This is an old quiz (to me, at least), but a good one. Some might say a hard one. Try not to cheat, and rely on what’s between your ears!
Here we go:
This test does not measure intelligence, your fluency with words, creativity or mathematical ability. It will, however, give you some gauge of your mental flexibility. In the years since the test was developed, few people have been found who could solve more than half of the 26 questions on the first try. Many, however, reported getting answers long after the testing had been set aside, particularly at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed. Some reported solving all the questions over a period of several days. Take the test as your personal challenge.
Instructions: Each equation below contains the initials of words that will make it meaningful. Furnish the missing words. For example: 60 M in an H. – would be 60 minutes in an hour.
- 26 L of the A
- 7 W of the W
- 1001 A N
- 12 S of the Z
- 54 C in a D (with the J)
- 9 P in the SS
- 88 P K
- 13 S on the A F
- 32 D F at which W F
- 8 S on a SS
- 200 D for P G in M
- 3 B M (S H T R)
- 90 D in a R A
- 4 Q in a G
- 24 H in a D
- 1 W on a U
- 5 D in a Z C
- 57 H V
- 11 P on a F T
- 1000 – W that a P is W
- 29 D in F in a L Y
- 64 S on a C
- 40 D and N of G F
- A the W in 80 D
- 2 – # it T to T
- 101 D
I’ll supply the answers some time later. Don’t cheat!!!
Trivia. Puzzles like this are called “ditloids”.
A ditloid is a type of word puzzle, in which a phrase, quotation, date, or fact must be deduced from the numbers and abbreviated letters in the clue. Common words such as ‘the’, ‘in’, ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘of’, ‘to’, etc. are not normally abbreviated. The name ‘ditloid’ was given by the Daily Express newspaper, originating from the clue: 1 = DitLoID ≡ 1 Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

Oh, dear. The minute I saw the combo of #s and letters my brain said – cannot do. I’d like to try but I’m afraid I’ll pull a stitch somewhere that I might need. Now I will read on and see on the rest of you did!

As I was going to Saint Ives,
I crossed the path of seven wives.
Every wife had seven sacks,
Every sack had seven cats,
Every cat had seven kittens,
Kittens, cats, sacks, wives,
How many were going to Saint Ives?

I’m giving up. This is what I have so far. Two of my answers don’t make sense to me. What this has really done is illustrate how dirty my mind is. I see sex references everywhere. Too much internet culture, I guess…

And I believe it was 40 days and nights of the great flood ( from the bible)

Yeah, that’s what I was going for, but it isn’t right. It rained for forty days and forty nights, but the flood lasted for 150 days.

Genesis 7
Then YHWH said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and female, to keep their kind alive upon the face of all the earth. For in seven days I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.”

The waters prevailed 150 days, but the rain continued for 40 days and 40 nights. Please don’t split hairs over a silly quiz. I didn’t write the questions.

Right, I know, and I’m not nitpicking with you.
It was one of the reasons I had issues with that question. The rain is not the flood. The flood waters having risen is the flood. There are several others that are poorly worded, too, if I got them right (the football one, particularly).

We used to sing a song about the flood.. in grade school…
……
“It rained and rained for 40 daysies, daysies
rained and rained for 40 daysies, daysies,
Nearly drove the (clap) animals crazy, crazy.
Children of the lord…
The sun came out and dried up the landy, landy
sun came out and dried up the landy, landy
Every thing was (clap) fine and dandy, dandy
Children of the lord!!!”
