      You mean drugs really ARE bad for you? Gasp! Say it ain’t so!

      With that said, I was under the impression that marijuana was really, really bad for you because your body could store it…in your brain cells. Alternatively, while alcohol can be bad, the body can metabolize it and get it out. But I’m informed by pro-druggies that I’m wrong, and I’ve had other fish to fry for the last eight years, so who knows.

      My philosophy about drug use has always been feel free, if that’s what you want, but don’t come to me, the taxpayer, and ask for any rehab clinics or needle exchange programs or low-cost physical or mental healthcare because I’m thoroughly sick and tired of bailing people out of their own stupid mistakes.

    Truly has been a Stellar year, topped off with a Cubs win and the Trump triumph. Now for the Huskies to take down ‘Bama! Yep, ever the optimist.

      Under the POtuS (gotta use that one while I still can) we’ve had instances where carriers’ refits were postponed for monetary reasons and there were huge holes in our coverage; however, the POtuS had huge holes in his foreign policy and economic priorities but luckily forbhim the screw ups all fell through the history hole and were forgotten by the public. All part of his Administration’s havin a hole policies.

          Yes, and nuke refueling was delayed until we had too many in port and their multiple presences caused a further delay. We had not only a huge target-of-opportunity with those carriers clustered but left whole areas open to exploitation by others.
          Thing is, whoever controls free commercial passage of the open oceans controls the world’s economy. Interdict free passage and you starve selectively. Britain controlled the high seas for many years until the US became the undisputed ruler of the seas. Russia wanted to be ‘a’ if not ‘the’ world sea power since Peter the Great. Even during the Cold War they never made it but now they’re rebuilding their blue water navy while Obama, following Carter plan, is ‘reshaping’ ours.
          China is interested in securing its littoral and strategic sea areas but is building porting facilities for future military use at about all of the world’s major choke points. China plans on being able to close, if not threaten, all of the world’s navies abilities to freely transition from ocean to ocean as well as control commercial shipping. I don’t see the POtuS disagreeing.

            Czar, agree. When China builds a blue water navy, and sustains its presence then we are in deep dung. Just review their subs, and now most of our Carriers (9 or10) are approaching quarter to half life. Another issue is the personnel to man those ships….many issues for SECDEF and President Trump.

              Yes, and that carrier’s really a floating city. Between the ship’s crew and the air wing you’re looking at over 5000 people serving on that ship. Some are nearing that point where the keel of its replacement’s got to be laid to have one in for one out. It takes years to build, test and outfit a new one, you just don’t pick one up,at Walmart…not an American made one at least.
              Can’t wait to see the carrier named after Carter…probably will be built without a rudder. The one named after Obama will probably only steer left and destroy American targets.

    Woof. Czarina and I hand-shoveled about three yards of grave yesterday, loading our dump cart and unloading it in parts of our drive that were prone to becoming tapioca in the coming rains. She got up early and went in to treat her patients, I’m crawling across the floor balancing aspirin and coffee. Guess who’s gonna win the tontine?

    Russia did not hack Vermont’s power authority. After the statements about Russian state-implicated hacking in the election, government departments across the US conducted security audits of their systems, looking for instances of malware that was implicated in the DNC hack.
    ONE notebook computer at the Vermont utility — not connected to the power grid — was found to have been infected by the same malware. The malware is available to anyone to purchase by people wanting hacking tools.

      As I posted here or next door a year or so ago…this ain’t new. Even before the hacking thing the grid was at danger from low-level idiot attacks and before that it was st a recognized danger in the 70s from being jury rigged, overloaded, outmoded and again, from any idiot with a bow, arrow and spool of wire.
      Fixing the grid is worse than herding cats, fatcats who own the systems have them duct taped together, there’s nothing in it for them to upgrade it but costs. Their bsckup,plan, recently used and still in use by New Orleans, is to let their aggregate sloth contribute to the collspse, tell the government it’s too expensive for them to fix and have the taxpayers cough up the repairs.
      The grid is laughably vulnerable at the local level, back to that clown with the bow and arrow. Most goljs don’t care about what happens to the ‘national’ grid until a crash in
      New York triggers a shift from some system three states away (or in Canada) they have a sharing agreement with. I did a vulnerability for a city before Katrina where I pointed out how a nut with stuff from a hardware store could go aroubd the city taking out major substations. That went tight into the ‘things too hard to do’ box but luckily along came Katrina a few years later, flooded out the system and you all payed for it. See how that works?
      Look at those high tension transmission lines going for miles between stations, routed through the middle of nowhere. Think about how hard it would be to take them out. Sure they’d be replaced but it would take time and how many could be taken out at different places…and how near impossible it would be to protect the all. Think T. E. Lawrence bleeding the Turks by cutting the Hejaz railway.

      Oh, don’t forget the hackers ‘tricked’ utility workers into revealing their passwords through phishing emails..AAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH…for how many decades have IT security folks HAMMERED into the workers’ heads not to reveal their passwords to someone sending phony emails? How do you remove ‘stupid’ from the loop?

        None of this addresses any of the actual state sponsored hacking that happens dally in businesses across the US, but that would require common sense. Hopefully after the 20th it can at least be looked at.
