The Other America
In such a depressing American landscape, why is the United States doing pretty well?
Put simply, millions of quiet, determined Americans get up every morning and tune out the incompetence and corruption of their government. They simply ignore destructive fads of popular culture. They have no time for the demagoguery of their politicians and the divisive rhetoric of social activists. Instead, these quiet Americans simply go to work, pursue their own talents, excel at what they do, and seek to take care of their families.
The result of their singular expertise is that even in America’s current illness, the nation still soars above the global competition. …
America is not saved by our elected officials, bureaucrats, celebrities and partisan activists. Instead, just a few million hardworking Americans in key areas — a natural meritocracy of all races, classes and backgrounds — ignore the daily hype and chaos, remain innovative and productive, and dazzle the world.
The silent few of a forgotten America have given the entire country an astonishing standard of living that is quite inexplicable.

My new favorite way to eat cabbage (and easiest to prepare): Cut across the head, through the core, in 1″ slices, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, then bake. When soft and browned, drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Red cabbage is best, but green is good too.

Secret Agenda: Are They Planning To Use ‘Russian Interference’ As An Excuse To Invalidate Trump’s Election Victory?
It has been said that nothing happens by accident in politics, and it is certainly no accident that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, members of the U.S. Senate and the mainstream media are all suddenly buzzing about “Russian hacking” and “Russian interference” in our elections. Over the past 48 hours, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and just about every other major news source in America has been breathlessly telling us that the CIA has concluded that the Russians “intervened” in the presidential election with the specific goal of helping Donald Trump win. The implication is that if the Russian interference was significant enough, it could have “unfairly” altered the outcome of the election and thus Donald Trump’s victory was not legitimate. And if his victory was not legitimate, that opens up all sorts of possibilities for the Democrats.
For those that have been wondering if the establishment was going to attempt to steal the presidency away from Donald Trump before he can be inaugurated, we now appear to have our answer.

India, don’t forget India. China’s more worried about India than most realize. India’s still a client state to Russia and has access to a lot of top-drawer Russian military technology and China has fought recent history wars with India and Virtnam.
By mid-century India’s populstion may exceed that in numbers and in youth. India’s population is getting younger, on the average, as China’s gets older. You need a young population to build business and wage war. Then again, if Trump builds that wall I know where they can gets lotsa young workers…

I took Dh to physical therapy. He can use his hand, except for the cut up finger, he can drive, so that’s good. I forced myself to go and do some filing, office stuff. Now it’s time for tennis. This is something new, so I am a bit concerned. Will the other “kids” like me?

True.

Another convert…
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban said Wednesday it’s probably best to wait until Donald Trump takes the Oval Office before judging him, calling the president-elect America’s “number one draft pick.”
“He’s who we put our hopes and dream with. Now it is easier because we haven’t played a game yet,” Cuban said on CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report.” “No reason to rush to judgment or come to any conclusions now. Let’s see what happens starting January 21st and we’ll go from there. I hope he’s a superstar.”

The cabbage talk upthread ^^ made me think of this appetizer. My friends daughter made it for Thanksgiving and it is supposed to be delicious. I’m going to try a version of it for Christmas.
Stella I know you don’t eat soft cheeses but if it sounds good to you maybe you could use some Romano or Parmesan instead of the feta?

I miss goat cheese! I don’t really like endive, though. Too bitter for me. I loved goat cheese with strawberries, or pineapple, on a good cracker.

Bleu. Just a touch.
Or Boursin.

If you spread Boursin between two layers of your favorite cheeses, and grill that on rye, with tomato and bacon, you have the ultimate grilled cheese. Add a bit of shallot mayo, cracked pepper, and it’s like “Dayum!”

Take your bacon. Good, thick-sliced bacon.
Cut into thirds. Lay small dried apricots onto the middle of each.
Add a jalapeno slice. Fold, toothpick, and cook at 350 until peak crispiness.
Works with dates, walnuts and cream cheese and habaneros slices too.

4 Ss.
Sweet, Salty, Spicy, Savory.
Umami is the alternate name for Savory.
That app, which must always include bacon, is genius.
It has all four.

I suppose one could substitute strips of tortilla for the bacon, and throw in dates, walnuts, chorizo.
Nah. Still have to have the bacon. That’s just crazy talk.

All I know is, that app is the most fun your mouth is allowed to have in most jurisdictions.

Anything your mind can fathom, you can put inside a third of a strip of bacon.
Limit yourself to three, four ingredients, make a little ball, wrap it with bacon.
Broccoli, chorizo, shredded pepper jack, maple bacon onion jam.
Toothpick and cook!
