      Thanks Tex!!!! Not everything works out as planned!!!! I had visions of a hot shower, hot cup of Black Rifle Coffee……..reality, hot water tank died, and I’m out of BRC…..

        Oh no! I went without hot water for a couple of weeks back in 2014. Cold showers are the pits.

          That was after the Great Sewer Backup of August, 2014. Hundreds (probably thousands) of people needed new water heaters and furnaces, all at once.

            Most of the new houses on NOLA have anti-backup valves in the sewer lines as when areas flood to a certain level, and that means really heavy rains, the sewers tend to back up. Problem with living in an old and crooked city.

              I have anti-backup valves too. This was so bad that it was shooting manholes up into the air. Water was coming back up the floor drains from the storm sewers and sanitary sewers. I have a toilet in the basement, and it was just like a fountain. I had just over two feet of nasty water in that basement. Lost just about everything down there unless it was on fixed shelves higher than two feet. Took out the water heater and furnace. They are raised above the floor, but not two feet.

              I also live in an area that has old sewers. This was an uncommon storm. The interstate was under water, and I live about two miles from the interstate. Just a case of a lot of rain in a short period of time. Several towns were affected, and we were declared a disaster area. FEMA helped out with the damages, which was welcome. It didn’t cover the cleanup or replacement of personal belongings, but it did cover the water heater and furnace. I now have insurance to cover a limited amount of damage.

                After Katrina water damage/flood insurance went thru the roof in NOLA. Interesting that so many homes that were flooded and whose owners didn’t have flood insurance burned after the flood receded…probably coincidence.
                NOLA’s entire water system is crap, about half of what the city makes daily is estimated to leak out of ancient pipes. We still have notable underpasses, despite millions in ‘improvements’, that flood after a heavy rain, gridlocking large parts of the city.

                  They don’t consider what happened to us “flooding” and flood insurance didn’t cover. You have to have sewer backup insurance. It’s an add-on and not very expensive, but provides a few thousand dollars of coverage if you have an episode.

        I installed an on- demand propane water heater, been running some ten years now without a hitch, love it. First had one in the ‘on the economy’ house we rented in Germany, saves gas/electricity and I have a digital control that lets me precisely set temps…or at least lets me think I do.

            I got a Rinnai and it’s a champ. I first tried a Bosche but dealer service was worse than a Yugo so I wrote to corporate in Germany and they made US dealer take it back and give me a full refund.
            only downside, if you consider it such, is the hole for the vent. It has a powerful exhaust fan so it can push some exhaust, if need be, up a tube.
            There’s a few seconds to a minute’s wait, depending on how far you are from the unit, but hen the hot water comes it’s hot. As I said I also have a digital control unit where you can dial in how hot you want the outflow to be within limits they set. Mine goes from warm to OH S****!.
            Not having that gas constantly heating water you’re not using for hours on end does save gas, you’ll notice it on your bills. And as I said, that thing’s been on the wall for ten years without a hitch. Best thing Rush ever did was turning me on to Rinnai

          The higher end houses near the cottage have them installed by the builder. I believe they use NG.

            I’ve seen ’em in both gasses and electric, ones we had in Germany were right over each sink/bath rather than whole-house. I believe it pays for itself in propane savings over the years as it doesn’t spend most of its time keeping water hot for the 23 hours a day you don’t use it.

          Hotty Gram stopped by and within an hour all is working. All connections are the quick connect, including gas (and I bubble tested the connection twice). Once the regular coffee brewed, Blueberry muffins, and Blueberry pie I’ll enjoy later.

      “This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United,” United’s Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz later followed up in his own statement. “I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened.”

      Seems that the folks at United are feeling upset. 🙄

          Are they charging extra for the Fight Club section? Did you see the good doc was convicted of trading narcotics for sexual favors from one of his male patients? BTW the doc is a married man with 5 grandchildren.

          So perhaps he really did have a patient that he had to see 🤔.

              When I rode Amtrak a woman had a meltdown because she was told the stop was not a smoke stop. That meant that she had to wait (gasp) 20 min until the next stop. She threatened the conductor who was young and new, and the head conductor and others came into the car to help calm her down. She was so out of control they had the police take her off at that next stop. Nuts are all over.

        Are there going to be some parents in the near future who will be saying to Johnny,

        “If you don’t shape up, I’m gonna be re-accommodating you” ?

        Unfortunately, all of the people vowing to fly the other airlines are perhaps overlooking that every one of them has the contractual right to remove anyone from a flight as a result of overbooking or anything else….of course, most of them won’t be dragged down the aisle. Maybe that’s the distinction without an essential difference.

          One of my family members works for a major airline at O’Hare. He said that from what he has heard the passenger was not informed by the airline that he legally had to leave the plane. He was simply told that because his seat number was part of the “loser draw” that he had to disembark.

          It sounds like the passenger has previously been in anger management classes mandated by the court.

          Other than the public relation nightmare that this is turning out to be my best guess is that he is going to walk away with some financial compensation. United/O’Hare/CPD will say the problem was obviously with this passenger in particular since 3 other passengers disembarked without any incident.

          I read or heard somewhere that 40,000 passengers a year are bumped from flights by airlines every year on top of those who choose to accept the compensation and take a later flight.

            A personal acquaintance of mine had to go through court-ordered anger management. which is irrelevant unless they are going to start screening every ticket holder for such events.

            Do you think that a potential for financial compensation makes this kind more acceptable.

            This is the air line culture, combined with the TSA domination of individuals’ lives and bodies…..it’s a nasty stew as far as I’m concerned and this incident reflects it appropriately.

              I agree with you. I’m not on the side of dragging folks off of planes because the airline needs the seats. I’m just anticipating the defense. Anger management classes might be irrelevant as to whether or not someone can fly but his history will not be irrelevant when it comes to compensation.

              I haven’t flown in years. I avoid it just because of the culture and now I live close to most of my family members.

      I thought it was hilarious that United’s CEO put out a dumb non-apology on Twitter, and someone in the responses said that they were not going to fly with United again and that American, delta, and Southwest should get ready for the incoming business. Southwest popped right up responding to him and was pointing out that they were ready and had a rewards program. I just thought that was the funniest thing ever. Southwest seizes the moment.

      No word on whether Southwest will be making this their new motto.

          I love Southwest.

          My dad bought the ticket. I was being driven to GR Airport, and 3 miles out, still on the freeway, in farm country, my ride’s car ran out of gas. He had a bowl (and ganja) in the center console. I declined to toke, because I’m about to go through TSA.

          We’re cruising along nicely, and he says, “Aw, ***k.” I say “What?” He says, we’re out of gas. I just want to go to my folks place for a week. He coasts as far as he can in the breakdown lane, and I make the fastest, best decision I’ve ever made. I unbuckle my seat-belt before the car even halts at a rise, thinking, “I don’t wanna miss my flight!” and “I don’t wanna wait for the State Police to show up and bust my idiot driver who didn’t gas up before driving me to GR!”

          I said, “Do you have any money? Give me a 20.” I jumped out of the car, (This is winter.), and ran down a huge embankment, jumped over the fence at the bottom, and ran 50 yards to the only farmhouse in sight. Keep in mind I’m wearing my porkpie and somewhat well-dressed. I knock on the door.

          A kid, probably 14 or so, answers the door! I ask him if they have any gas I can buy, and very quickly explain my situation.

          His mom comes up behind him, and, in Mom Mode, says “NO. Try the next house.”

          The dad arrives, and hears my plea, shushes them, and takes me out to the garage, where he has a full 5-gallon can of gas. He offers to drive me to the broke-down car. I say “NO! It’s RIGHT THERE!”, and I point up the hill. He and I run to the hill, I run up, me and the driver re-fill the gas tank, and I make to run down the hill, and this homeowner, he says “No! Throw it to me! GO!” Christmas Spirit, right there, folks.

          I get to the airport and go through all that (which is easy-peasy at GR), and when I get to the terminal, everyone’s all lined up, and ten seconds after I get there (at position 2 in line, because my dad paid $10 or so extra to get me in Group A). I am sweating like a pig at this point, and probably look like a terrorist, but I was the second person on the plane. I chose the front seat, aft. The legroom. OMG. It was a miracle.

          When we were coasting in the breakdown lane, I actually called my dad in FL and said, “Yep, we’re running out of gas, and I probably won’t make my flight. Wait! Hold on, Dad! I have an idea!”

          I’ll never forget the SW flight attendant next to me, asking me why I was sweating so bad, and explaining my story, and her pleased reaction. The couple next to me bought me beer, and I let their baby girl wear my porkpie.

    I am posting this, because we all like a good happy ending doggie story. Jasons’ dog, Gunnar, was hit by a car and paralyzed. Jason wouldn’t let him be put down and got a cart for him. He has since set up a foundation to get carts to other dog owners whose dogs need them.

    Well now, seems to be some question as to if the Russians had prior knowledge of the Syrian Sarin attacks. Question I have is ‘how high up the chain that foreknowledge go, if there were any?’.
    Problem is that the Russians as the USSR didn’t treat chem weapons with dread and reverence like the US does, to them once they were released from their depots they were treated as regular rounds of ammunition to be used at the field Army commander’s discretion. Some of that attitude may still exist at the Russian advisory level in Syria. after all, it would have been Assad who made the call so the Russians could wash their hands.
    It’s possible that Russian advisory personnel at the airbase would at least have seen then Syrians prepping and loading their planes and reported it up the chain…question again being ‘how far up the chain did the report go?’. The Russians have undoubtedly known Assad was using chlorine and, when they saw the US more or less ignored it, may have just shrugged off Assad’s moving the line forward.
    The Russians also might have thought the risk was worth it as they undoubtedly have a replacement for Assad in the wings. The attack wasn’t what one would call a tactical success unless scaring the hell out of the population was the object and the fallout were unanticipated.
    right now with the pending problems in Korea the US’s plate is full and Syria will have to go to a rear burner, let’s see what sop the Russians offer us, if any at all, on Syria.

      I’ve wondered if much of this has been to test President Trump’s mettle, seeing as the last administration would set “red lines”, then said lines would get crossed and O and Kerry would do nothing. Are they just seeing what pushes President Trump’s buttons? It’s a dangerous game to play to gas your own people and then sit back and wait for a reaction. I am admittedly very uninformed and naive on foreign affairs, I just keep hoping we don’t end up having to put more boots on the ground.

        US used real chem weapons in training early on but when Nixon canned the Chemical Corps many defensive training programs went to crap like diesel. When I requaled at the old 9th Infantry school at Ft Lewis (guess how long ago that was) we used real but dilute agents. Later at Big Mac the school used real agents, not enough to kill you but enough to make you sick if you screwed up. I can remember some chem people who, back with the original chem corps, who’d ‘branded’ themselves with a tiny drop of mustard gas…small drop, quarter to half dollar-size scar, that was hard corps.

          Yeah that was long ago, 9thID, “Toys R US”!!! That’s what we call the division in the 80’s….I was at Dugway, testing the Desert phase of RS. Real masks, filters, Chem suits. When one of our distant M8s went off…..no it wasn’t bug spray…….

            Back in the day the Army was testing modern stiff at Lewis, thing I remrmber most was dune buggies and they were kicking the he’ll out of regular troop formations. A lot of the stuff was really off the wall stuff, some regular cartoonish. The group doing the tests was the High Tech Test Center, abbreviated as HTTS and referred to by the troops as ‘Here, Try This S@@@’. I still have a t-shirt the guys from a company pushing a dune buggy called the ‘rascally rabbit’. SF and Rangers later picked up and further developed the dune buggy as an operational vehicle.

            Dugway and Tooele are sotted with chem/bio agents as well as unexploded ordnance, great place to do real-life training.
            In the late 70s they had a prairie fire gone wild at Camp Williams, a ross thevstreet from the new NSA Center. There were decades upon decades of UXOs all over the area from WWI stuff thru some of the latest stuff. We were out there on our dozers cutting fire lanes and every mow and then something would pop off. I can’t even imagine what it would be like if the open areas at Dugway/Tooele caught fire.

    On a different note, China’s said to be moving 150,000 troops and support to their border with NK. Nothing from China on if they are being sent as a warning to the US that China may still consider active intervention were the US to take action, if it’s the Chinese sending NK its own warning or China defending against an anticipated flood of NK refugees.
    Watch to see if China ups the numbers and what kinds of troops and support they are. Oh to live in interesting times.

        The talk now is about NK having nuke ICBMs that could reach the US and Audtralian coasts…everyone forgets the Chinese see that as a missile capable of hitting the US or Aussie coast could also hit any target in China.

        Yeah, that was a political move to give NK the idea that China’s upset. Chona forsn’t need to buy that coal as much as N Korea needs to sell it, and buying from the US instead reaffirms that signal.
        China needs stability on the mainland and NK’s a wildcard. NK has been a Russian client state more than it has Chinese and this sends a message to Russia also, especially after Putin moved those extra troops and IRBMs to the Russ/Chinese border. The Chinesecand Koreans period aren’t great friends, the Chinese intervention in the Korean War wasn’t as much about their protecting the Koreans as it was about protecting Chinese interests. I’m betting China could live with a united Korea under SK leadership if the US pulled its bases out of Korea. Let’s see what the upcoming SK election holds, the candidates are talking more conciliation than confrontation and the public is eating it up. China could use a hardworking and tehno savvy workforce/neighbor it could sub work to, especially with the US pulled back to Japan.

      I was on the pier in Santa Monica watching a group of Pelicans just feeding and doing their thing. One nasty seagull (I am guessing a Liberal) was antagonizing one of the Pelicans. In his face, pecking at him, and just basically being a jerk. The Pelican calmly reached over, grabbed the seagull by the head and shook the living doodoo out of him. Calmly set him back in the water. The seagull tried to swim around and regain his cool, but it looked more like a drunkin sailor. I think he got the message.

      Thanks for the reminder. I need to buy some latches for the cupboard doors. The 8 month old has learned how to open all the cabinet doors in the last week or so. I got her when she was about 4 and a half weeks old. Momma did not have enough milk. My 9 year old stared at the kitten and then at me for about 10 minutes. One final look at me and I read his mind. “A kitten? I did not ask for a kitten! What have you done to me?” She grabs his tail, jumps on him when he is asleep, jumps out of closets at hum, and basically terrorizes him every chance she gets. He still gives me the evil eye.

    I know I posted on this before…time for a catchup. About 18 months ago a Tulane medical student was driving down a NOLA street at night and sees a young black man trying to kidnap a young woman. He gets out of his car to try and rescue her and the perp shoots him in the stomach. The surveillance tape on a nearby dtore then catches the perp, as the student’s on the ground clutching his stomach, try to shoot hom in the head but his gun jams. The perp tries to clear the gun a number of times, each time putting the gun to the head of the fully aware victim and pulling the trigger, and each time it refuses to fire. The perp finally leaves, leaving the vic on the ground.
    About 24 hours later the perp was caught AFTER he carjacks, robs and rapes a man and his wife…yup, rapes both of them.
    Local TV is doing a story on the now-doctor who was the student shot in the gut. He’s now working as an orthopedic surgeon in New York and has started a fund to target at-risk innercity youth, working to bring them back from the dark side. God bless that man, he’s a better man than I, I’d be out raising funds to buy police bigger guns and subsidize CCW training.

        Another station clarified – he didn’t create a new agency, he psrtnered with an existing one in NOLA founded by white liberals who believe that patting little thugs on the head and playin b-ball with them will turn them from the dark side. Why, when faced with that inevitable decision of selling drugs and carjacking for chopshops, they’ll realize that even though the thug/gangster life gives them huge amounts of money, no tax problems and really neato benefits that min-wage job gets them Obamacare and Social Security.
