had for dinner every night or take a selfie to post five days a week. I am the last vestiges of the generation that was taught to not put their whole life on the Internet.

I guess my issue is I’m tired of self-censoring (and I don’t trust this person’s motives). I did a lot of self censoring during the election because I worked with far-lefties for whom Trump was Hilter/The Devil (liberal tolerance is such a joke.) I got tired of having to do it.

Self-censoring is a different thing. It is not saying something because of what others might think of you.

thx. never heard of it….but is it anything like not saying anything at all that might eventually have non favorable consequences to you? What others think of you is not always about judgementalism, but sometimes about deciding whether or not to engage socially with a person at all based on their statements and vocalized or writen value beliefs…..unlike “people pleasing” which is disingenuous and manipulative for the most part and is fear based in general.

…And because of whether it might cost you a job in the market.
That being said — would you want to be hired by someone who wouldn’t hire you for conservative thoughts being aired on FB? I sure wouldn’t. I’d rather be hired by someone who either shares my values or is indifferent to them.
So, if you’re courageous, or foolish (fine line), you could make your page fully public, and in doing so, use reactions to it by prospective employers to decide if you want to work for THEM or not. They want to weed out new hires? You can use it to weed out employers.
If I had a FB page, I would probably make it public, and put it on the application for the HR department to see, in all it’s glory. Unless you want government work. Then, yeah — wipe that stuff, “with a rag or something”, like HRC.

Most of them, if it’s a big company, do this.
It’s why I say, show them… if your page is above reproach (in God’s eyes).
Their reaction will tell you if you want to work for them.
I wouldn’t hide my entire comment history. I’ve made a few missteps over the last decade online, but there is nothing I would hide. Honesty is valued by an employer that you want to work for, and is hated by those you would not want to work for.
If any of you fine folks wanted to see my apartment, after all these years of knowing my thoughts, I wouldn’t clean it up first. That would be lying. I’d probably clean the toilet that week, for sanitary reasons and for visitors’ sake. An apt (heh) analogy to a Facebook page.
Every thing I’ve said on these forums for a decade, I stand by, because I said it, and, at the time, I meant it. Both Woolys, both Taqiyys. From LGF to Gateway Pundit to CTH (even the Prayer Thread) to Stella’s Place. I’d tell them to google all four nics and read it all.
“You said the word Dindu! Nope, we don’t want to hire you, racist.”
“Thank you. I don’t want to work for you, either. Good day.”

If it does not do any good, get rid of it. Send letters and emails to your friends and do not be so concerned with instantly telling all that is going on with you on the public internet.

Don’t we all do that here? Last time I checked, this was a public forum.
Like I said above, there is a fine line between courage and foolishness. I posted my face the other day. That took courage. And maybe it was foolish. You all know my cat’s name, and Stella’s dog’s name. The current cutie, not her late namesake.
We all know what we all think about most politics and current events and history and religion — all those things “you’re not supposed to talk about”, and much more.
I think Paul said “Be above reproach…”
Stella posted a link from AoSHQ above. When Libs and SJW reproach you, who cares any more? They do, but you shouldn’t, if you know your soul is right with God.
Again, it boils down: do you want to be hired by a SJW-converged organization?

This new philosophy has freed me of more emotional angst that I can describe. Literally nothing the left says or does matters to me anymore. I don’t care about their tantrums. I don’t care about their accusations. I don’t care if they say Trump is lying. I don’t care if Trump is lying.
They created this Frankenstein. They own it. I am free of all obligation. I will never play defense again. I will attack, attack, attack, attack using their own tactics against them until they learn their lesson.
What I will not do is let them play my values against me ever again. I don’t need to prove that I’m better than them. I already know it.

But what if I weren’t married with children but a millennial living at home with Mom and wondering how to pay student loans and other bills like the woebegone Hillary, Sanders voters of 2016?
Would I have become bereft of all hope and sunk into a morass of self pity, anger and hatred of the winner?
Would I have been joining groups to sabotage the new administration within mere weeks after the inauguration?
Would I have resorted to vandalism, anarchy and vicious attacks on the new administration? Of course not.
Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.
When Obama won, and when he won again four years later, we all just went back to work, called him our President, even if we doubted the legality of his position, because the LAW said he was. And then we went back to work, loving all those Obama supporters like we didn’t know who they voted for, and didn’t care, because we LOVE.
1 John 4.
Democrats, they hate that reference. They hate. It’s what they do.
Lots of them become Christians (no Party, leaning some direction, any direction, far away from Democrat) because, and only because, they watch what we do, and how, when their candidate wins, we still actively love them for eight years. We don’t crap on or key their vehicles, and we don’t throw bricks through their windows, and we don’t attack them with bike locks. We go back to work and continue loving, and not really giving a squat who you voted for.
They don’t act this way, because 1 John 4. They hate. It’s what they do.

Our little Gracie is not so little anymore, she’s already 4 months old, trying to sit up, grabbing everything in her reach and is as fat as a little pig. She had her 4 month checkup the other day, her doctor said she should be in a commercial for similac. lol She is the 90th percentile in weight and 95% in height. She is a big baby, nobody ever takes off with her without her stroller because she’s quite a chunk to carry around. She’s already wearing size 9 months in clothes.
She’s the exact opposite of her brother, size, hair color, eye color, skin color and personality. He never was a big fan of people with the exception of women. She loves everyone and never meets a stranger, strangers talk to her and she laughs and bounces and reaches for them.
Her brother loves her most of the time unless she’s crying in her car seat because that’s the only place she’s never happy. He starts off being nice and asking her, “what’s wrong sister? It’s okay.” It soon though turns into, “stop it, stop crying, I can’t like you sister, make it stop!!!”

I had a very vivid, lucid dream last night about a baby girl. She was sitting up at the headboard of a big bed, looking at me. There was a woman in the bed, too, but indistinct to me. I was at the foot of the bed, waving and smiling and making funny faces at the girl, trying to make her smile and laugh. She did, a couple of times. Most times she was unsure and close to crying, like “Who is this guy?”
Very strange, very vivid. That’s all I remember. Your comment reminded me.

Seriously. It’s how dreams are for me. I just remember snippets.
I also remember remembering it, and asking, “Why did I dream that? What did it mean?”
Who knows. I usually only have such vivid dreams when I don’t drink. I only had one beer before bed last night. Most of my dreams are me in a kitchen, trying to keep up, trying to find something, or trying to deal with the paranoid schizophrenic we keep on for some reason, because he makes beautiful salads and desserts, yet has nothing to say but nonsensical verbal utterances and attempts to make everyone around him feel as uncomfortable as possible.
I just remembered that particular snippet of that particular dream.

This one’s destined for spam. Because it’s going to take me a while to type.
I rode over to the North Shore today to set up a brand new compy for my best friend’s 13-YO grandson — who, I’m told, respects me greatly. I knew him when he was born. I got his mom to marry his dad, after he was born — probably posted prayer requests online somewhere.
Me and C., we built his wife’s house, after she bought the land and we cleared it. Lots of giant trees. Once, C got his chainsaw stuck and we called my uncle, who bailed us out with a giant Husquevarna within a half-hour. They lived in a camper, and I visited and helped out often. It was a country block away from where I grew up. It was these two that taught me hard work the most, and lit a fuse, so to speak, in me.
Dug the basement in sand, poured and screeded the slab, watched a few YouTube videos about constructing concrete-block foundation walls, and made the thing dang-near plumb and level, with probably more rebar than we needed.
His wife lived in the house he built for her for four months, before succumbing to cancer. Her last words were “Pray to Jesus!” and the first person his younger daughter, in her 20s, called, was me.
The older daughter has a kid. 13. His grandpa bought him a tower PC, and a 19″ LCD monitor from like 2010, with a completely non-supported resolution. He’s been my surrogate nephew since he was born. I haven’t hung out with him for a while. Not since he hasn’t been hanging with his grandpa’s family — which stopped when his grandma died.
SO!!
Today, C, he calls me, on my day off. He knows I just got a nice bike. Can you help him set up his computer? And I’ll pay you. Dangit, folks, I needed that. Sure thing! Rode out there, and it was a good thing. Got it working. Replaced his stupid old no-HDMI-havin’ 19″ with a 37″ TV (kid didn’t know that a TV is a monitor, now he does) they had in the back room that they never used. It came on, and we all pumped our fists, and I rode home. Met C in my yard, he gives me money. As we’re talking, the kid calls C (on speakerphone) and says there are all sorts of problems! No internet! No Windows™ access!
I forgot, it’s a brand new PC. Haven’t really dealt with that in a while. I ate lunch, then rode out there again, and now he is more knowledge-having.
For instance, they now know what a CAT-5 cable is.
Kid’s friend asked me, “Were there games that you could actually play when you were our age?”, after I explained that it is difficult for me to explain how hard it is to explain Windows 10, because I’d been using MS products since before MS existed. Kid’s friend said “WOW!!”.
I did this with four kids in the house, complete chaos that made me somewhat sad. The kids have heads on their shoulders, all the way down to the 3 year old. All boys, frazzled mom, and an excited pit bull terrier, two TVs on, and me trying to get a PC to work… And I’m trying, twice in a day, to teach the kid and his friend how to use a brand new compy in an hour.
ADHD is the result of information overload. That’s their household. Total frekan kaos.
When I took off, the 3yo tried to high-five me when I put my hand out. I shook my head.
Then he tried to fist-bump me. I shook my head.
Then I taught him to shake hands like a man. And he smiles.
Unbelievable day, my friends.

Only on days like today. So much blessing.
Later on, I rode my bike down to the beach — almost — the lookout across from St. Basil’s, the Catholic church in town, to take pics of the sunset for you folks. No sunset, because it was overcast. I pulled my bike up and saw three people and said hi, and plopped down and started talking with them. The woman I was sitting next to was, it turns out, a second-grade teacher at the school I grew up in. I didn’t go there until the fourth grade, but we reminisced for an hour or more, about all the other teachers and admin. She’s probably close to 70.
She’s Catholic, and attends that church. I told her how close I am to being Catholic.
It’s been an amazing day. Starting with that first call from my buddy.
The icing on the cake was when I spoke with another Chef, whom I respect greatly, as they were closing up shop. I now respect him even more. I told him about my day, and how unbelievable it was, and how well it went, and he told me that he goes into St. Basil’s every Sunday morning and prays for us all, and how he throws his hands up and says, “Your Will Be Done”. I never knew this. To look at him, you would never guess this. He said, “Yes, I’m Catholic. Yes, I go to confession, and no, I don’t take communion.”
That conversation was the icing on the cake that was my day.
Menagerie, today has me closer than ever to being a Catholic. A strange string of events, all day long, from the time I got out of bed.

My wife and I visited those Roman baths in Bath in the late 80s, early 90s. As the sun was setting we were exploring the streets for dinner prospects when we came to a door plastered with newspaper articles about how good this restaurant was.
It was Indian, so we thought we’d give it a try.
Opened the door to find a dimly lit spiral staircase descending through bare rough cut rock. My wife was like, “No way!”
But I led the way and down we went, deep into the bowels of the earth. There was a bit of a close tunnel at the end, and then it opened up into what looked like Ali Baba’s cave!
It was well lit, and had a suspended fabric ceiling with exquisite carpets on the floor.
My wife was like, “Well, this is better.”, and we had a most enjoyable dinner.
It was called the Rajpoot.

Serious for Friday night, I know. Seen on Facebook:
Garth K: It really is a communist revolution. But most of the Left doesn’t even know this. They were brainwashed by the Frankfurt School via academia and Hollywood to embrace relativism. To renounce truth and destroy Western Civ. They call it progress. They have no idea they are Cultural Marxists. Lenin had an expression for Western leftists: useful idiots.
He then posts the following (lightly edited by me) quotation from Jeffrey V. of Atlanta:
Starting in 2009 I had a series of long conversations with a young friend who was interested in learning about politics. She wanted to know what happens next. Where are the progressives going? I told her that eventually there would be open violence in the streets. Europe was ahead of us, starting in Greece, but soon it would be more widespread. Then it would hit here.
Communist revolutions have a formula that combines elements of all revolutions. The Constitution is a governing strategy—but Marxism is a revolutionary strategy, one that has been honed down to a science, perfecting lessons from the history of all revolutions. You can detect this subversion from its agitprop:
• Separate people into groups (bourgeoisie vs proletariat, 1% vs 99%, black vs white, Native vs Immigrant)
• Stoke grievances – blame all ills on the scapegoated group
• Paint a picture of a Utopia, whose existence is blocked by the enemy.
• Recruit followers by offering them meaning in their lives – they are fighting evil powers, they know a secret truth, they will bring about the Utopia.
• Engage in street protests. When communism focused primarily on workers, this was done with strikes. But eventually this was expanded to any cause available. Civil rights, anti-war, environmentalism, BLM. Anything.
• Exploit crises. latch on to any current event and expand any isolated incident into a cause with which to blame the whole system.
• Glorify martyrs
• Personalize attacks. Target specific individuals in a divide and conquer strategy.
• Split into activist groups with varying degrees of radicalism, but with common cause. This is part of Vanguardism. The main group inspires offshoot groups who test more radical positions and escalate street violence. Splintering into groups allows the main group to deny responsibility for any test or violent act. Some splintering is bound to occur anyway, but communists specifically exploit this and coordinate the split behind the scenes. (Islam does the same, separating terrorist groups from mosques, but supporting them behind the scenes)
• Deny your final goals, your strategy, and the level of coordination between groups. Many individual members deny their allegiance to the cause and pretend to be independent or objective.
• Propaganda, Propaganda, Propaganda. Spread lies and rumors, distort the relative importance of everything. Take over the press
• Focus propaganda on the young, as they have the least invested in the old system, and the least memory or appreciation of it. Thus they are easily controlled, and fooled.
• Make it look like you are the majority, that you are winning / inevitable.
• Mock your enemy. Because you recruit from the young, it’s easy to paint your enemy, the older person in power, as out of touch, self interested, and clinging to power
• Infiltrate your enemy
• Attack the foundations of the system. Question its legitimacy, its morality, its founding and its institutions. Attack it from the outside, while infiltrating it from the inside.
• Offer institutional leaders a clear choice of “join or die.” Glorify them if they join, take them down if they don’t.
• Seek gains through Tribute – Find ways to make your enemy pay for your subversion by offering you opportunities to be appeased. In other words, demand to be paid off, but then don’t go away, just double down.
• Look for loopholes within the old rules. Any old rule that fits your strategy is lauded as sacrosanct and must be followed by your enemy to the letter. Any old rule that doesn’t fit your strategy is garbage, to be overlooked and ignored. In other words, you don’t really value the system at all. It’s just there to be exploited where advantageous to you.
• Redefine rules and words. Engage in any form of relativism possible so as to unmoor the system from its foundation so as to permit a new spin of the wheel.
Eventually, they hope some event will spark enough street violence that a revolution becomes possible.
All communist insurgencies use these elements. There are more that I could list.

There is a difference. Screaming is what Trigglypuff did. I know it’s nitpicking, but yelling is not screaming. Screaming involves different vocal registers, and (sorry, ladies) lots of vocalized hysteria, and broken tones. Watch Psycho, the shower scene for screaming. Watch the beginning of Full Metal Jacket for shouting. One is insane, the other is not.
