Seen on FB (Wretchard T. Cat is Richard Fernandez):
Education (or human capital development) may be the decisive arena in international strategic competition. A system of problem solving based education could make a significant dent in unleashing the creativity not only in America but around the world.
Suppose we offered this Trivium as a replacement for or supplement to what is now high school. It consists of 3 subjects. Word skills, Tech skills and Life Skills and is structured like a computer game.
The Word Skills Module consists of 100 sessions in an accredited facility over 4 years. The student is admitted to a room with a terminal. He punches play. He must write a 500 word essay on whatever subject question — Sea peoples, zika, the origin of the pyramids — emerges. He will have access to a restricted library of resources, no comms, Skype, email or viber. At the conclusion of the session he gets graded by Watson. Depending on his score he gets points, just like a game.
The Tech skills module is the same thing, but in physics, chemistry, math and science. Here’s a problem. Here are open books. Solve it. Get points in a no comms, but resource rich computer environment.
The Life Skills module is different. You must join a human group, and demonstrate skills at doing something like building a house, scaling a cliff, constructing a fab. Joining an Army training program, or paramedic training course can satisfy the requirement. You must learn how to rise, be punctual, work, sweat and persevere.
As the student gains points in the Trivium he will become eligible to join certain higher level activities. For example, students with enough points will get access to certain virtual rooms which may lead to part time employment. Or projects. Or trips to the pyramids.
There are group games too, like multiplayer games. Write a group essay on the origin of [supply subject]. Solve this physics problem [insert question here]. Build an actual playground on this vacant lot. It will be Avatar to Avatar cooperation. You will only see the Avatar of your partners and their points.
University will go along the same lines, except there will be fewer computer games and more actual projects. University courses will be like: produce a YouTube video [to be judged by Watson] . Build a Tesla gun, etc. The chief difference is that university is more real oriented. Actual outputs are the goals.
At the last you get admitted to a Virtual World in your points panoply. You get to strut around in your game armor, with accessories you have won through points. You can have an aura or special virtual world powers. There you will attempt to get admitted into castles representing real jobs or real projects.
There will be monsters at the door to jobs. Some of them can only be overcome by completing a quest. Etc.
This should supplement traditional education. We should encourage kids to play games, earn points and reach the Boss Level. If they can do high school Trivium in one year, so much the better.
None of this is impossible to do. And there’s lots of scope for involving qualified people. If you do this Trivium, you could expand it to the 3rd World.

I agree. Pick out the best textbooks from pre-dept-of-ed schooling, and use them.
Get rid of all sidebar graphics and factoids and even pictures from textbooks.
(Have you read a history textbook for high school seniors lately? Distraction everywhere, on every page of the book.)
Get rid of all the ADHD-inducing stuff like that not only from textbooks, but also from classroom walls, also festooned with attention-grabbing “stuff that WE made YAY!”. Shut up, kid, read what other people made. Your classroom should be blank, landlord-white walls, and a book with words and just words in front of you.
Seriously. Go get a common history textbook for high school. Even a math one.
Math texts in the 1950s were better by far, and didn’t cater to the easily-distracted.
Words, and formulae.
Nowadays you get absurd, brightly-colored, well-designed sidebars on every page, like a Zondervan study bible. Women in Math! LGBTs in Math! Math to fight Global Warming!
Every single page.

Every single K-12 textbook is now a graphic-and-web designer’s clickbait fantasy, on paper.
Every single classroom wall is “look what WE made”, and not “look what all those people to whom we look up made”.
It’s like Lord of the Flies. Lets learn from US!
If I were put in charge of a classroom, third grade or twelfth, there would be nothing on the walls. And the texts would be text, and not ADHD-inducing intentional distraction.

Funny thing. I always said even when I was a young child that when I owned my own home all the walls would be white. My parents had wallpaper and it always was too busy for me. Everyone told me that I would change my mind. I never did. I love my white walls.
Once in some spell of madness I painted my bathroom pink. I hated it after about a month. Now everything is white again.
White walls are peaceful they are inspiring.

No. No. No. Shoehorning the computer into everything in education is the Star Trek fantasy that has gotten us to the point people are accepting of mobile phones in restaurant dinning rooms, taking pictures of their food and not talking to people across the table from them. Form over function.
It’s a glorified calculator. Except for classes pertaining to it’s usage and practical application, personal computers should be removed from the classroom.

Agreed, but the world has changed, and is changing faster day by day. I am a dinosaur, basically. Only way to rid that of which you speak, is to destroy the grids, webs, power plants, etc. Technology is a good thing, but needs to be channeled.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I’m sorry if I seem surly, but I don’t agree with what you wrote. The world has not changed at all. Western civilization is being led around by the nose and told it is. Nothing needs to be destroyed or physically changed. People’s perception is the only thing that needs to change. Get the companies that create and sell products to the education system, out of the education system and ban their lobbyists. Go back to teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. Give people back the ability to identify what is unimportant and the free market will sort out the rest.

Think we both agree that the technology available could be put to better use. Which goes hand in hand with your post. At least to me it does.
And while “there is nothing new under the sun”, also true, the speed and access has definitely ramped up.
Different views sure, yet similar. And I don’t have the answer, but good to roll around in my nearly “bug” like brain.

I was thinking the same thing. Technology is here for better or worse and there is no undoing it, we do have control over how we use it and how the people we choose to associate with use it. No phones at the table is a simple rule.
I like the idea of the tiered human experience part of the suggestion.
We at every turn are dehumanizing society people are becoming attached to two things 1) technology and 2) the identity that their technology tells them that they should be.
People need to wake up and reconnect to their own humanity and exercise their free will.

Thank you lovely, this is a perfect example;
” We at every turn are dehumanizing society people are becoming attached to two things 1) technology and 2) the identity that their technology tells them that they should be. “
This was said or written by someone else within the last decade or two. It has become de facto truth. This is the same logic as gun violence. It’s marketing and perception. Self-serving individuals have perpetuated this myth for their own enrichment.
People that have been educated in the last 20-30 years, believe this is the truth now. Steve Jobs marketed to the education system because the kids would grow up and be in the position to buy what they were comfortable with and knew how to use.
Not because apple ever had a better product. It just had better marketing.

Derk’s statement is equivalent to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I disagreed and went further to state the bathwater (and baby) is unrelated to the issue of teaching fundamentals or advanced theory.
“introduction to computers” college courses contain more information about how to shop at the store than how the computer functions. Accounting courses are data entry classes.
Simple addition is no longer possible without an iPhone calculator app.

Don’t you remember how wonderful Cable in the Classroom™ worked in the 70’s and 80’s?
(/sarc)
Yep.
If the garden could be closed somewhat for the schools, I’d love the idea of computers (even smartphones) in the class.
But there’s too much distraction on the innertubes. This goes back to what I said above.
Look, the internet has more works than any kid in America has access to in his school or public library. I bet Little Joe Kansan doesn’t have Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery available to him at either library in physical form.
The sad thing about the internet, and the great thing, is that if you’re thirsty, it’s like taking a drink out of a fire hydrant.
I always had access to the physical-book library at my school. And my town. And my mom’s college.
I couldn’t use my TI in math class, though.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I couldn’t afford a TI for the last college class I took. It was chemistry. I made an A, the highest average in the class. Every morning on the way to school my then high school freshman son would call out formulas and equations that I needed to memorize. The next year he made an A in his class.
I was the only student who didn’t have that calculator, and I think I was probably the one who truly understood the course work best.
Ditto to each and every math class I ever had. When I got to classes that required a programmable calculator I set it aside and learned the danged formulas. And I understood the math. Truly understood it, not just knew how to solve for the answer.

Strange you should mention Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks of 1917 Revolution fame were heavily Jewish, the big names Trotsky, Kamenev and Zinoviev come immediately to mind. Then again politicians have notoriously short memories and the first under the bus are usually those who supported and helped them get to the top.

Yeah, a vet explained it as ‘the jewels come off, the brain comes back’…then again she was a bitter woman…

Who is a bitter woman, Hilary or the vet? Or both?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I think Hillary went past ‘bitter’ some time in the early 70s. Not this vet, one I knew who wore stiletto Birkenstocks.

Because they haven’t finished manufacturing it yet. Remember that Gulf of Tonkin evidence, the ‘evidence’ there was a US/Russia nuke/bomber/missile gap, that evidence Colin Powell was given to present to the UN in justification of the Iraq invasion…need I go on?

Gotta look back at Carter when he apppointed Turner to gut the agency. Turner was there long enough to make a thorough mess out of it and had no viable plan to heal the injuries he’d caused. When RR got in office he had to hit the ground running with a damaged intel structure being led by a damaged agency. Bit tough to heal while you run the marathon.

Journalism was better before they had to rename Investigative Reporting to allow for the insertion of fiction.
Besides, all the cynical a**holes with drinking problems & functional bulls**t detectors are still here. We’re all still here, David! Hi!

The News was better when it was reporter-driven, when the Paper asked the gumshoe “What have you heard today? What’s the buzz? What’s new?”, and before The News became top-down, where the Paper said to the former gumshoe writer, “Here’s what you all are going to write today, or you’re fired. Here’s what message you’re all going to send today, or you’re fired.” Way before it got to the point where even the sports reporters and the weather forecasters were also subject to that directive.

“15 people armed with a hammer that was stolen from a Home Depot today murdered a 90-year-old WW2 vet outside that Home Depot. The suspects are described as adults and teens between the heights of 5 and 6 feet, and were wearing clothing.”
Journalism died when it began to dictate to its employees what they could NOT say.

Did the hammer have an extended magazine and bayonet lug?

Nope, just a plain old hammer.
But if only we had gun control, people wouldn’t murder other people with hammers!

It’s the hammer’s fault.
Need to ban hammers.

We can have a research program which will develop a ‘safety hammer’ that will only work when activated by a chip implanted into the registered purchaser’s forearm.

I hadn’t seen that clip either. I listened to his interview with Hannity on iHeartRadio a few minutes ago. It was really good and a huge relief to hear his voice. I hope Trump can help him somehow.

Muslim hate crime hoaxer’s sister blames the NYPD

Predictable the rat Muslim who lied about being attacked by Trump supporters is being portrayed as a victim by her sister. Wait for the Go fund me to be set up. The only question is whether it will be set up by CAIR or by some guilt ridden white SJW.
I wonder if Obama has enough time to invite her to the White House.

Watching taped Survivor season finale from last night, and for whatever reason, I LOVE this show! Only show I watch, (since Castle cancelled anyways and Criminal Minds kept changing cast).
First season it came out and was the all the rage, I said “meh’. Watched the finale that season and was hooked, haven’t missed an episode since.

We have watched 2 seasons of Alone. At first it was done on a remote part of Vancouver Island. This year they are in Patagonia. Last person standing wins.
