Voter registration in the United States largely reflects its 19th-century origins and has not kept pace with advancing technology and a mobile society. States’ systems must be brought into the 21st century to be more accurate, cost-effective, and efficient.
Research commissioned by the Pew Center on the States highlights the extent of the
challenge:
♦ Approximately 24 million—one of every eight—voter registrations in the United States are no longer valid or are significantly inaccurate.
♦ More than 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters.
♦ Approximately 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state.
Meanwhile, researchers estimate at least 51 million eligible U.S. citizens are unregistered, or more than 24 percent of the eligible population.
Then there is this, regarding illegals voting. I’m quoting from John Nolte over at the The Daily Wire (I’ve run out of free access at the Wapo this month), who quotes a Wapo article from 2014 about a serious study of illegal aliens who are registered to vote, and who may have voted in 2008 and 2010 (the link to the Washington Post is included in the Daily Wire article):

How many non-citizens participate in U.S. elections? More than 14 percent of non-citizens in both the 2008 and 2010 samples indicated that they were registered to vote. Furthermore, some of these non-citizens voted. Our best guess, based upon extrapolations from the portion of the sample with a verified vote, is that 6.4 percent of non-citizens voted in 2008 and 2.2 percent of non-citizens voted in 2010.
Because non-citizens tended to favor Democrats (Obama won more than 80 percent of the votes of non-citizens in the 2008 CCES sample), we find that this participation was large enough to plausibly account for Democratic victories in a few close elections.
It is a fascinating study based on something called “self-reporting,” which means that non-citizens admitted to voting illegally.
NOLTE: My problem is that Phil Rucker and Jake Tapper and PolitiFact, and all of the rest of the national media, are trying to snuff out debate by LYING.
Outright, flat-out LYING.
LYING through omission by completely ignoring this study.
LYING through commission with their fraudulent claims that Trump has “no evidence.”
That is a LIE. This study is evidence.
What problems do we have, in my opinion?
- In many states, no proof of citizenship is required for voter registration. All that is needed, usually, is an I.D. such as a driver’s license.
- In some states, such as California, illegal aliens are allowed to obtain a legal driver’s license. From there, it is fairly simple to register to vote.
- Since January of 2016, five states have adopted fully automatic (opt-out) voter registration systems as part of the process of issuing driver licenses and ID cards. Those states are Oregon, California, West Virginia, Vermont, and Connecticut.
- Voter identification is not required in all states. By August 2016, federal rulings in five cases have overturned all or parts of voter registration or voter ID laws in Ohio, Texas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and North Dakota that were found to place undue burden on minorities and other groups among voters. Some of these rulings may be appealed to the Supreme Court. Currently, 18 states, plus D.C., do not require identification of any kind to vote. The remaining states have a variety of requirements of strict and non-strict non-photo ID, and strict and non-strict photo ID.
- More than 2.7 million people are registered in more than one state (Pew study, effective 2011). Much of this is because of antiquated paper-based registration systems, and a more mobile society than existed 100 years ago.
- Persons who live at two different addresses, even in the same state (such as full-time students) sometimes intentionally register in both places, and vote twice.
- About two million dead persons are still registered to vote (Pew Study).
President Trump is correct. A comprehensive study is needed to define the problem once and for all, allowing a sensible plan of action on the Federal level governing national elections. I hope that if rules for Federal elections are developed and enforced, the states will follow suit, although this may be a vain hope for states like California and Oregon.

Ditto. I am probably registered in two states… because I moved… no one explained about un registering… I didn’t bother. Of course I only voted in my legal residence state.. but still….

In the last 20 years I have lived in 4 states. I didn’t unregister in any of them. I wouldn’t even know how.

Both those previous states and the jurisdiction you lived in should have ‘registrars’ you can contact and they have the details. I not only called I went fown and msde sure they removed me. Louisiana has an on-line system thst also lets one check.
Yes, unscrupulous (as if thry cone in any other flavor) pols can still abuse the system as the old time proven system is still in place there. Feelings are that if you cared you’d make sure your name was purged, you don’t care you were fair game.
BTW, until about the mid-90s, Louisiana sold voter’s private information to anyone who wanted it, including uou DOB and SSN.

Even within the state when you move to a different county they screw up. Once, they wouldn’t let me vote because I was registered in two counties and another time I discovered on my own I was registered in two counties. What I was told was that it was a screw up on their part when I sent in my voter registration change instead of removing me in the previous county they just added me to the new county.

BTW I heard that the driver’s licenses issues to non documented people have to clealy indicate that they are not to be used for voter registration…THere isn’t much of a difference.. a couple words that say Fed Limits Apply…

There are loopholes, because the system relies on self reporting, and I hear that if you don’t report one way or the other**, they will register you to vote in California. Did you read the SD article next door about California? It is based on a report we received via email from a person working in IT in California. Asked not to use the name, of course.
** ADD: To clarify, if you ‘forget’ to check the box stating you are a citizen, they put the application for voter registration through anyway.

The Obama administration pulled a last minute move to designate state elections systems as “critical infrastructure,” via a Department of Homeland Security directive — a move that would federalize elections.
Fortunately, all fifty state secretaries of state stood up and said no to this huge overreach by urging the Trump administration to do away with it.
Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson made the disturbing move on Jan. 6 on the wave of the Obama administration and the Left’s propaganda campaign on supposed Russian hacking during the 2016 election.
Johnson’s official proclamation on the matter was truly chilling. He said: “I have determined that election infrastructure in this country should be designated as a subsector of the existing Government Facilities critical infrastructure sector.”

I can remember back in the early 70s that the part-year Florida, part-year NY/NJ folks voted and had D/Ls in both states. State had a sort of halfarsed interest in dealing with it but NY and NJ would delay cooperating and state would just shelve the plan. After all, they spent lotsa money there so what else was important?

Interesting point, it may or may not be related… but starting my tax returns, the state of SC requires your DL number if you claim to be a full time resident. There are a bunch of part timers here…

Different states have different requirements and different clerks in different offices have different values. We have had more than one Louisiana D/L office worker zapped for selling D/Ls and I don’t mean just a few licences.
In the old days in FL you just turned in uour out-of-state D/L for a FL one. State didn’t bother checking your old state but didn’t really have to as they had your old D/L in hand. you’d go back to your old state, tell DMV you lost your licence, thry’d check to make sure it was good and viola, two licenses in two states.
Things under Fed oversight post-911 are tougher but for those already holding thongs should ho OK if they work the system and those interested in getting around the new rules will find a way.

My bottom line, is if you want to vote, to participate in our democracy, you should be prepared to prove you are a citizen and thus eligible. Checking a box on a form is not ok… not any more.

CNN whining and wringing hands over Trump firing State Department official in the bureau that protects the safety of US citizens and the embassies overseas. Noting the fired bureaucrats have over 150 years of combined knowledge and that appointees and others who do not wish to work with the incoming POTUS are usually allowed to resign they ignore the FACT that there are plenty of trained others who can do that job and if we look at the attacks on US embassies, consulates and citizens overseas it appears that more competent personnel are required.

CNN whining over Trump allegedly allowing CIA to reopen black sites and ‘torture’ captives. I suggest that the POTUS meet the progs half way by handcuffing the captives, taping five 20-dollar bills to each and dropping them off in any public housing project in any major US city.
