The Quiz (Rerun)

This is an old quiz (to me, at least), but a good one.  Some might say a hard one.  Try not to cheat, and rely on what’s between your ears!

Brain

Here we go:

This test does not measure intelligence, your fluency with words, creativity or mathematical ability. It will, however, give you some gauge of your mental flexibility. In the years since the test was developed, few people have been found who could solve more than half of the 26 questions on the first try. Many, however, reported getting answers long after the testing had been set aside, particularly at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed. Some reported solving all the questions over a period of several days. Take the test as your personal challenge.

Instructions: Each equation below contains the initials of words that will make it meaningful. Furnish the missing words. For example: 60 M in an H. – would be 60 minutes in an hour.

  1. 26 L of the A
  2. 7 W of the W
  3. 1001 A N
  4. 12 S of the Z
  5. 54 C in a D (with the J)
  6. 9 P in the SS
  7. 88 P K
  8. 13 S on the A F
  9. 32 D F at which W F
  10. 8 S on a SS
  11. 200 D for P G in M
  12. 3 B M (S H T R)
  13. 90 D in a R A
  14. 4 Q in a G

Trivia. Puzzles like this are called “ditloids”.

A ditloid is a type of word puzzle, in which a phrase, quotation, date, or fact must be deduced from the numbers and abbreviated letters in the clue. Common words such as ‘the’, ‘in’, ‘a’, ‘an’, ‘of’, ‘to’, etc. are not normally abbreviated. The name ‘ditloid’ was given by the Daily Express newspaper, originating from the clue: 1 = DitLoID ≡ 1 Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

Yeah, that’s what I was going for, but it isn’t right. It rained for forty days and forty nights, but the flood lasted for 150 days.

          Genesis 7

Then YHWH said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and female, to keep their kind alive upon the face of all the earth. For in seven days I will send rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.”

            Genesis 7:11-24

11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. 12And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, 14they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. 15They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.

17The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. 19And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. 20The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. 21And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. 22Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. 23He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. 24And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.

The waters prevailed 150 days, but the rain continued for 40 days and 40 nights. Please don’t split hairs over a silly quiz. I didn’t write the questions.

Right, I know, and I’m not nitpicking with you.

It was one of the reasons I had issues with that question. The rain is not the flood. The flood waters having risen is the flood. There are several others that are poorly worded, too, if I got them right (the football one, particularly).
