      Getting ready to call it a night so I let the border collie out for her last trip around the house. Just as I’m about to close the door she starts barking so I pick up the flashlight and walk aroubdvthe corner. There, on top of the propane tank, is the outside cat with eyes as big as the cat above. Usually he’s in the garage when we lock up – tonite he missed lights out (we thought he was already up in the attic) and was very unhappy about finding himself out in the cold, cruel world without his food bowl. I’m betting the localized smell of fresh skunk, more of a warning shot than firing for effect, didn’t help much either.

          And skunks, aside from their obvious ‘quality’ are the cutest animals. As I’ve said, ours don’t even really react to us, they continuevon their ways as if we were part of the outdoor furniture.

            When I first got back to this area about 15 or so years ago, was driving out in the country outside town, and said “Wow, I smell a skunk!”

            I was told by the driver, “That’s not A skunk you’re smelling. It is Skunk, though.”

            It was fall, and I was told that it was Harvest Time for the many folks growing by the river.

            Ohhh…

              Yeah, years ago we had an area by a lake that had lots of skunk cabbage weed. When owners would mow the area the smell would buold and linger for days. Here we have a paper mill to the west of us and every now and then we get a west wind while the plant’s processing and we get a nice dosebof industrial skunk.
