    What the heck, rediscovering the joys of Schweppes ginger ale and introducing GGS to it. Nothing quite like it ice cold on a hot day. Sorta like Coors Light…but with taste.

    Ahhhhh…you reminded me to raid my secret stash of candied ginger, ginger’s one of my top favs. Best I can do is a four-pack of Stoli ginger geer mixer thst I mix top-line vodka with. Mississippi’s onebof those states where if you can’t get it locally you can’t order it. The Stoli works great if you use a 7-time-distilled vodka so the bar-brand Windex aftertaste doesn’t come in to play.
    I have ginger in all its forms from live roots to strange things I bought in the Shinee big box store. Czarina believes that ginger is best eaten by someone else. Far away. Way far away. And not talked about. More for me.

        Been interested in trying that but haven’t seen it here yet. Area’s still in a ‘dry’ state of mind, the Applebee’s, our post-dry booze go-to outlet, has stock beer signs for beers they don’t carry. Area’s still heavily ‘Lite beer’ heavy.

      Can’t say I like ginger beer, or any beer for that matter, but I do love ginger. I always put a heaping helping in my smoothies. And it sure does help along a marinade, especially for salmon, to toss in pieces of candied ginger, or fresh grated. Mmm. Sounds like that might be on the menu this week.

        Ginger beer is just stronger ginger ale, Menagerie. Doesn’t taste like beer–no alcohol. (Which, to some, would make it a waste of time, I guess…present company excepted.)

        Just hope it’s not Atlantic or farm-raised salmon. I don’t trust salmon on your end of the country. I’d send you fresh wild Alaskan salmon if’n I could!

            Outstanding! Fresh sockeye is my absolute fav. Even over king (chinook). Here in Alaska we call sockeye “reds” and coho “silvers”. Both are very good. Kings are best for drying and smoking, as they have the highest oil content. But they are a lot more work to fillet, being so much bigger. Chum (“dog”) and humpy (“pink”) are the salmon you only eat when there is nothing else; otherwise they are dog food.

              I think Trader Joe also carries frozen wild-caught Sockeye, but I haven’t been in there in a while. They stay away from farm-raised salmon. Costco carries the individual filets, but only in the frozen food section. Their fresh salmon is all farm-raised.

                I wish there were a Trader Joe’s in Alaska. Every year for Christmas, DH’s son and DIL down in Houston send us a box of goodies from Trader Joe’s. So much yummy fun!

          I barely remember hearing the milkman put the crates on the porch in the very early morning. We also got Charles Chips, and seems like there might have been a bread truck that came by, but I am not sure about that one.

          And oh, the days of the ice cream trucks. Every kid in the neighborhood had a dime or a quarter in our pockets and came running out from all the trees and yards where we were playing as the music from the speakers sounded from the truck rounding the corner.

          My husband grew up in a very small rural town and of course many families had more children back then. Clothes had to be ironed, dishes were hand washed, they grew gardens and really cooked all the meals. Mothers had a lot less time, even though most of them didn’t work outside the home. Anyhow, my husband said there was this enterprising man who took an old panel van and outfitted it with shelves and a cooler, and he came around the neighborhoods so that the ladies did their grocery shopping right there at the edge of their yard. He said it was a big hit with the women. I think he may have offered some things he had to go to Chattanooga to get, not sure about the stores over there. Anyhow, they were happy to pay for the great convenience and he made a modest living.

          I know you have said you have some things delivered. You bet I would if I lived in a city where I had that option. I loathe going to the store. I loathe shopping for anything, groceries, clothes, school supplies, you name it. I used to like to go to the book store, but then came the Kindle, mankind’s single best ever invention. So, now I could be a hermit except for eating out, church, a few other things.

        At first I misread that as Twin Peaks Milkman and got very confused, lol! Our local delivered milk company was Sanitary Dairy. (!?!?) I actually remember putting the bottles out for the milkman. Damn, I’m old!

        Just six years after this novel was published, we finally found the wreck.

        Simmons researched this doomed voyage quite thoroughly. The book is a masterpiece of historical fiction, and I’m betting it had something to do with the fact that the wrecks were finally found. As I was reading the book the second time through (the only book I’ve read twice in a row), I kept Google Earth open.

        On 8 September 2014 it was announced that the wreckage of one of Franklin’s ships was found on 7 September using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired by Parks Canada. However, on 1 October 2014 Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the remains were that of Erebus. The final resting place of Terror has still to be found. The remains of the ships are designated a National Historic Site of Canada with the exact location withheld in order to preserve the wreck and prevent looting.

          As soon as I finished it, I started reading it again.

          I can’t say that for many books. All his novels are good. One of the best speculative fiction writers I’ve ever encountered.

          Best known for his Hyperion series, which is mind-blowing SF/F, surpassing Isaac Azimov in scale and scope. This novel was a departure for him, in that it involved a great amount of serious research. I read the Hyperion series three times. So far.

        Puzz, I don’t know what to think about the song, except that I love the fact that we’re actually watching, in that video, the actual 78RPM record play, watching the needle move, via the internet, wirelessly, on our computers or phones, and that fact itself is astounding and amazing.

        If that’s why you thought I’d love it, you were right. Juxtaposing the tech with which we’re watching that old and amazing technology with this technology is a mind-blower. I don’t know if I phrased that correctly, but you know what I mean.

        The song itself? SMH. I don’t know what to think other than “what the…?”

          You’re a deep thinker, Wooly! I was just throwing it out there as a new/old music video. It juxtaposes the great music videos you put up – which I am enjoying immensely. Also much enjoy your sharing your knowledge pertaining to them!

          My mom used to sing “Three Little Fishies” to all of us kids when we were babies. I was born in 1949.

          It’s always struck me as fun little ditty, and not anything normal for the #1 on the record charts. But it’s from the same era as the movie version of Wizard of Oz (1939) and the Buck Rogers Ray Gun (1934), sooooooo……

            I can see why they loved 41, but they must be some of the few. I really, really did not like him. It seemed to me that he could not have campaigned worse against Clinton. I remember during Desert Storm reporters were saying the Republicans would be almost unbeatable. Then he blew it all. Yes, I know the economy got worse, and the great morale booster that DS was wore off fast when the bills came due, but I don’t think any politician made me as mad as he did until the Obama years and all the crap by pols on both sides then. We were really struggling to make it, and the man totally alienated even us, his base. Of course we voted for him, but I think that might have been my first holding my nose vote. Can’t remember.

    The left doesn’t want to secede. It wants to rule.

    It was for Obama defying the orders of Federal judges, no matter how well grounded in existing law, and it is for Federal judges overriding any order by Trump on any grounds whatsoever. It was for Obama penalizing whistleblowers, but now undermining the government from within has become “patriotic”.

    There is no form of legal authority that the left accepts as a permanent institution. It only utilizes forms of authority selectively when it controls them. But when government officials refuse the orders of the duly elected government because their allegiance is to an ideology whose agenda is in conflict with the President and Congress, that’s not activism, protest, politics or civil disobedience; it’s treason.

    After losing Congress, the left consolidated its authority in the White House. After losing the White House, the left shifted its center of authority to Federal judges and unelected government officials. Each defeat led the radicalized Democrats to relocate from more democratic to less democratic institutions.

    This isn’t just hypocrisy. That’s a common political sin. Hypocrites maneuver within the system. The left has no allegiance to the system. It accepts no laws other than those dictated by its ideology.

    As I go in to work in a few minutes, I could use your prayers, and until about 11:00.

    My forte is dish and prep and line-servicing and FOH-servicing. All at once, no problem. I’m at home at support, and on the non-line side of the kitchen. Yesterday they put the new guy on dish, whom I trained to do it my way, and he does it well, and they pulled me onto the line, reading tickets that just won’t stop printing, and making salads. Salads. Sounds simple, no? Five tickets hanging, within 15 minutes my area is a complete mess, and I’m absolutely lost, and I froze up. It’s not my forte. They just took the guy they cleans the whole battleship and services everyone on it, and does it well, and dropped him into nav and fire control, with no clue, and a new kid next to him breaking his concentration, which he really needs, with every non-job-related aspergers utterance from his mouth. A kid who won’t look for 30 seconds when you speak, “Hey, kid, watch what I’m doing here so I can teach you something” because his mind is elsewhere and you have to say “Look. HEY! LOOK!” I’m so sick of this generation of kids.

    I wanted to run and never come back.

    I talked with three different chefs from three different places this morning, seeking their advice. They all know what I do, and how well. They all listened and gave me good advice. I talked with the bossman, the owner, about 20 minutes ago, and he listened, and agreed that I need to be in the position where I excel, and not thrown into something about which I have no clue.

    I don’t want to wake up scared to go into work, and dreading it because I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t belong on the line. That’s beyond my ken right now.

      All I can suggest is whst I’ve always done: ‘left foot…right foot…repeat’. When the alternative is less painful than the situation, jump, but unless you have a comfirtable plsce to land…

        Speaking from long experience here, I’ve had @@@@ jobs you don’t even want to hear about, jobs that even years later work their way into dreams. One of my coping mechanisms is to say that the job will be over in ‘x’ hours and I’ll be looking back at it in perspective. Also practice going into your own mind and tuning the bastards out…imagine them scurrying around in their miserable, dark and dank lives.
        Thing is, we’re where we’re at largely due to our own choices and until circumstances give us a viable choice we’re still better off uncomfortable than dead. How muvh of thst irritating behavior by your fellow staff is just is just their peeved reaction to you all who maintain higher standards?

          Tonight went very well. I did make a point to speak with sperg-boy today and told Chef-interim to stand and hear me out. Told the kid the truth. When you’re speaking, when someone is trying to concentrate, please let it be in furtherance of that goal, for the business because that’s why we’re here. He both listened and heard. I worked the center (as I call it), doing prep, line service, helping on dish, directing the kids — one on dish, the other at the salad/soup printer, and making sure nobody needs nadda.

          I’m positive your prayers and my faithful request for them helped immensely; the whole crew was happy at the end of the day, including the FOH staff. Why? Because everyone was at the top of their game. I have no game on a ticket printer and a salad station. None at all. Spergy does. I think he treats it like a video game. One that he just learned how to play three days ago. Keeping backups of his mise en place, or calling out for them (where I jump), keeping his area organized well and clean, always gloving up and never messing up an order. Three days in. Dish guy learned from a pro, and five days in, never worked a kitchen in his life, also kicks @@@.

          God is good. An hour ago as I was walking home, I saw the chef I talked to this morning, and thanked him for his advice, too. His was effective, too.

      Prayer sent up. I do believe you can do this. You just need a little practice before being thrown on the line. I don’t take to new things well, but after I learn them, I can do a good job. I believe you can too. I am glad you talked to the boss.

      I got a job as a part time worker at a small restaurant. I was hired to just make sandwiches. I walked in one morning and the owner said, “guess what? You are the new cook!” I had never touched a grill in my life! We only served Breakfast and Lunch. The grill had been built for a cook who was over 6 feet tall. I am 5’6. The job meant that I also did all the prep, homemade soups, and salad bar. My brain exploded! I could not even sleep at night. My brain finally kicked in and said “you can do this!” I did the job for four years and the business boomed. Do not under estimate your talent and experience. Take a deep breath, trust God and yourself. Too many restaurants put emphasis on how the plate looks. Who cares? Make it the best tasting meal they have ever had! You win.

        Hey, we hired a Little Person (good friend of mine, too) a few years ago at my old joint.

        I was told by the manager, also a good friend “Yeah, there’s a new dishwasher coming in for you to train today! I hope he can absorb it, and do it, like almost nobody else could.”

        We’re standing there, behind a prep table, and this little brown arm comes up and introduces himself, firm handshake to me and the manager, says “I’m here for the dishwashing position.” I said “Good to see you again bro!” as we used to hang out at a park I worked at, a decade prior.

        I went out into the parking lot and screamed to Heaven. Why, God? WHY?!!!

        He rocked. We got him a couple of footstools so he could load and unload the machine, and he worked a whole busy summer there. There exists a picture of him inside (mostly) the unloading end of the dish machine, with mad plumber’s crack.

        God works.

        The manager told me later that day…

        “I hired him over the phone. I didn’t have a clue.”

        People ask him where he worked before, he says “At a Chocolate Factory!”

      He actually walked past his Saudi security guards, much to their dismay, and stood between to Saudi’s doing a traditional Bedouin dance. One of the other dancers handed him a sword. The two he was standing between had smiles from ear to ear. The others held up cell phones to video the event. I have to admit tears were streaming down my face. I have not been truly proud of a President since Reagan. Bush 41 scared the crap out of me with his NWO speech, Clinton, was well Clinton. Bush 43 was milktoast, and Obama the destroyer scared the living you know what out of me. We finally have a man of the people leading us. My prayer is that the evil scum trying to destroy this great man will rot in Hell for all eternity.

        shiloh, I fully believe we are beyond changing this evil mood/climate/attitude in our country with mere words. For well over a year now, I have believed the only way back to who we once were will be through a black swan event that somehow wipes out the parasite/BLM/Occupier/entitlement/snowflake/communist segment of our population. And that won’t be pretty under any stretch of the imagination. I also fully believe it is in the Lord’s hands. I pray daily for the continued health, safety and strength of our great President and his family.

    Did you know… Robert E Lee was married to George Washington’s grand-daughter. He worked with Ulysses Grant during the Mexican American War and became a decorated War hero defending our country.

    General Lee spent several months at Jackson Barracks to prevent the war from spreading to the City. He protected us and worked hard to keep our city safe. When Robert E Lee passed away in 1870, a former slave of his family did his eulogy. He said “I’ve never met a more noble man as Robert E. Lee, who released all his slaves more than eight years before the War of the States.”

    Shortly after his death in 1870, New Orleans concerned citizens formed the Robert E. Lee Monumental Foundation to honor his all earlier accomplishments. The Robert E. Lee Monumental Foundation leader, Charles E. Fenner, appointed PGT Beauregard as its First Vice President.
    It took more than 14 years for the Robt E. Lee Monumental Foundation to raise $39,000 of the $40,000 needed to erect the monument.
