    That there is Willie’s first album release. I’ve never heard it.

    It came out 9 years before I was born. It is as Adele’s first album. He has such control over his voice and enunciation. I mean, I always knew this — he’s a vocal genius — but I never heard his debut album before. He was a genius out of the gate.

        First, I go to Infogalactic, type in the artist name + “discography”, and see them all in chronological order. Then I go to YouTube and type in the artist name + “full”, and usually find the full album. If YouTube doesn’t have it, Vimeo probably does.

        I’m going to try and listen to Willie’s whole catalog this next couple of weeks, because he actually is a genius, and I’ve long neglected his work. Every so often I get on a kick — what artist do I know about, but whose body of work I know nothing about, and have long been told I should? A few months ago it was Johnny Cash. Last year it was Bob Dylan. It’s like, “Why don’t I know these artists like I should? How can I remedy that? YouTube and Infogalactic to the rescue!”

        We live in an amazing age, folks. You can even Google Images the album art, and see it bigger than it was when you had it on vinyl, while listening, on your phone. You can go to AllMusic.com and find out who every player was on every album, and cross-reference. It’s all astounding to me.

        Aside:

        When I hear inner-city types say “We lack educational opportunities!” I just want to beat them near to death with their own cell phones until they understand. “Bulls**t! You can learn French with this thing *smack*! You can learn calculus with this thing *smack*! You can learn that the Mixolydian scale is the scale that appears when a major scale is played with the fifth note (fifth scale-degree) as the root *smack, smack, smack!* You’re holding the biggest and best university in your hand, you dummy. And you use it to record beat-downs of white people for WorldStar, and claim you lack opportunities to learn. I want to beat you with your own cellphone.

          Just played the heck out of Mixolydian on my newfangled pianer.

          All modes are is this: start with a note. End with the next octave of that note.

          Only hitting white keys on the pianer. So there are 8 combinations of tonal sequences.

          Mixolydian is root note, whole-step, whole-step, half-step, whole step, whole step half-step, and whole step back to the root. Play G to G on only the white notes. You can do a lot with just that. But if you know the pattern for this mode, you can play it with any other root note, too.

          if you play, instead, D to D on only the white notes, the pattern is different. It becomes root note, whole step, half-step, whole(x3) step, half-step, and a whole step back to the root.

          It’s fun remembering modes. You can switch keys and use the same mode, or also pick complimentary modes. There are only 8 of them (barring extra-cultural tunings). And all they are is this: pick a white key and play to it’s upper octave, only hitting white keys, and the relationship (half or whole step) between them. Is there a black key between them? That’s a whole step. A piano is all half-steps. The key next to the key you are depressing on a piano is a half-step. Skip that one, no matter if it’s ebony or ivory, and it’s a full step.

          Modes is how jazz is made. And the majority of improvisational jamming, no matter the instrument.

          I remember jamming to Pink Floyd at a new friend’s house. Crazy guy with guitars. He put on the record “Animals” and I played a nylon-stringed Spanish guitar he bought for $10 in Mexico. He didn’t understand how I could do it, and follow so closely.

          Modes. I’m blessed. Or “touched”. Don’t know which.

    City of New Orleans is putting bicycle-riding cops on tne Riverwalk, two miles from the French Quarter to the lower end of the Garden district, one of the heavier tourist areas. The walk goes along the river from the Quarter, past the Convention Center and up to Mardi Gras World.
    Wel it seems the recent muggings, rapes, shootings and assaults have been a bit too many for the press to quash so the city’s quietly putting bike cops out to makevthe public feel safe. So far the victims have all been locals but the proximity to the huge convention center and the Quarter, with possibility of some important conventioneer being mugged/shot etc etc etc gives the city the chills. The bike cops will be easily avoided by the perps but their presence will help the tourists interested in bacchanaling stoke their denial. Just another day in the Big Easy.

      I wouldn’t go visit New Orleans if they gave me free lodging, meals, and a chunk of cash. It’s right up there in my mind with Mexico, safety wise. Plus, I’m holding a grudge over the statue deal.

      Personally, I wish all tourists would protest with their pocketbooks and let these cesspools strangle on their grievance. Got news for the BGI, without real incoming money from industry or professions or tourism, you ain’t getting yours. You thugs are not self sustaining. You’re killing your golden gooses, idiots.

      They want these thug kids to be able to slaughter without even a smack on the wrist.

        Problem is thst NOLA offers straight-laced folks the chance to act in the city like they really wouldn’t like people to act at home. I’ve had tourists ask me, back in the day, “how close are we to the dangerous area?”, as if they think it’s some sorta urban zoo where they can view the animals from a safe vantage point. Wevused tonreferbto them as ‘skin poppers’ as in recreational heroin user.
        They like to wear masks and silly clothes, prance around on the streets half smashed with a drink in hand, something they’d never agree to in thrir more civilized and progressive homes. Why, we jes all be prancin’ roun’ in owuh partee clothes 24 by 7. We drinks, secondline dances at de drop of de hat. Oh lawzy, Mildred, lookee de natives!
        You don’t hear about all of the thefts, muggings and robberies. It’s a dead issue if you don’t stick around to do lineups and come back for prosecution when and if it goes to court. Thing here is if you agree to fly back and stay in the hotel at your own expense expect the perp’s public defender to ask for a delay (two weeks or more ) due to the volume of his caseload. You’re gonna pay to ccone bsck how many times? So the true numbers are masked, just like the tourists.
        BTW, we don’t speak with an Alabama accent nor do we cackle like the puppets on the well-known TV crime program.

          Boston was enough for me.

          Former bossman liked to take us to Sox and Tigers games after a really busy summer.

          How is that relaxing? How about a barbecue and an empty beach we can all chill on?

          Something not two hundred miles away and full of masses of people?

          Czar, what is this TV you speak of? What does that acronym stand for?

            It’s funny to me, now.

            I worked in downtown Boston for almost ten years. I knew how to get across it in a straight line, even through buildings, before GPS was even invented, pushing a two-wheeled dolly full of copier paper and stationery goods (and whole desks) all over the city. I knew the FPS of every Otis Elevator in town. 60 State? 75 State? One Boston Place? One or Two International? (I knew a guy who smoked a joint on top of Two International when it was still under construction.) There was a building on Milk Street that still had old-school elevators, with the gates and the human operator.

            It was such culture shock.

            I’m glad for the experience. I’m also glad I’m not there any more. Too much.

      For Spring Break one year while i was earning my Associate’s degree, a group of us went down to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Thanks to lots of things, we didn’t get to see the house all the way built. I’ve often thought it would be nice to go back and see whatever became of the place – I’m sure it was finished, but I’d like to see it complete – and all the tourist things we missed while we were there.

      Now I’m not so sure.

        Katrina may well have taken care of your labors. There are armed guards you can hire to escort you out into the wilds of the city.
        Interesting thing is the yuppies/millennial imports are so icky that the thugs move out when the progs gentrify. Who knew they had an upside?

          It was actually post-Katrina by several years. I’m not going to lie, I was relieved when I was told that we would not be rebuilding a house for a Katrina victim. According to Habitat, those who qualified had already received a payout from the gov’t that disqualified them from Habitat’s help.

          Fine by me.

          Before we went down, my college made us watch footage of the aftermath of Katrina and nothing turned me off of these “victims” more then watching their behavior. Those “people” behaved worse then animals. I don’t know what to say about. I think primitive man managed to behave in a more civilized manner then those people did after Katrina.

            None taken, remember I was here in both a LEA and military duty. You didn’t get the full skinny and never will. One LEA rank who was featured in a number of cable and network broadcasts documented a lot of the things he and his team did and wasn’t shy about showing his work to visiting or local viewers. He was warned about showing his unapproved works, the city was busy rewriting the Katrina narrative, and when he didn’t stop they went after him. They charged him in two major shooting incidents that ocurred during K and tried twice in State court to hang him, he was found not guilty in both cases. They didn’t stop there, city pols and news hacks went to DC and got Obama’s DoJ to bring him and others with a civil rights violation. Again he was acquitted twice even though Eric Holder came to NOLA, stood on the courthouse steps, and declared their guilt.
            Unfazed the city tried firing him for following his lawyer’s directions on not talking to the city about things he was being tried on when the city could have used these conversations against him. Luckily he had enough time in so he retired and subsequently he’s been snapped up by another local LEA who appreciates competence.
            Katrina exhibits don’t mention how every LEA department in the city dissolved with many officers just running away. They don’t mention the rampant looting, the police officers shot by looters and thugs, the totally dysfunctional city government and the stupid blunders that led up to the storm being a bigger disaster than it should be…none of the inconvenient truths.
            Only place outside of an actual combat zone where I drove around the city with a locked -and-cocked AR was NOLA. Only place I’ve lived outside of a combat zone where I had three sandbagged machibegun positions (driveway of Holy Cross college and two entrances of the Maple Leaf apartments…put that in for NOLA holocaust deniers) was…NOLA.
            City’s back to normal, record crime rates with city boosters nose-deep in denial and whitewashing. Trust me, no offense taken.

                I went on about these guys in depth a while back next door. You had to live the charade to not only lose what thin shred of respect for what laughingly passed as city’s government. People bobbing in the water while city officials were setting themselves up in a swanky Quarter hotel with power, AC, hot water and gourmet meals while we waited months for that. A reconstituted group of NOPD was living in a commandeered elementary school, they set up a station where the rest of the city police who had NOWHERE to go could get a showrr from a garden hose, a hot meal, some donated uniform items and ammunition.
                People don’t think about how the city and the various LEA, even after decades of talking about the inevitability and consequences of The Big One had NO plan, NO supplies and NO organization. How, until the National Guard and active Military arrived it was more anarchy than anything else. The first state Guard who arrived had to bum ammo and magazines from the NOPD’s depleted stock as they came to a gunfight with M-16 clubs.
                City officials ate high off the hog in the hlitz hotel thst goes unnamed while NOPD ate donated/confiscated food until FEMA brought MREs. My captain friend bought food for the police at the shelter a number of times with money he drew from his own pocket and was not reimbursed or. That’s OK though, he was a retired Marine who knew what his job was, unlike the city governors and pols who can’t even remember what hand to put over their hearts at Memorial Day photo ops.
                There’s more but it gets me seriously pissed.

    ZM, if you are reading today I wanted to tell you that I just had a really enjoyable few minutes reading an old comment of yours. You told about your Irish grandmother coming to visit on Thursdays, and about your Czech grandmother and her dumplings. It was a fine, fine trip down memory lane for a Mothers Day post.

    The ethnic city parishes were gone by my day, or at least I think they were, since I never lived near a large enough city to have Polish, Irish, Italian, and other immigrant neighborhoods. I’ve read so much about their being built around churches, and life revolving around the activities of the parish and schools.

    Your post kind of made me think of those days that I can only imagine. Thank you!

      The church I attended as a child was founded by the local German community, and there were still Germans and a remnant of ethnic German culture, especially among the older members. I think the church was founded in the 1850’s.

      We had a German speaking minister, although services were conducted in English, and we learned to sing some simple German carols as children (Oh Tannenbaum, for example.) I remember the autumn harvest dinner, and the big crocks of sauerkraut in the church kitchen in the weeks preceding.

      My mother’s friend, Mrs. Schneider, always made traditional German Christmas cookies every year, and gave us a big shoe box full. My dad, whose grandparents were from Germany, loved those cookies.

        And these immigrants had to pass medical and background checks, had to take classes in English and American history and pass tests on their new country’s language and history. Prog engineers are quick to point out that this is a country of immigrants while totally ignoring the legal and responsible paths these legsl immigrants took.
        Then we have thevissuevof welfare. Not only do we allow them free and unregulated access to our country but the second their tootsies hit the ground thry get unfettered access to the Federal feed trough. They get thrown at them benefits that most citizens have to fight for, that is those citizens not already part of the Democrat’s breed stock.
        Just now the local news is showing a group of illegals demobstrating downtown. They want a full stop to all deportations except if the deportee is a proven (no mention by what standards) to be a dangerbto national security. Oh yeah, they want a ban on the term ‘illegal alien’ and it being replaced by ‘undocumented’.
        Interesting to note that ICE folks were around but even though one speaker said she had a deportation warrant out against her no LEA moved to enforce it. Waiting for Mayor Landrieu to build a monument to the fortitude of the illegal immigrants in the city who vote Rat…I hear there are some slots open.

          In the 1850’s I think immigration was more or less open. It was prior to the days of Ellis Island. My ggf came to the U.S. from Germany in the 1840’s (I think). All of my forebears were here before Ellis Island.

            There were some who slipped past but Ellis Island was not the only port, there were several along the East Coast. There are immigration and naturalization records at various cities in the East, I have accessed them for genealogical research, but our other borders were largely open and no one cared much as they needed the bodies.
            That was them, this is now. We have a large population moving in who heavily want to live the same culture here they did in their failed environment. They don’t want to be Americans, they want to be hyphenated Americans. Don’t wanna learna da lingo, they want a multilingual society that bends to their needs.
            What tha hell, I’m over 60, a white make Republican living in rural Mississippi, anything I say is revanchist, racist and not in step with the new American chamber pot, so why bother?

              My Ross relatives all came into the country from Canada, and settled in Michigan. No messy immigration problems there – it was the 1870’s. These relatives were kicked out of the country and took shelter under His Majesty’s protection after the Revolutionary War.

              My other maternal GG grandfather came into Michigan from Canada in the 1830’s and settled. He was originally from Vermont. There was a lot of casual border crossings in those days.

              my ancestor got here in 1732 from Ireland…but there was no US at the time..so no immigration qualifications….he had to help whack some redcoats and by then he was a landowner and a Major in the Rev and his kids were like Indian fighters or such. Guess we all fought in all the battles pre WWI and were on the winning side until the War of Northern Agressions came down and our Texans had to go shoot some blue coats…..Texas and the Southerners were poor….my greatgrandfather and his dad fought in Ross’s Texas Unmounted Cavalry, as no one had a horse….

                My Ross and Hurd relations arrived here pre-Revolution, and I have one branch that I can trace back to the 1600’s. My 8th great grandfather, Samuel Edson, was one of a group who founded Bridgewater, MA. Members of the group included Miles Standish and “Goodman” Alden. They purchased the land from Chief Massasoit in 1649.

                We had relatives from my Mom’s side of the family who trickled over here since the mid-1700s, my Mom and Grandma came here rather late…like 1946. As I’va said b-4, I dtil gave their papers my Dad’s parents had to sign stating they wouldn’t be a burdon on the state, would notvreceive any assistance and would get jobs or go to school. Oh yeah, then there were those pesky classes (they spoke English so it was US history) and those tests.

        My dad’s family was German too, although his mother’s family was English, and I think some Scottish blood too. But I always got the stories about the old Germans and their communities out in Kansas, along with tales of my great grandfather who came over from Germany.

    Bowden interviewed President Obama in the Oval Office for writing his book on the killing of bin Laden. Unfortunately, Bowden’s tape recorder malfunctioned so the interview appeared to be at least partially lost. While leaving the Oval Office, Bowden lamented the malfunction and was told by Ben Rhodes (probably a reference to the Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communication) not to worry because “We record everything in here.” Subsequently, Rhodes provided Bowden a full transcript of his interview with the President.

    National news is running a Trump smear centering around his love of common food, you know, the stuff WE eat, and ice cream in particular. They centered Ben and Jerry’s Trump-themed ‘ImpeachMint’ ice cream. Wondering if they’ll come out with an Obama-themed ice cream? You know, some vanilla mixed with bitter chocolate served with a faux Hawaiian topping. I think it would be good enough to win the James Beard award…

      You mean that even though he could afford caviar and lobster he likes to eat the same stuff the rest of us eat?…i swear the media just does not get it. Do they really think that after the excesses of Obama and Washington DC as a whole that I take this as a negative thing? Trump can eat what he wants, and I’m not saying that people who like to eat lobster and caviar are bad people, but I feel like I can relate to Trump more because he likes things that I eat. It might be dumb, but that’s how I feel.

    Sitting here watching a ‘documantary’ on the Malheur Wildlife/Bundy standoff…not that bad as far as it goes.
    iNteresting thing is how the ranchers, farmers and patriots who responded to the BLM’s Nazi-like moves are terrorists while the minorities who regularly riot and burn down large chunks of cities, destroying public property and msking peopke homeless because they want mo’ free stuff are hailed as Heroes of the People’s Struggle against ingrained racisl oppression.
    Black shooter murdered three Baton Rouge police officers and severely injured three more and his act disappears from the public consciousness. White ranchers and farmers, and workers whose jobs disappeared because of an owl, act up in a civilized manner and they’re still being touted by the MSM and government as domestic terrorists. Orwell, one; Liberty, zero.

    Lead local news story: crowd of protestors demonstrating against removal of the Confederate memorials in New Orleans. 2nd story: in Thibodaux, La a black male fired random shots into a crowd of a few hundred people, nothing yet on casualties or why he did it.
    Someone’s balancing the news…

    Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

    Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

    Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
