We watched a couple of movies last night that just happen to be from Europe in some language neither of us speaks. In one movie the wife accused the hardworking and faithful husband of having an affair because he was coming home at 2am regularly and leaving again after a few hours sleep. There was a lot of screaming and crying and smashing of items about the house. The next movie had something similar with the wife sweeping all the dinner dishes and glasses to the floor and storming off.
Mrs. Nyet excitedly pointed out each time during the movie how lucky I am to have her instead of the normal European wife (I only get the nagging and criticism without the screaming and smashing).

I have a question, can the most lovely Mrs. Nyet read “old Russian” my wonderful friend said that he had a little gift he picked up for me and it ended up being a Russian Icon from 1840, my other friends daughter-in-law who is Russian and was born there so speaks and writes and reads Russian said that the writing is old Russian so she doesn’t know what it says.

Anyhow if I post picture do you think she could read the inscription?

I’ll ask her, but it may be late evening before I can get her to look at it. The subject of old writing styles came up at one point in the last year or two because I have a few books in English from the 1600’s and had run across a French book with maps of Moscow from about that time period that I thought would make a nice birthday gift (of course I was wrong). Anyway, I made the comment that Russian was a very stable language vs. English (try reading Chaucer in the original). This started an augment about changes in Russian writing that led to me not being spoken to for a few days.

Well you shouldn’t harass the sweet Mrs. Nyet like that.

Thank you if she can or can’t read it. I have one acquaintance with a son that can likely read it but I rarely see her and only have her business email and phone number.

I’ll post it in a new post so that it is larger.

Did I ever tell the story about my French Canadian friend. Her boyfriend, who would later become her husband was rather a self satisfied @%$# she was a force to not take any garbage. She was poor as she ran away from home at 16 and had a rough life, he was rich and liked to rub her dependence on him in when he was feeling like a jerk.

They had been out shopping and she had several bags of goodies. They were driving down the freeway and he said the wrong thing, something about how most women never even had a $400.00 bottle of perfume and that she should show more gratitude. She took took the lovely bottle out of it’s box, rolled down her window and threw it out the window onto the freeway.

She then smiled her wicked smile and said “I don’t have a $400.00 dollar bottle of perfume so I guess I can just be ungrateful.”

Perhaps you would really have to know them both to appreciate the story, I’m not sure how it comes across, but it makes me smile every time I think about it.

Any Russian readers here? My beautiful friend gave me this as a gift. It is a Russian Icon from the 1840’s . I think it is lovely and quieting. I wish I could see all the hands that have touched it and know what journey it has taken. The writing is old Russian. I’m hoping for Mrs. Nyet to come through with her knowledge 🙂 .

It looks much like the icons she brought back from visiting her grammar school friends a couple of years ago. Perhaps stella would be willing to relay larger versions of the photos via E-Mail.
It doesn’t look any different to me than any other Cyrillic text I’ve seen, but that means nothing since I can’t tell you what the words mean even if I know the letter sounds.

I believe it is of Russian Orthodox origins as opposed to the Eastern or Roman Catholic Church. The last hands it was in with knowledge of it’s history was an ancient Russian woman who passed it on to her granddaughter.

According to Mrs. Nyet. (Loosely translated by Mr. Nyet)

Russian icon of Christ Pantocrator (“Almighty” or “All-powerful” in Greek).
Christ is holding an open Gospel book in his left hand while blessing with his right.
The halo of Christ is engraved with abbreviation for PANTOKRATOR at the three points of the cross.
The hand gesture meaning can be looked up online and has arguments regarding origin and changed meaning over time.

Can’t tell if it’s silver or the date from the pictures. Could be late 1890’s or last week (there is a cottage industry across Russia and the US)

Bottom text says “Seek and ye shall find” in an old way. (Where look …)

Thanks a bunch to Nyet and Mrs. Nyet 🙂 . ❤️

        “All-powerful”

        I like that.

I’m tickled that I know what it says now, thank you! And for the extra information about the crown is very neat 🙂 .

I’m pretty sure it is 1840’s as it came with an appraisal (antiques dealer not an Iconologist) and that is the date estimated and my friend talked with the granddaughter who inherited it, (granddaughter speaks no Russia but her grandma used to pray her rosary in front of this icon). The grandmother moved here from Russia at least 75 years ago?

As to his Christ’s right hand, in Byzantium tradition <<I think that qualifier keeps me safe? The three fingers held together create a circle which represents the Holy Trinity, the ring finger is crossed over the pinky in remembrance of the cross. In the Byzantine Rite of Catholicism we are supposed to hold our hand in that position when we make the sign of the cross. That said barely anyone does it.

The Russian's copied the Greek Orthodox Icons first with very large ones for churches and then smaller ones for people to use in their own homes. Mine is about 9 inches long by 7 inches wide?

Icons have a very interesting history.

        Thank you again!

lovely, I don’t know about Russian Icons, but I am a good researcher.
Apparently, there are several icons that have the same book, and I’ve learned that the lettering in the book in the left hand is scripture, Luke 6:17-19:

          Luke 6:17-19

          Blessings and Woes
17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

From what I recall from my Russian culture class, these icons are hearth items; homes displayed them much in keeping as crucifixes or the symbols in other cultures that seek blessing and protection for all who enter, and a shield from harm without.

Wow! Thank you Puzzler! I’m going to copy that along with Nyet’s information. I like the bible verses. So happy to know which ones they are.

In the Byzantine church even the crucifix is an icon, there are no statues. Or musical instruments for that matter.

An icon in a Byzantine home represents the same respect and honor for Christ as does a crucifix in a Roman Catholic home. It is the representation of hope, faith and openness to an eternal blessing.

I have always thought they were beautiful, I have a few modern ones but this one has a stillness to it that I love. My other ones are not ornate except 2 very small ones but they are probably less than 20 years old?

            Thank you!

Stellar are a wealth of knowledge.

That AN-124 on the header is a beast. Russia built it to try and gain some heavy airlift capacity for for e projection, lotta folks say they stole US C-141and C-5A technology but the end result is a beast.
Seems its biggest success is in commercial use where it can lift intact things that no other aircraft can. One landed in New Orleans to pick up and transport a huge oil rig overseas. It could fly it to its destination faster than a shop could transport it and time is money.
The one that landed in NOLA was part of a commercial fleet that was post-breakup and made hard currency for Mother Russia. As part of the crew there was squad of engineers who ran around the plane in flight fixing various problems, including huge numbers of leaks, true Cold War engineering. Toolbox included duct tape and bandaids but it did fly and carry staggering loads. One engineer said the engines were so inefficient that the plane took more fuel to get up and to cruising altitude than it did to cruise and part of the logidtics was finding airports large enough to land and support the plane within its fuel range. Nice to see but I still prefer my old C-141.

Saudi royals signal the real magnitude of the deal they made with Trump

    http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/05/saudi_royals_signal_the_real_magnitude_of_the_deal_they_made_with_trump.html

Change is coming. The king signaled that the restrictions declared by the Wahhabi clergy are no longer the ultimate arbiter of personal behavior, and that Saudis are going to have to start respecting the customs of the infidels. Something like his handshake gesture can seem trivial, quaint, or even humorous to Americans, but it is very serious business. The role modeling of the women at the highest and most formal level reaches deep into the culture.

It is now clear that the king and his two designated successors (Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nyef and Mohammad bin Salman) have made a deal to liberalize Saudi Arabia. The deal-maker president has told them that there is a price of continued American support.

This would be against the wishes of powerful factions of the Saudi Royal Family (about 5,000 strong), some of whom are closely aligned with (and fund) the radical Wahhabi clergy. For decades, the (principally) Saudi-funded Wahhabis have poisoned the Ummah (the global Muslim community) with their feudal views. Saudi Arabia became mega-wealthy only in the 1950s, and the world’s Muslims were not violently engaged in much jihad. The Wahhabi clergy and the Saudi-funded mosques they brought with them prepared the soil for al-Qaeda at home and abroad.

ADD: Very interesting info about how Jared Kushner brokered the arms deal on May 1 in DC.

This is a tangible and personal signal to the factions of the Saudi family represented in the high-level delegation. An Orthodox Jew, married to the favored child of the president (who became a Jew herself), saved them money using his personal connections. Call me suspicious, but I think this was carefully planned theatre. You have to see this against the background of the sudden new confluence of interests between Israel and Saudi Arabia, united in opposition to Iran and Arab radical Islamic terrorists. The two nations already covertly cooperate, a ruse that cannot last forever. Slowly and surely, the Saudis have to turn away from the Palestinians and toward an embrace of Israel. And it turns out that there can be a considerable upside to making peace with Israel and the Jews.

Yeah, the Saudi royal family’s large but lots of it are bits of marriage-related flotsam out on the fringes. Real power is held tightly in a central clique and powerful members aren’t against reinforcing that power at the slightest provocation – that beheading of the royal princess for a social infraction some years back, openly broadcast on Saudi TV, had to ve a wakeup call.
Wahhabis are the real pain but if the Royals cut off their funding and continue to find the couch potato lifestyle of the citizens they should survive. Wahhabiscare a far greater threat to the US than most recognize, they’ve been finding radical mosques and converting US thugs to their cause long before 911, something they have stains on their hand from. Thst ‘glass parking lot’ stuff’s looking better all the time.

I thought that those of us who believe Islam is Islam are supposed to be crazy people who are Islamophobes? There is nothing or so saith the MSM, that requires a Muslim to follow Sharia that makes a Muslim a Muslim. A Muslim who is having sex outside of marriage with a non-Muslim, a Muslim who eats pork, drinks booze, dances to the music of the West and pets dogs is just as Muslim as the folks who slaughter infidels in the streets in accordance with the call of Allah.

So how can Obama’s dad be a lapsed Muslim?

Man I wish someone had asked that rat Tapper to draw a circle around True Muslims and “lapsed Muslims.”

Had a good friend who was an acrobat, who really did join the circus. Saw RB & B&B in Tuscon indoors at some big arena there. What a loss. But, The Circus goes on, nevertheless.

Been reading a guy in India this p.m., who is really smart, except when it comes to Our POTUS. His read on DJT is way off, especially when it comes to the ME and world affairs.

Anyway, this guy says India is the unseen actor in the U.S.-Russia-China dance, with Russian nuclear being the loser, and Texas oil becoming king once again. How ’bout that. This guy may be on to something. Ok, cya.
Thx for all the vids, Stella. Am claustrophobic, esp in crowds.

India punishes Russia for its China ties
“Prime Minister Modi has plans to repeat his Madison Square Garden stage performance in New York (September 2014) sometime next month in Houston with a view to entice Big Oil and catch Donald Trump’s attention. The prognosis is that Texas is back as King of the oil world.”

Michael Halberstam was managing editor of the Harvard Crimson before David Halberstam was. As an undergraduate, Michael Halberstam won the Dana Reed Prize for the best piece of writing published in a Harvard student publication. He ended up going to medical school and practicing as a physician. But he also wrote a novel, “The Wanting Of Levine,” that was published in 1978.

    lilbirdee12’s prayer:

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
