Multiple people are dead from a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in Florida, the Broward County Sheriff said.
A suspect is in custody, a senior federal official said, and at least nine people were injured in the shooting Friday.
The airport said the incident occurred in the baggage claim area of the airport’s Terminal 2, which was evacuated.

I read a short blurb earlier (which appears to have been pulled) from one of the individuals in the baggage area who stated that the shooter was laying on the floor, spread eagled and shooting.

Terrible! It’s our favorite airport, much better than Miami International, and we always considered it safe and well organized. One does not have to be muslim to be a terrorist in South Florida. We have an assortment of Che admirers from several countries.

The guy was apparently an Air Canada passenger, who had a gun in his checked baggage.

Yes, I got that too, and the Hispanic name as well, but it doesn’t mean anything.

They say he has a military id, but I didn’t hear if it was U.S. military. His name is Cuban, isn’t it? Esteban Santiago.

Hispanic, but not necessarily Cuban, and again, who says it’s his real name or id?

Esteban Santiago ID’d as Airport Gunman; Flew With Gun in Checked Luggage
Fort Lauderdale attacker has a criminal record and flew in to Florida from Canada with a pistol.

Esteban Santiago, 26, of Anchorage, Alaska, has been identified as the gunman who opened fire at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday.
Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca wrote on Facebook that Santiago landed at the airport after a flight. Santiago checked a handgun in his luggage and retrieved it at the Terminal 2 baggage claim, LaMaca wrote, adding that he loaded the gun in a bathroom then came out and opened fire. NBC News, citing law enforcement officials, confirmed LaMarca’s story.
Santiago was taken alive into custody. Five people were killed and eight people were wounded by Santiago, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.
Santiago was born in New Jersey, according to NBC News, and was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard. ABC News reports Santiago was honorably discharged from the National Guard approximately four months ago.

What the heck, you can have a gun in your checked baggage? I left Germany in 1978. I had a .357 that I was transporting back to the U.S. I had to have it pre cleared. I had to have a permit in the U.S. to have it stateside. No ammo what so ever was allowed. The weapon had to be in a locked gun case and deposited with the pilot in the cockpit! It took me 45 minutes after we landed to retrieve it. They had us exit through a separate location from other passengers.
I can’t carry a pocket knife on the plane, but I can have a weapon and ammo in checked luggage?
WTH. TSA is a joke.

Also, in the airports I have been through, no armed police officers in baggage claim area.

You can have a declared, licensed gun, but it has to be in a LOCKED container in your CHECKED baggage. This was to prevent firearms from being in the passenger area of the airline during flight.
Can’t recall anyone ever speculating “what if…?” in regards to the baggage claim area. OF COURSE the gun is now accessible after you have picked up your luggage. I guess it is only surprising that this sort of thing hasn’t happened before.

Ft. Lauderdale Fighter Claimed He Was Being ‘Forced to Fight for ISIS’
http://www.truthrevolt.org/news/ft-lauderdale-fighter-claimed-he-was-being-forced-fight-isis
Pamela Geller is reporting that the Ft. Lauderdale shooter today was previously known to the FBI, and that in November he had walked into an FBI office in Anchorage, Alaska claiming he was being forced to fight for ISIS.
PamelaGeller.com reports that “The Fort Lauderdale gunman was known to FBi for four months prior to this massacre”:
Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca told CBS4 the shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a checked gun. He says the shooter claimed his bag at the baggage claim area then took the gun from his bag before going into a bathroom and loading his weapon. He then reportedly came out of the bathroom and began shooting people in the baggage claim area.
Law Enforcement sources told CBSNews that in Nov. 2016, he walked into an FBI office in Anchorage, AK claiming he was being forced to fight for ISIS but was sent to a psychiatric hospital after Anchorage police were called. In 2011 or 2012, he was investigated for child porn. Three weapons and a computer were seized but there was not enough evidence to prosecute.
Air Canada took to Twitter to deny they had the accused gunman on the flight saying, “We confirm we have no record of a passenger by the name Esteban Santiago, or checked guns, on any of our flights to Fort Lauderdale.”
The alleged shooter and murderer of at least 5 people has been identified as Esteban Santiago Ruiz, 26, of New Jersey. Sources say he had a concealed weapons permit on him and a minor criminal history.

That’s crazy that he tells them something like that and they send him to a mental hospital and put him back on the street.
