        B-58 Proves Supersonic Ejection To Be Bear-able In 1962

        The Convair B-58 originally went into service in 1960 with standard ejection seats, but the possibility of ejecting at supersonic speeds and at extreme high altitude meant the crewman stood little chance of surviving these extreme conditions. To deal with this situation, Convair worked with the Stanley Aircraft Corporation to develop an escape capsule. The capsule is shown in the pic above, and it was an extremely interesting piece of equipment that actually closed clamshell doors over the crewman and then pressurized the capsule before ejecting out of the aircraft.

        The first live, inflight supersonic test of the escape capsule took place on March 21, 1962, but the body inside wasn’t a member of the Air Force… it was a female bear name Yogi! That’s her in the photo above. [see pic at site] The bear most accurately represented the weight of a pilot, so they drugged her up, strapped her in, and then ejected her out of a B-58 at 35,000 and at a speed of 870 mph. 7 minutes and 49 seconds later, Yogi touched down under parachute, still inside the capsule doing just fine. The Stanley escape capsule had proved to work great in protecting against the high wind blast, the extreme cold and the low air pressure. About 2 weeks later another bear named Big John was ejected at 45,000 and at a speed over 1,000 mph! Once again the capsule worked great and the bear reached the ground unharmed.

          If you read Neil Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle trilogy, you’ll see how folks have always been horrified at how science, called then “natural philosophy”, was carried out. Folks in 16th century England didn’t cotton to hearing animal screams as they were vivisected, or drugged, or done many other unmentionable things, for science’s sake.

          Top of the food chain. We can do that, for our survival. And we did. It’s not as we did it for fun, for s**ts and giggles.

          It is what it is.

        Yes, broken bones but they (more than one was used) survived. They were used to test the escape pod on the B-58 as it flew at better than Mach-2 and crew would not survive a better than Mach-1 ejection in an ejection seat alone.
        B-58 was a radical bomber, some cutting egde stuff that’s still current in the space program. Pod underneath the plane held fuel and bomb so that the empty tank could be dropped with the bomb. Fuel circulated thru tubing in its skin so that it could help cool the plane at >Mach speeds. Old pilot told me that when the plane was on an attack run and the bomb was armed if the plane were hit and disabled (did not say to what extent) the bomb would detonate rather than be wasted in the crash.

      BTW, New Orleans burnt down to one degree or another rather often though large numbers of the population more often succumbed to yellow fever. Shortly after the city was heavily fireproofed it fell prey to a Rat infestation it’s still laboring under today.

      This spying on Trump may go back, to that favor he did for Papa Bush1 early ’80s for those workers from Poland. Also Trump survived that assassination attempt, and his top management people ended up in the Hudson from that helicopter crash……….

      And if someone could explain this song and it’s lyrics to me, it would be greatly appreciated. I’ve heard it a million times. Can’t stand it, Puzz. Only because I can’t understand it at all. It’s like any Phish song to me. Like a musical Jackson Pollock painting. I just don’t get it at all.

        From Wikipedia: The lyrics written in the first-person, are about a traveler’s experiences arriving, visiting, and departing a town called Nazareth. According to Robertson, this is based on Nazareth, Pennsylvania because it was the home of Martin Guitars. He wrote the guitar parts on a 1951 Martin.The singers, led by Helm, vocalize the traveler’s encounters with people in the town from the perspective of a Bible Belt American Southerner, like Helm himself, a native of rural Arkansas.

        The Band’s music (to me) has always been more at Southern Rock/Folk than rock and roll. When I said best years of my life/the good old days… well, I do remember MOST of the time back then, lol… Never did make it to Woodstock though.

        But I never will see the “art” factor in a Jackson Pollock painting, either – que sera, sera, sings Doris Day…

        Hey, Wooly, found something that adds a whole lot to that Robertson version of The Weight but fills out or details the song in a way that every word (to me, anyway) tells a deeper story. It’s from a website called straightdope.com and is from 2012:

        I’ll take a stab at this and am doing so purely from memory without looking up the lyrics.

        I always thought the narrator was about to die and meets various characters along the way on their similar journey.

        The first stanza, pulling into Nazareth, looking for a place to lay his head (die) he comes across a stranger and is basically asking, “Is this it? Is this the promised land?” The stranger says nothing, shakes his hand and says, “No” as in “Sorry pal, no such place exists.”

        Second verse, Carmen and the devil. The narrator tries to save Carmen “Come on let’s go downtown” but evidently, it’s everyone for him/herself as Carmen says, “I’m going my own way, hang out with him (the devil) if you’d like, I’m out of here.”

        Third verse, he encounters Luke waiting alone for Judgment Day. The narrator asks about some other person -Anna Lee- and shouldn’t Luke be tending to her / keeping her company? Luke’s reply, “Oh yeah, can you take care of that one for me?”

        Fourth verse, Crazy Chester offers to tend to the narrator’s rags (his corpse I always figured) if he can take his dog with him. That is, the dog is old needs to be put down, you’re heading to the same place, how about it? The narrator replies, I can’t do that, “I’m a peaceful man” to which Chester says, well you can just let him slip away / starve to death by “feed[ing] him when you can”.

        Fifth verse. Back or bag is sinking low and now it’s time to die. The narrator is getting back to Miss Fannie, who has already passed and is the only one who actually knows what happens at this moment. That Weight / outcome has now been passed on to the narrator.

    About 18 months ago a routine blood panel showed my cholesterol level had spiked to a point where blood I donated had a fat level just south of cream cheese. After 18 months of controlling it I got it back down to a nice normal level.
    Celebrated by going to my fav restaurant and getting a handmade Italian sausage, pepperoni, black olive pizza with extra cheese. Yep, I did…why even bother, eh? Sheesh.

        Possibly, but watching that huge, hand-tossed, store-made sauce with real cheese and not ‘cheese product’ crawl slowly thru that super hot tunnel oven just makes my heart throb. This place makes superb red sauces and their pizzas make national chain pizzas slink away in shame.

          If you ever get to SH, MI, go to Brix Corner Oven (and Filling Station).

          Huge wood-fired pizza oven central to the kitchen, which used to be a gas station service garage, way back in the 60s. It’s on a slab so we had to jackhammer trenches for all the necessary drainage. That was fun. The place rocks all summer long. Two bars, one inside, one outside, and lots of outdoor seating.

          Watching the oven guy makes you realize that you have to be insane to work in a busy kitchen. He’s got a 8′ pizza peel, which should have a little red boxing glove on the back end of it, because everyone moving around him has to have cat-like reflexes, because he’s using it constantly, to cook 20 things in one oven, all at once.

          I painted the floors there, with a one-part epoxy, but the kitchen floor will never hold paint, not ever. Two months after, it was a mess, lots of it peeled off. Even after I etched with muriatic acid — real scary product. That concrete is basically drenched with oil, after so many years as a service station. Former bossman needs to put some Durock™ down, tap-conned into the floor, and go from there with tiles. He listens to his workers, but it takes a few years for him to digest what he listens to.

          …but really, really good pizza, though. Everything is house-made. And all the beer is Michigan craft brew, on tap.

            Looks great, craftbrew is a personal fav too – have a GABF multi-award winner in the family as it is. We were looking at a 1000-degree pizza franchise a while back but having to move back to the Great Swamp and our distinct possibility of eating up the profits made us reconsider.

        Not asvif I had a lotta choices. Just like my diabetes, I mostly took control into my own hands and have pushed my A1C into the normal zone and kept it there for three years.
        Don’t know what happened with the cholesterol, it was just a hair into the high range for years but one day the blood center called me after a donation and said I might want to check with my doc as my total cholesterol level was over 450. Neither my docs could figure out why it had jumped and their only recourse was statins. As it turned out, I am sensitive to statins so I justntook it into mymown gand, changed my diet, increased my activity and intake of fiber and put large phytosterol doses into my daily regimen. So far my levels have dtopped on every six month test panel.
        Remember when those pharma drug pushers told us that statins were God’s gift to the world, so safe they should be put into the water supply? So far a few have been removed from the market and new side effects are popping up all over. Now there’s a ‘newer and safer’ family of them that promise to solve our cholesterol problems once and for all. Doc who tried to get me to beta test them ain’t with me no mo’.

    Czar, our locals caught us one night, late at night, when in our late teens and early 20s. We were driving, in my car, looking for a place to smoke a few doobs. We settled on a golf course parking lot that we frequented for such activity.

    All night a non-smoker buddy of ours, who happened to drive a Ford LTD Crown Victoria, had been following us high-schoolers and ex-high-schoolers around.

    Crown Vic pulls up, I roll down the window, much smoke pours out, and I yell, “Hey, man! What’s up, dude!”

    I hear, as the MagLite is aimed at my face, “Hey man, license and registration.” He’s coughing and waving away the smoke.

    Whoops. They get us all out of the car. Cop tells me, the driver, to give him what we have. I give him the Marlboro pack with the three tiny joints in it. He then tells me: We’re gonna search this car, and if we find anything else, you’re going to jail.

    I said: Okay. There’s one more. It’s in the glove compartment.

    They opened it carefully, and found PJ 2. The People’s Joint. (written in Sharpie) 9″x1 1/2″. You could play the drums (and we did) with this thing. They almost fell on the ground laughing. They let all us white potheads go, and I wonder to this day whether it’s framed under glass at the cop shop, or whether they all partook.

        Fact is, our crowd was actually very peaceful. The local constabulatory knew it. They knew what we were doing was illegal, but they also knew that they had bigger fish to fry, so to speak. They saw us parked in dirt parking lots next to the subway tracks, late at night, parked literally one inch away from each other, five cars in a line, passing joints from car one to car five and back….

        …and they waved hi.

        Our presence in that near-inner-city parking lot was a boon to them, because since we teenagers started hanging out their in our cars, there was less crime in that lot. Potential hookers, johns, dealers, cokeheads, etc… They would drive in, and drive out after they saw our crew. Just because we were there, sitting in our cars, listening to The Doors.

          Cops were awesome to us, our crew, not because we were white, but because we were awesome to them. We called them “brother” and not “SuRR”-with-a-smirk.

      We used to have an officer who used to smoke his joints on-duty and in the patrol car. If you rode with him you’d have all the unit’s windows down, even in winter, as the dar would reek of dope.

        When I used to hang out with my uncle — before he succumbed to various cancers a few years ago — the EMS/fire guy, every other day, when we weren’t dragging deer out of the woods or chopping firewood, we were sitting in his living room watching either COPS, M*A*S*H, or some Rescue 911-type show, and he would be pointing out all the B.S., while we smoked doobies. A former chief of police would come by every now and then and join us, who used to toss me up in the air and catch me when I was two. Great guy.

          COPS is realish. They hand-pick the officers to be on the show, ones that clean up well. I still watch episides from pre-Katrina NOPD where I see officers apprehending suspects, after a chase and/or a scuffle, and give them fatherly advice on the evil in their ways. There is very little doubt that, had the cameras not been there, the situation would have unfolded differently. A case of what we want to see versus what we want to happen.

            Indeed. The cooking “reality” shows are the same, and when me and chef deign to watch them, we see all the edits clearly. And hear all the ominous “oh-noes!” music that is inserted to add dramatic effect.

      His military family must be so proud. This guy was attending the same schools and living in the same town as many of my family members. It’s very conservative area. It really makes you wonder what causes someone to do a total 180 like that. Just evil.

    So Dh has three more days of the immune globulins. He was feeling much better this morning, I brought him our normal coffee from home. It is a slow day, but I can watch stuff on my tablet. We will be doing little walks on and off all day. Hopefully the neurologist can give us some insight. It could have been so much worse.

      This is pretty much what the “Russia Interfered” crowd has said all along. An operative working openly for Russia did not hand the Podesta emails over to Wikileaks but Russia used an intermediary as a go between so Assange was not aware that it was Russia who was supplying him with the emails.

        The full article at GP seemed to say that by answering the question it proves no Russian involvement at any point and that Comey actually admitting that was a big deal that nobody seemed to catch. It will be nice when the whole thing is put to rest, but that and Trump’s taxes are all the Dems want to talk about. I guess Maddow’s little faux pas last week has at least squelched the taxes thing for now.

          I think we just have a different interpretation of the GWP article or maybe just I have a different interpretation of what Comey said than does the GWP.

          Comey is sharp as tack and he used double speak through he whole hearing. I really believe Comey was simply saying that Russia used an intermediary between Assange and the State. Assange in his interview with Sean Hannity said that he does not ask his sources where they get their information from.

          Anyhow IMO this would relentless attack would bring any other Republican President down. President Trump seems to inhale it and come back stronger because he is fearless in his counterpunches and solid in his assessments of certain situations. Way back when he was candidate Trump he would say “I know these people better than they know themselves.” Every time he said that I smiled to myself.

          I’m still under the impression that POTUS has an ace up his sleeve when it comes to his wire tapping claims.

            I agree totally about Trump having the upper hand here. He has to play his cards close to his vest and roll with it, then lower the boom at just the right moment. It would be excellent if the info he has totally discredit all those who have been falsely accusing him.

              That is certainly the way it looks. The whole Russian thing is a lie. Comey has zero integrity and the Russians passing the Podesta/DNC emails to Wikileaks is as believable as a video causing the death of 4 Americans in Benghazi.

              Comey is danger as he lies with as much ease and smugness as the Clintons.

      He’s a Louisiana Senator that hasn’t been caught with his hand in the cookie jar…yet. He’s conservative on all of the conservative issue of import, as are all Louisiana conservative Senators. It generally takes a few years in office for the ‘investigative reporters’ to fing out what is going on underbthe covers elsewhere for La pols, Rat or conservative, but on issues near and dear to the state’s grassroots conservstives he’ll toe the line.
