One of my few really healthy habits is that I almost never drink sodas. But I loathe Pepsi. If I’m going to drink poison, let it be Coke.

I’ll just stick to my fruit and vegetable smoothies. I don’t trust whatever else they might have in those things, and I also don’t trust that they actually do have the good stuff they are supposed to.

When I was a kid my dad and his brothers used to visit the grandparents in their small Kansas town, which meant a horde of us cousins. We used to walk to the old drug store downtown and my dad would buy us all a coke or a scoop of ice cream, both a nickel. We almost filled the stools at the soda fountain. Good memories!

I remember when there was a thin circular cork glued to underside of soda bottle caps (likely Pepsi because that is what my aunt drank) you would peel the cork off with the pointy side of a bottle/can opener and you could wing something. Money?

If you like fruity (as in taste, not personal lifestyle ) drinks, when in New Orleans go to Port of Call on Esplanade Avenue. They make huge fruity getting-happy drinks with lots and lots of alcohols in them. Also make super huge burgers and steaks with perfectly baked potatoes. Damage you liver and heart in one sitting, convenient and well worth it.
If dining area’s filled you can get a drink and hang out on the sidewalk with the rest of the waiting crowd.

I live close enough to the tracks to hear the trains. My windows are closed though.

We live a fair distance from the tracks, but still hear the whistle occasionally. My three year old grandson calls it the ghost train.

Me too. I can’t imagine why the sound of a train is so wonderful in the still of evening or night, but something in it calls to us apparently.
I still wish I lived near a creek though. I love going up into the mountains and finding a rushing mountain stream.

The overflow pipe on our lake’s been running like mad for days since the rains. Water’s been flowing out over the top and dropping to the rocks ten feet below in a steady roar, you can hear it during the day but at night it is THE background noise when you’re outside. I compare that to the background noises when I’m in New Orleans…no comparison.

When we were smoking and drinking on the deck, at night or early in mornings when foggy, we could hear the boats/ships on the Puget Sound and the trains just to the South of the Downtown core.

I woke this morning to my favorite morning sight, heavy fog surrounding the hillside cabin. I love sitting on the back porch looking right out into the fog creeping right up to the eaves of the house.

Tundra, it’s mid seventies right now. It was probably almost 60 this morning, plenty warm enough to enjoy the fog and coffee. When we first moved here we used to put our coats on every night and go out on the back porch to watch the sunset. You can only see it through the trees in the winter.

Of the four houses I lived in as a kid in Iowa, three were closer than two hundred yards to railroad tracks and two were on the wrong side of the tracks.

We’re about 6 miles from the tracks so we get the low frequency and some mid-frequency sounds. Last night was dead still, no wind to go thru the pines and cover the sound of the train. You have to be still and listen but it’s there out in the distance, sorta calling…
We live in the South and according to the prog social engineering trash we’re ALL on the wrong side of their tracks.

Just as the first casualty of war is said to be the truth, the first casualty of the new Cold War is irony. Our most prominent journalists seem to have missed the Orwellian irony of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) asking Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper at Friday’s Senate hearings if Julian Assange has any credibility. Assange has maintained that the hacked or leaked emails of Democratic Party officials did not come from the Russian government, or any other government.
As is well-known, Clapper lied to Congress about a serious violation of the constitutional rights of tens of millions of Americans. This lie is a crime for which he actually could have been prosecuted. In March 2013, Clapper falsely answered, “No, sir” to the question, “Does the NSA [National Security Association] collect any type of data at all on millions, or hundreds of millions of Americans?”
He later admitted that his answer was untrue.
Clapper lied again in Friday’s testimony, saying that Assange was “under indictment” for “a sexual crime.” In fact, Assange has not been indicted for anything, and the government of Sweden has never even charged him with a crime. (He was initially questioned by Swedish police but allowed to leave the country.)
In reality, he is a political prisoner, and the United Nations Working Group on arbitrary detention has found that he has been arbitrarily detained since 2010 by the United Kingdom and Sweden, and ordered his release and compensation.

At first I thought it was someone authoritative making that statement then I saw it was Schumer. Trump won’t be AT WAR WITH THE INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY, as the desperate whining losers like to say, just with some segments of a few st most.
The ibtel ‘community’ isn’t some huge church of acolytes that gather to pray at the feet of the CIA director, far from it. Look how long they’ve been trying to get the various intel agencies to talk to one another and it’s still far from transparent.
You have the CIA with its director as the nominal head of the intel community but each agency has an egotistical, turf-protecting bureaucratic head sitting on its own throne and Trump will be appointing a new CIA head who’s a political insider.
The CIA is also a monolithic beast with division heads who think for themselves. They won’t all be anti-Trump, if any are. They are bureaucrats too and know the game, to find out that a peer bureaucrat is working against the POTUS would give the discoverer an eloutable advantage. There’s also organizational memory and the mess Jimmy Carter made of the Company is a mistake no one there wants to repeat. The Donald suspects the CIA’s trying to undermibe him, he appoints his version of Stansfield Turner, bad day at Langley.
I think the ‘intel in revolt’ story is yet another pipe dream by the Rats and MSM to soothe their damaged egos.

Tump must root out the political appointees, then start with ISIL initial intelligence estimates of ISIL, and the point when Obola changed sides, Benghazi, even the JCS made that conclusion…….

Low n’ slow smoked pork belly is about as close to heaven as your taste buds will ever get in this lifetime. I put a big Ol’ batch of beans underneath to soak up the drippin’s, yum! Make some cornbread in a Dutch oven with a huckleberry cobbler in the top one and you’re livin’ large right there.
Just smoked a 15 lb Prime Rib for Christmas and this weekend for the Happy Trump Day Inauguration we’re doin’ up an 18 lb Pork Loin in the WSM, apple and cherry wood methinks. Memphis Dust dry rub with a honey and fig jam glaze at the end. You got me droolin’ here…

Got a big pot ‘o red beans just finished, pinto beans are in reserve. Cornbread’s a definite, sweet cornbread with bacon in it.
Wild hogs we’ve been getting are lean and mean, no good for bacon but soon they’re going to get tested as various kinds of sausage. Apple and cherry totally in agreement, bacon needs sweet smoke.

We render our own lard (snow white) for making venison sausages since they’re so lean, Blacktail deer don’t need to fatten up here in the PNWet. Beef tallow gets used too. It’s also what we season and cook with in the the cast iron. The only problem with that is the reflection in the pans, my wife’s has a pretty lady in it and mine are always some old ugly guy.
And speaking of bacon, we used some smoked, dehydrated, Steen’s pure cane syrup coated bacon along with smoked mixed nuts in the peanut brittle this year. Major success.

Wild hogs here are lean, lean, lean – no leaf lard. Deer are that way too, too many hay bales and winter gardens to chow down on. At least the deer here don’t come ‘sage’ preseasoned like they did in Utah.
Gotta try that Steens and bacon in the peanut brittle, I love brittle and the Czarina is a Steen’s fanatic. I also mix pecans in with the peanuts.

We usually get a domestically raised hog and at least a 1/2 side of beef from our butcher every year and there’s always plenny fat for lard, rinds, and tallow. Enough to last ’til the next year anyway. He’ll give me extra fat, and bones for the dogs too. The back 40 looks like a New Orleans graveyard after the levy broke with all the bones back there.
Per the bacon peanut brittle, make twice as much as you think you need… because bacon. We did about 20 lbs of brittle for this years family Christmas get together and it was gone before I got the Prime Rib done. And your Czarina obviously has excellent taste, we buy Steen’s by the case.

We have two real butchers, one of whom runs an abattoir, but we generally buy,beef piecemeal as we feel like it. We’re big on pork and birds and for last six months we.’ve been stuffing wild hogs into the freezers.
No deer yet, logging at the neighbors have stirred and moved them but I should have some does coming back in to feed on my garden and hay. Not much of a buck hunter, I prefer to harvest does as there’s a shortage of bucks sonce they seem to be the trophy animals. Does will stay in heat until mated and the shortage of bucks means you can see does with blanketed fawns well into late summer. No hurry, I’m waiting fir the deer who ate my collards, they’ll be back….

Ugh. My buckwheat waffle attempt was a disaster.
Usually the waffle just about falls out of my Teflon coated Belgian waffle iron, but despite my usual thick coating of melted butter on the iron, the buckwheat batter stuck so badly the waffle split in half when I opened the iron, and it took half an hour to pry everything out. No piece was any bigger than a half dollar.
So I fried up two thick slices of bacon in my Teflon frying pan and fried up the rest of the batter as pancakes in the bacon grease. They were great. 🙂

The buckwheat is a bit viscous and, if you used yeast, it doesn’t have much gluten, so you won’t get a big rise. My pancakes turned out great.

I’d try a tiny bit of baking soda, and a tiny bit of baking powder.
My former b’fast joint has a really good oatmeal pancake, and if you forgot the baking soda, it was quite flat, no fluff.

The rise was fine; it just stuck like crazy to the teflon. I’m thinking maybe 3:30 was too long of a cook time, though it was fine with a stiffer batter with no buckwheat.
The recipe I used:
1/2 cup whole wheat durum atta flour (from a Persian grocery store, in the “Exotic foods” section where they have the foods from India)
1 cup buckwheat flour
1/4 tspn salt
2 1/4 tspn yeast
pinch of ginger
pinch of cinnamon
2 Tbspn sugar
1 egg
about 12 ounces of milk, just enough to make the batter easily pourable.
2 Tbspn olive oil
In the evening, in a bowl big enough to hold the risen batter, whisk the dry ingredients. In a separate container (I use a pyrex 2 cup measuring cup), whisk the wet ingredients, then pour the wet into the dry and whisk well. Tap the bottom of the bowl with a fingernail and note the pitch. Cover and put in the fridge overnight. In the morning, tap the bottom of the bowl again. The pitch should be noticeable lower, indicating the presence of tiny bubbles in the batter from the work of the yeast. The bowl should be more full, too, as the batter should have expanded. If not, let it set at room temp a while.
I always stock whole wheat flour, seldom having white flour on hand. The whole wheat durum is yellow, like pasta, which is made from durum wheat, which is higher in protein.
Yeast like ginger and cinnamon.

This is what I just made (call it brunch). I like the addition of the rolled oats:
Buckwheat pancakes
“This pancake is chock-full of healthy goodness with a healthy dose of taste. Serve with butter or margarine and lots of Vermont maple syrup.”
Ingredients
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup buckwheat flour
1/4 cup rolled oats
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup milk (I used a combo of whole milk and buttermilk)
3 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg, lightly beaten
(I didn’t this time, and the recipe didn’t call for it, but I would add some salt)
Directions
In a large bowl, stir together wheat flour, buckwheat flour, oats, and baking powder. Stir in milk, oil, honey, and egg.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides, and serve hot.

I try to keep at least a pint of whole fat buttermilk around for cooking/baking. My mother loved to drink it, but she remembered it from the farm when she was a kid.
PS: I also keep powdered buttermilk in the pantry for baking.

What I buy now is cultured buttermilk (made from regular milk). What my mother drank was traditional buttermilk, which is what is left after churning butter.

I make my own fake buttermilk as needed by putting a dollop of sour cream, about 4 to 6 tablespoons of plain yogurt (always on hand) in a cup measure and filling it up with regular milk.

We get REAL buttermilk from our local dairy. It’s sold out within hours of delivery and they can’t make enough of it. The little country store/gas station in the middle of nowhere gets calls on delivery day asking if it’s in yet.

I don’t think Obama wants to stay a day longer in the White House than he has to and neither does Michelle. Unless Soros or other PTB demand war I think it is Obama leaving the country in as big of a mess as possible before Trump takes office.
Obama is delusional so it is somewhat hard to tell what the heck he is thinking but his legacy is the most important thing to his ego, so far he has imagined his legacy to be something that it is demonstrably not but I believe he honestly believes his view of himself and his assessment of the state of the country. I can’t imagine that he wants a war with Russia in the history books attached to his name. If Obama gets out of office with the US on the brink of war with Russia in his mind he will have succeeded.
Obama and his puppet master’s hope seems to be a) delegitimize Trump’s presidency b) attach Russia to Trump’s victory c) spit in the face of Russia on the way out the door d) hope there is war with Russia and blame Trump. Sully both Trump and Pence with the Russian allegations and hope to replace them with Ryan who is a a sycophant of the Bush/Soros cabal.

I hope you are right. You make a lot of sense. I think that is a good point that Obama doesn’t want to be connected with another war. But, I think if he brings us to the brink, Trump can put a stop to that. It is just amazing the lengths all these people and groups are willing to go to against Trump.

I can’t imagine they do. They are unprepared. This is all happening at the seat of their pants because they all thought that Hillary was going to be president and she came with the same puppet strings as Obama. So I will stick with what I have said all along this is all about leaving the world in as much chaos as possible and delegitimizing Trump’s presidency. That is the card they have to play right now.
I know many of us are praying for Trump’s physical safety. The powers of vast fortunes are at risk, world powers are being pushed, this was never a possibly in the mind of the oligarchs and they have to regain their footing.

Now this BDE does have force protection ability. And will not be anywhere close to Poland/Russian border. Now the Russians would gain more intelligence just listening to Commutations, and daily information flowing in and out of the command structure. This part of Poland is great Tank Country…… I wish the boys/girls well, and be safe…..

I’m just a civilian reading the psyche of Obama (and his pattern of behavior) and the powers that lost. I don’t think they had a contingency in place for a Trump victory which is why we are seeing such chaotic resistance with every Lib singing from a different page. They seem to be settling on Russia elected Trump for the moment even though that has already fallen apart.
PS I will always defer to you or Czar on anything military 🙂

It’s 4K of US troops in a NATO deployment. The largest amount of US troops there in about 21 years. I didn’t read anything about the other NATO members that are deploying as well, but from the Russian response I read it’s not just US solders there.
I’d like to think it’s just some last minute stick poking through the fence before the grownups knock children’s heads together.

It would be pretty difficult to stop the inauguration. After all, the only essential part is the oath of office, and that can be administered by any Federal judge. One could argue that any judge would do. Look at LBJ’s “inauguration” on AF1 in Dallas. Calvin Coolidge was sworn in by his father, a notary public, at their home in Vermont.
Trump’s election has already been certified by Congress.

So they’re shocked so much is spent on soda? I think most of us could have told them this, we’ve all been behind them in line and watch all the soda, chips, frozen pizzas, cupcakes, donuts, etc. get bagged up.
Our brilliant government at work though, spend $100 million to try and get them to buy healthy food because it would take too much red tape to restrict foods.
I’m sorry poor people should not get to choose what food they buy, when we are having to buy it. When they can spend their own money I agree people can and should buy and eat what they want, but when they spend our money beggars can’t be choosers.

Just yesterday I ran into Walgreens to pick up something. the couple in front of me, maybe in their mid twenties, had $38 worth of soda and paid for it with their food stamp card.

It always ticks me off, because rarely do they have real food in their basket.
Then I really get ticked if I walk out into the parking lot and see them getting into a new vehicle.
Usually that’s after watching kids too young to need a phone to begin with playing on their phone while Mom is scrolling away on the latest I-phone.

I was behind a woman on a scooter one day. She had a boy who looked to be about nine or ten who was pushing the basket. He unloaded numerous bottles of pepsi and mountain dew, and frozen pizza, pizza rolls, breakfast meals and tv dinners, pop tarts and chips. They had so many bags of chips I asked the boy if he was having a party. He told me, “no we only buy groceries once a week.”
He was overweight, which is not surprising, she was morbidly obese, although she was telling the cashier how she was disabled and couldn’t walk because of leg diseases and she couldn’t breathe and needed oxygen.
I was standing there listening to her thinking how all of her problems were a symptom of her obesity.
The government would have been doing her and her son a favor if she could only buy food she actually had to cook. All she did was complain to the cashier about how the government doesn’t give her enough food stamps to last the month for her and her son and only gives her $800 check to live on and it doesn’t cover all her bills.
She asked for help getting herself and her groceries to the car so she had to wait for someone. I went out about the same time as they did and she had a wheelchair vehicle, which made me wonder if we paid for it as well.

The thing is WIC allows only certain foods, Food stamps doesn’t cover hot foods or non food items so making it so the food card cannot pay for soda, candy, ice-cream, or any butcher item that costs over a certain amount a pound and the like, doesn’t seem like it should be that difficult.
